tbh I am amazed how many people say the french tree sucks. Like yeah, top tier is anemic, but their mid WW2 to end of cold war lineup is so juicy good. feels like french solid shot are little nukes if you hit anything remotely flat.

At least France knew the importance of armor early on. Something many (not all) other nations rank 1 tanks lack when compared to some of the early French tanks. French guns let them down, but no more so than nations like Japan or Italy. It can be hard to find a gun that pens more than 50mm in these 3 nations at rank 1. The worst part about playing rank 1 tanks as a new player are the Level 100 players doing the same. Now with French mid rank tanks, they have reversed things with hard hitting, fast loading guns, but now not enough armor on some of their tanks.

I think you are misremembering what you saw, I looked up some pictures of the Surbaisse at Saumur and it clearly has an M2 Browning .50 cal. Feel free to check for yourself. Looking at photos from the time period there are some tanks with a .50 cal and some that don't even have a mounting point for it. So it inst ahistorical. Gaijin just chose a version without the commander MG. It would absolutely be very nice to have in game.

If you time your deceleration just right, from 24kmh and less your suspension is actually somewhat stable and you can clutch some shots
