Was looking for this comment. Does airflow create lift during an emergency descent? I can see it as a drone or with a ballistic parachutes. But there’s a minimum altitude on a ballistic parachute, they’re not an ejection system.
@CarbonPhysicsАй бұрын
@@russbell6418 It will be interesting to see where this new technology goes, whether they use a ballistic parachute or whether it can make it to the ground if it loses power. I'm glad people are still coming up with new ideas.

You can recover a drone with as little as two motors even if they're on the same side.
@CarbonPhysicsАй бұрын
@@jtjames79 Yeah, I've flown drones out of trees after wrecking half of the props, but there's a big difference between recovery and flying one full of terrified passengers while navigating to a clearing on the ground. Sideways gusts of wind will still be a problem; the only way it can counter sideways movement would be by rolling the whole aircraft. Maybe they could get sideways thrust by sacrificing some longitudinal thrust and aligning the rollers in a more X-like shape. Or if they can get the airfoils to get into more "sucking" mode and channel the thrust sideways thru the roller instead; I'm not sure how much thrust that would add, it would need a hole on the outside of the rollers, and adding an additional degree of freedom to the airfoil angle of attack control mechanism might be a bit complicated; and of course any thrust that is redirected is thrust that is not fighting against gravity, so they would probably need to be able to increase the rotor speed and only partially redirect the thrust thru the central channel. edit: Ah, rewatching I see some variants of the design got a third pair of rollers that doesn't do anything for lift and is just for horizontal thrust, and others that don't contribute to thrust, just hover and sideways thrust. Seems a little wasteful unless the downsides of repurposing the hover/thrust rollers somehow are worse than having that extra weight not contributing much to the main needs.

@guitaekm2Ай бұрын
I think it should be. The germanscienceguy said, that you can increase or decrease the thrust by just increasing the distance between those two circles
@timkohlerАй бұрын
I think this is one of the big problems, conventional helicopters can auto-rotate if they lose power, I don't think this can (but please correct me if I'm wrong). So for safety you would have to be able to fly with at least one roller out, and ideally 2. Increasing the thrust from one roller for a short time should be possible. What happens if you lose both rollers on one side? Will need lots of double drive systems (just like twin rotor helicopters), and these are heavy.
@tiagotiagotАй бұрын
Would make a lot more sense to design it with an airfoil lifting-body and some stubby wings to help with improving efficiency in forward flight, which will be where it will spend most of the time.
