Ever wondered what this hidden room is in Batman: Arkham Knight? Well, here's two theory's that could explain the mystery behind this secret room in Arkham Knight...
Batman Arkham Knight is an extremely detailed game, and the devs made sure that each location across Gotham City had some sort of purpose. Except for this one area behind Panessa Studios... This secret room has no Riddler Trophies, no easter eggs, no NOTHING, so why was it even implemented into the game in the first place? Well, I got to work, trying to figure out what this room was meant for, and in the process I developed two theories and might've solved the mystery behind this secret room...

My personal favorite theory is that this was where Anarky was planning to set up base, but was eaten by Killer Croc. For those who don't know, there are Anarky tags all throughout Gotham in Arkham Knight, with one of them being really close to the Panessa Studios outcove, with a giant mess of some red substance on the wall and ground, giant claw marks, and a torn down bit of the guard rail, all of this being in sight of Killer Croc's lair, the light house. Looking back, the red stuff could've also been clay if you use the Clayface theory, but my idea stands.

It’s got to be Clayface. A movie studio, clay on the chairs, the concept art…Plus that was a massive door that clearly had massive damage done it in order to break it open. It would’ve taken someone big with a lot of strength behind them to do so. Clayface definitely fits that profile. I love how we are still figuring out Easter eggs and lore to this day, it’s insane the amount of detail that goes into these games.

I think Clayface is confirmed to be catatonic in Knight. There are some traces of him on one of the airships and hush also used bits of him to cover up the scars in his face.

Could you just imagine how awful it would be if you entire body was turned into a completely solid clay that's stretchable movable and the like. I figured the Lazarus Pit would restore the entirety of his body having complete skin , bones , brain etc. But it was all scattered during the drop in the Lazarus pit. I dunno tho. I'd really like it to be Zsasz because I was surprised he wasn't really in this game after having roles in the first 2 games. Clayface should've also been included in this game, but I guess they ran out of time or ideas on how to bring him back and create a solid side mission for him. Damn....we really need a new Arkham game. I really miss this series and wouldn't mind Batman traveling to other cities (Star City or Metropolis??) to help other heroes fight villains.

If I'm honest, it would've been the best option if they'd made Gotham Knights an Arkham game (A.K.A. good and continuing the story, like everyone hoped for). Could've been amazing to see the Arkham versions of these characters continue to deal with the fallout from Bruce being "dead". Hell, just give Barbara the spinal implant and you can have fun with interplay between her and the rest as Tim has building concern over his wife's safety

You can find Zsasz when you're on the CCTV cameras looking for Oracle. Originally, he was supposed to be a side mission in Arkham Knight and that's how it started. Zsasz has unused voice lines in the game as well. And there's a Riddle that gives you a short story about what Zsasz is doing.

And I think it’s reasonable to assume that Batman thought that he could leave Zaszz alone for the time being because Scarcrow was the much more immediate threat that had to be taken care of. There also probably wasn’t many innocent people for Zaszz to hurt/kill in Gotham at that time.

I always thought that Zsasz showing up in that camera feed just to vanish never to be seen of again felt strange but always chocked it up to being a simple easter egg, however it being the remnant of a cut bigger role for him in the game makes MUCH more sense.

I think that room is very obviously a clayface Easter egg. Zsasz has no particular reason to have his hideout be in a back room of Panessa Studios, his character doesn't really relate to movies and theater at all. Clayface on the other hand is very open about his history as an actor, and you can see posters for a movie he starred in all over Panessa Studios. If this isn't enough to convince people Clayface most likely resides in that room, there is literally clay covering the chairs (where clayface would be sitting down). I know in the video he says that the texture could be something else but there are no textures that appear to be the same as that one anywhere else, and the color looks identical to Clayface's texture in arkham city. I'd even go as far as to say that maybe rocksteady planned for a clayface side mission, but scrapped it early on and left this room as an Easter egg to him

I think it was both. I think it was originally Zsasz's room for his mission that was rushed into a Clayface easter egg (with the broken doors and odd textures) once they were both scrapped from the game. I like to believe both Zsasz and Karlo were supposed to be in the game at some point.

I think Clayface would be more interesting. Zsasz already appeared in Asylum and City, so using Clayface would make more sense since he have less appearances. He's also one of my favorite Batman villains.

Clayface (canonically) had chunks of him dispersed around in Arkham Knight. It's what Hush uses as his new mask. Clayface was separated into said chunks after the Lazarus Pit explosion, and as of Arkham Knight, he was unable to piece himself back together; so, while all of Clayface doesn't appear in Arkham Knight, a small portion of him does. He most likely won't ever piece himself back together, but it might also set up a 2nd Clayface in the arkhamverse. There could also be a chance that the Clayface theory is right, and is probably a cut side-mission where Batman helps Clayface piece himself back together (or it could be a cut side-mission involving a 2nd Clayface). Arkham Knight really only ever had a clear vision story-wise, but not so much side-content wise; so it's kinda difficult to tell exactly what Rocksteady was thinking (also, reminder that Asylum and City were both written by Paul Dini, so Arkham Knight was kind of an inconsistent project that Rocksteady threw together, imo. I like the Arkham Games, but it's glaringly obvious that the quality of the gameplay isn't the same (Batmobile has way more segments than Predator and Combat encounters. And, the Excavator boss is the most pointless boss fight in gaming history (Rocksteady actually thought it was a good idea to destroy the Batmobile just to give a reskinned version of the Batmobile))

Why must the two be separate? Clayface in this universe is into the team-up thing. Remember Victor's side-mission in City? What if this time, he and Clayface teamed up, allowing him to be in two places at once while they worked together to bait the Batman into a trap? Victor intentionally letting Batman track "him" again, actually leading him to Clayface, where Batman is expecting a certain set of rules and tactics and thus making for a trap? Victor being on the cameras actually fits this idea. Imagine Batman trying to track him and failing because the cameras don't make sense, he's places he can't be, and Batman starts getting gaslit into thinking it's in his head.

Clayface merged with the lazarus pit and was recovered by the GCPD and he was unable to take form again and most of the liquid was kept at the GCPD and hush got a hold of some of it using it to cover his scars

Do you wanna get nuts? What if clayface transformed into zsasz during Arkham knight, that would practically align with everything said in this video. He did it with joker and ironically victor zsasz is wearing the same exact things from Arkham city so maybe he transformed into zsasz in order to safely escape Arkham city undetected. He then grabbed the boat and fled to panessa studios because clayface was an actor as said. Maybe the boss fight would’ve been clayface and then he would transform back into zsasz in order for him to fit into the Batmobile (hence Bruce probably forces him to). The then leaked dialogue would commence hence why it would be victor zsasz voice instead. This seems pretty brilliant to me (Additional - maybe clayface chose to become victor zsasz because he’s always seemed to be a weak character in the Arkham verse. In order to try and misdirect Bruce into letting his guard down further than needed. Giving him a perfect advantage as clayface is believed to be dead by Bruce.)

I love it, but the only problem is that some of Zsasz's cut dialogue was meant for the batmobile ride to GCPD, and if Batman knew that it was actually Clayface, not Zsasz, then I doubt Batman would've put him inside the batmobile for obvious reasons

I have an even better theory what if Clayface was hiding out in the backroom in panessa studios after arkham city. But when the scarecrow thing happend Clayface left or after the time Gordon arrived at the studios to meet batman in the flashback Clayface tought his hideout was compromised and left. And then when the scarecrow thing happend Zsasz walked around finding the busted door at the back of panessa studios walked in and made it his own base.

Clayface definitely makes more sense given his acting background, but the Zsasz details are interesting. Although it doesn't make total sense, I kind of like the idea of Clayface impersonating Zsasz in that video footage, acting out his masterpiece role being captured by Batman, and then maybe trying to break out the criminals captured at GCPD. Although I'm sure Batman would at last second put him in a Clayface containment cell and say something like "that's not Zsasz" and then Clayface breaks character because he was caught.

There were reasons for why Zsasz's side missions was cut off. 1. time issues bc they didn't have much time left there wasn't enough time to finish the side mission. 2. It was too similiar to Pyg's mission. (bc pyg's missions were examening crime scenes to find where pyg is hiding and Zsasz's mission would've been the exact same.) So their choice was to either cut off a side mission about a creepy serial killer dressed with a pig mask who would be a new villain or an already used villain with a side mission they could no longer finish in time.

I like the clay-face theory with one alteration. The boat. You can very clearly see that substance (the exact tone and texture of clay-face) isn’t just in the chairs and stuff, it has smear marks into the drain. Are you kidding me? I had no idea there was an open area at the Panessa Studios at the docks, Ive played Arkham Knight a few times already and actually playing it again but first time streaming it. It is also worth noting that if you have a head for geometry, the underground path during the Shadow War DLC mission does lead pretty close to Panessa Studios. So it is possible that Clayface sank into the pit under the Monarch, came out in the pit under Panessa, and climbed up from there. Possibly even being how Nyssa knew where the new source was located.

i think it is clay face that the only reason the freeze clauster could serve, all the gear had its role, the batarang for far buttons, the grapple gun traversal to locations, the explosive gel for check points and penguin, electric gun for electrified water in ras alghul mission , disruptor for penguin, remote batarang for buttons in arkham knight hideout, hacking gear, password, for stagg ship, voice analyzer for harley quinn at panasea studios, so what purpose in story would the freeze clauster do except fighting clayface, moreover after fighting multiple copies of him you were gonna insert it inside the batmobile to shoot freezing shots to fight against a giant clayface in panasea studios square

There is one thing that bothers me about this room: When looking at the door on the interior which would lead into the studios, why is it locked from the OUTSIDE? It looks like someone barricaded it from the outside like they were trying to keep something in. It also is covered in the same substance as the surrounding furniture is, with three metal pipes blocking the door, chained up with a padlock. It sort of looks like it would make sense from a meta perspective that this would be part of the scrapped Zsasz mission, but also, given the look of it now, it almost looks like someone captured Clayface or something and locked him in Panessa Studios? Like you mentioned, the boat is straight from Arkham City, and everything is covered in what appears to be clay...but one thing is off. It looks like everywhere you can find the "clay" at would be oddly human, but also mostly clay. Like if Clayface was unstable and was somewhere between a human form and liquid-like clay, otherwise it wouldn't make sense why there's such a mess everywhere. For that matter, given the Lazarus Pit makes people more unstable mentally when coming out of it, what if Clay's mental instability manifested as physical instability as well? The fact that this is in a part of Panessa studios, which is literally in the backyard of Batman's home base for this game, it would seem to imply two things- 1. Batman would have to know about this room. 2. Whoever is currently using this room would appear to be trying to contain something/someone in a very improvised way. I believe that while the truth is likely a combination of factors, what we're seeing in it's final form, is actually Batman tying up loose ends while he believes himself to be dying soon. Namely it appears that Batman discovered an unstable Clayface after the events of Arkham City, loaded him into a boat, and locked him in this back room in the Panessa Studio base, potentially for his own safety and for the safety of others, as Clay was likely in a highly unstable state post-Lazarus Pit, and it could even be possible that containing and housing Clay Face is one of the primary purposes of the Panessa base, which would make sense given that this is a location with a lot of significance to Clay Face personally, given that some of the posters in Panessa studios are actually movies Clay Face acted in before his transformation. Given that Arkham Knight is a game all about endings and characters finding the closest they'll ever get to peace, I believe that while the original intent may have been to be part of a Zsasz mission, the devs seem to have repurposed the room last second into the final resting place of Clayface, which would fit the themes of the game perfectly. Just as Freeze and his wife go off to live what little time they have left in peace, Clayface is left in a room surrounded by memories of who he used to be, even if he's no longer in his right mind to remember said memories. Given the concept art we see, this room could've gone through multiple phases and purposes without one ever being settled on. If the concept art we see here is actually older than the scrapped Zsasz content, both could be true, but the final state of the room would be explained by it being an area the devs simply didn't have time to finish, perhaps a scrapped storyline involving Clayface breaking out of Panessa Studios, that was just too late in development to finish either in the main game or the DLC?

If Clayface was trying to lay low in Gotham during this night of chaos then he'd have to disguise himself as someone who the other criminals would know not to mess with, but who has no henchmen to notice he's in the wrong place. Zsasz fits that bill perfectly, and the security footage of him just kinda standing around doesn't seem in-character - surely he'd just be trying to rack up his kill count? So I think maybe the plan was Clayface could have disguised himself as Zsasz to scout Gotham, but eventually the real Zsasz caught sight of him and tracked him back to his hideout to kill him for stealing his image. Of course, Zsasz would be totally out of his depth in this fight so Batman would have to save him, then take him to GCPD after defeating Clayface. Another theory could be that it was simply gonna be a Zsasz mission, but they'd leave Easter eggs hinting that this Zsasz might actually be Clayface in disguise.

Imo, it would’ve been Scarecrow Clayface and Zsasz, or either one or two of them, having a plan and a side mission with all three and it was eventually cut because of lots of content already in the game

This is crazy and while you’re probably right about this being for the zsaz mission, I think once it was cut the devs intentionally made it look like clayface was there. The boat from arkham city is the dead giveaway for me and it’s these little details across the whole franchise that make me love these games so much
