This headset will kill the Quest 3

Meta plans to launch the Quest 3s which sounds like a better model of the Quest 3 but it's not. However what effect will the launch of the headset have on the Quest 3 and Quest 2

Not sure I agree 100% I had an oculus Go and ran out of storage space every 5 minutes. I was beginning to run out of disk space on quest 2 before the quest 3 came out, so if you want to maintain your back catalogue you might consider paying for extra storage. storage and lens quality might be arguments to choose the 3 over the 3s

Hard no. Quest 3 if you can afford it. It's worth it. The lenses in the 2 are shite. Night and day difference. Q3 lite is a more affordable version, and for those on the fence and we're able to A/B compare the two, they would pick Q3 every time.

Not every buyer is motivated solely by whatever is the cheapest option. People who think this way are commonly mystified by the purchasing decisions of people who don't. But you wouldn't have to be an "enthusiast" to choose a Quest 3 over a Quest 3s. A lot of people will, even as their first VR headset. Even more will buy the 3s. What Meta is doing here is diversifying into targeting different kinds of customers. For the same reason that nVidia has so many different GPU models. The cheaper models sell more, but the expensive models also sell. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm not saying no one will buy one but the majority will for example especially when it comes to parents from Christmas presents in these current time will opt for the cheaper option. It's why the quest 2 is still out selling the quest 3.

Im reading a lot of people are required to verify their age with meta which means they are collecting personal information which means any headset that does not do that will kill the quest 3 for me.

No way it kills the Q3. VR is still an enthusiast space and I think many people in it, myself included, will spend the extra to have higher end hardware. The Q3S will be an excellent entry point for people who aren't willing to jump into a $500 or $650 (or more) headset but still want to get into the VR space with something competent that can play the newest games.

i couldnt go back to fresne lenses after using the pancake lenses and the better panels. there the most 2 important things for vr maybe the og rift will re release and kill the q3s 😂

No it won’t kill the quest 3. It doesn’t have fresnel lenses and it’s more of a quest 2 lite more than a quest 3 lite.

I think that the Lite may suppress sales of the Q3 (proper), but that won't hold the Q3 back, as technically they'll both be able to do the same job. If it increases VR adoption, it's all good. I don't even mind if they continue the pattern, with the next generation, give the regular headset all the updates at that £500 price point, then bring out a cheaper lite version a year later, sans the more expensive updates e.g. A Quest 4 with updated CPU, display and eye tracking, followed a year later by a lite version with the same CPU, but no eye-tracking and the Q3 display and pancake lenses. The fact is that mass adoption isn't going to happen with this generation and likely not the next, so until we get there, it will be down to a hopefully growing number of "enthusiasts" to encourage development. I hope that with more competition coming with Horizon OS based headsets from other manufacturers and the Samsung/Google XR OS, we'll see something of a quantum jump in VR headsets by the end of the decade, likely through the developments for AR/MR smart glasses, where technology must become lighter and more comfortable.

@@RileyELFuk Word of mouth is incredibly important and people only have bad things to say about the experience with fresnel lenses. Or do you think that the nausea inducing reputation is a good thing for VR?

@@matKilla9801 Fresnel lenses are no better or worse on the whole, when it comes to causing nausea. Some of the best headsets use fresnel lenses. There are several factors that can lead to nausea, but none are down to the type of lens per se, lower refresh rates, wider FOV and lower resolution can all exacerbate nausea, but it's the incongruity between the sensory input to the eyes and it not agreeing with the vestibular system (the inner ear/balance) that is the biggest problem, at least until people ger their 'VR legs'. There are plenty of people who got nauseous using the Q3 as their first device. The advice remains the same, take it slowly and come out as soon as you feel nauseous. Pancake lenses just increase the sweet spot and reduce the weight, they won't prevent nausea.

There are indications that Meta is selling off remaining Quest 2 stock. As SKU's go out of stock, they are staying out of stock. Despite the attractively low prices, it's not a good time to buy a new Quest 2 right now. Buy used or wait for the 3s.

The quest 3s is a bad idea since the shitty lenses will make people sick and give them a bad impression of VR. Fresnel lenses are just not acceptable for a next gen headset. People complaining about price are just short sighted whiners. The Quest 3 is cheaper than a PS5, and less than half the price of the Index. It's actually super cheap for what you are getting.
