Jamel… I’m a licensed scuba diver & have heard many stories of this particular site & have to say that there is NO WAY I would ever dive there. The maximum safe depth you can dive on normal air tanks is around 130 feet & any deeper than that, you need to use specialist equipment & undertake special training. When he was talking about diving 300 - 400 feet or deeper, the pressure on the body would be too immense to comprehend 😵😵😵. When I’m underwater, I will only dive in locations where I can SEE all around me & all available escape routes (if needed). Getting stuck in a “silting out” scenario would scare 7 shades of s**t out of me because if you lose orientation while underwater, you’re in deep trouble if no one else is nearby. I’ve been invited to go cave diving but give the same response every time… “OH HELL NO!!!”😬👎

@@foxsicle … EXACTLY ☝️😁. I just don’t like the idea of the “walls closing in around me” while underwater or losing orientation. The more space & area around me, the better 👍😁. I’ve dived on shipwrecks before but will NEVER go into underwater caves regardless of how experienced the other divers are or their flimsy safety “guarantees”.

I would only go down into an actual deep sea station. If one was made. I would not dive that far or go outside. I am talking the ocean, cave diving is well awesome but dangerous from what I have gathered from stories if you do not know what you are doing and even then. Edit: That said there are some really, or a lot would be a better wording awesome divers out there. I could not do it.

@@minuette1752 … I wouldn’t do it even if they “coughed up” a million dollars in cash up front to me 🚫💵🚫. I’ve heard so many stories of cave diving expeditions gone wrong (tragically) due to stupidity & ignorance from divers who ignore the warning signs. Just the mere thought of not being able to see even a foot or so in front of me because of kicked-up silt in enclosed areas is terrifying, especially if you have barely enough space to turn around & try to escape while valuable air goes to waste. I only dive for recreational purposes with my friends. I don’t do it to get killed as a result of stupidity & ignorance.

@@minuette1752 … The truly scary thing about cave diving would be or is when you hear of divers with upwards of 20 - 30 year’s experience or more literally think they’re “10 feet tall & bulletproof” who stupidly go into these caves thinking that nothing will happen to them. It only takes a split second for something to go wrong & all hell can break loose.

Jamel, my husband is a certified SCUBA diver with a special certification for cave diving. There are apparently some beautiful caves that people love to dive in. I can't get certified for SCUBA, because I have type 1 diabetes. Believe it, it didn't hurt my feelings when I found that out. But two of our three (now grown) kids are also certified divers. I'm glad they are, since it gives my husband some go-to dive partners.

I didn't know about cave diving either until about 2 weeks ago, when the movie 13 Lives was released. It's about the true story rescue of the Thai soccer team (about 4 years ago) who got trapped in a cave by flooding. The heroes of the story were cave divers. It's very scary and very dangerous, and a good movie with Vigo Mortensen and Colin Farrell.

Mr. Ballen has tons of videos about cave diving and they're all terrifying. I did diving before and it was only a few dozen feet down and it was already enough for me. But you have these people diving in pitch black and extremely small spaces. I didn't hear him say it in this video but when doing cave diving sometimes it gets so small that you have to take your air tanks off and push them through the hole in front of you and then follow them because the hole is too small to get through with the air tanks on. One thing I'm not sure about is that in this video, 400 ft guarantees nitrogen narcossis, but there are jobs that require diving deeper than that, so I don't know how they avoid it.
@gerardroll6468
@gerardroll6468 2 жыл бұрын
I take it you’re referring to saturation diving, which involves working at extreme depths for some time, more often than not in pitch black darkness. Divers spend time living in diving bells with the pressure inside relatively equal to that outside the bell. They can also double as decompression chambers. The money these divers can earn is astonishing, but the risks involved are mind-blowing & in all honesty, NOT worth the risk. Mr Ballen has done a few videos on it with tragic outcomes for those involved.

@@newgrl .. I’ve seen a few of his videos on saturation diving & can honestly say that for as much as I love diving for recreational purposes, there’s no way in hell I’d take up saturation diving as a career. After his stories of incidents that cost people their lives doing it, I’m pretty convinced I’m never diving past the maximum safe depth you can descend to using regular air tanks, which is around 130 feet.

This is my 2nd time watching this, the first time w Mr Ballen. Such a tragic story. There’s another one Mr Ballen tells about a dry cave, it’s called Sperlunking. Where people explore caves by squeezing in to narrow spaces. It’s crazy too, even though you’re not under water, it’s very dangerous too. The story is 2 brothers and others are in a cave, when the one brother really squeezes himself in to a very narrow tunnel, by letting all the air out of his lungs, he s tall and ends up stuck upside down. Lots of people tried to free him, but to no avail. A human cannot be upside down for more than a certain time, about 24 hrs, I think, before passing away. This is another really tragic story.

In general, the primary difference between the two is the person's motive behind exploring the cave. If they are simply going into a cave for enjoyment and an adrenaline rush, then it is referred to as spelunking. On the other hand, exploring caves from a conservation or biological standpoint is called caving. I don’t know about caves with water in them. I’ll have to look that one up too.

This one is nuts. They should never have been in that cave without being cave certified however, I think they said this was in the 70s and idk how things were then. These are the 5 golden rules of cave diving. 1. Always use a continuous guideline to the surface. Since there was only a line to the top of the rock pile they should have ran their own the rest of the way. Thus would have prevented them from going into the false domes. 2. Save two-thirds of the total air supply for returning to the surface. This way even if they got lost they would have had much longer to find their way out. 3. Carry at least three lights during the dive. Primary, backup and a backup backup. You never know when a light will go out. When his flashlight went out he should have had another ready to go. 4. Limit dive depth to that appropriate for the gas being breathed. Since they only had regular air they shouldn't even have gone into stage 2. 5. Be well trained in cave diving and mentally prepared for the dive. Regular scuba diving experience and training does not suffice for cave diving experience and training. This is not a cave they should have dived in if they had never been cave diving. All of this was so avoidable. Very sad.

It's all about being responsible. I'm not a professional but I dabble in a few extreme activities and the key is not to be an idiot. You have to know where you stand. There are caves that are forgiving and they may be more advanced than you're used to but they're safe to push yourself. Then there's caves where you need special permission just to go on. Some people have no business doing any of it and that's something to be aware of too. Something like what they did would have been addressed before it even happened with my team. You have to know where you're going, know where the hot spots are, and what to do should you hit one of those. We went hiking with a friend once and she ended up freaking out when we accidentally got turned around. Despite us having talked about any and all possible scenarios, she was new, it all went out the window. A few times she almost got ALL of us hurt but even then we had to stay calm. It wasn't till we got back in the car that the person who planned the hike laid into her. It was extremely dangerous, we had told her what to do if anything like that happened, and although it was a bad situation it was one the rest of us had been prepared for. In the end you never know but you can largely prevent a bad situation by being responsible. It's important to listen, know your limitations, do your homework for where you're going, and stay calm. Another time we were spelunking and this girl brought her bf who wanted to impress us. He was the only guy. Nature has a way of humbling us all though and we kept asking him to stop trying to be a hero. This is a safe, planned out, nice time. This was his first time doing anything like that though and he showed no respect for the location or us despite, again, having a Stern serious talk at the beginning. He kept trying to come do stuff with us after but I vetoed it. This was when I was younger though. Now my best friend, who is usually the one to plan these things, and I do not allow just anyone to join us. You will not endanger my life by not respecting how serious some of these situations are. Once my friend almost slipped off the side of a mountain but we were like a well oiled machine. A movie couldn't have scripted it better. We all knew what to do and had so much trust in each other that it hardly phased us in the end. Another time we were dropped off at the wrong start point by a guy who should've known better. As soon as one of us started questioning the terrain we ALL stopped. One of us took out a compass, the other her phone to asses a signal or where it last checked us at, another a map, and I started doing the math (time, distance, supplies Etc.) When we realized the location was completely wrong We had to postpone that trip for a day. There was no "well we're here" or "maybe we can make our way to the actual start". Nope. It was no longer safe. Our "ride" wasn't going to know where we were, the start was too far to chance it, we didn't know if we had been left there for a nefarious reason, and the people who had our planned route weren't gonna know this had happened since it wasn't planned. Which sounds reasonable but the amount of people we've met who just decide to go to plan b because they're lost despite still being able to walk away....

It's not even hiding, you can see the peak from the base of the mountain. More than 300 people have died doing so, with about 200 bodies still up there in the frozen wasteland. Sometimes people just do things to do things. Because it makes them feel better about themselves. Because they think it's fun or enjoy the adrenaline rush. That's not naive - that's certifiable! Cave diving is an extremely specialised skill, and even so, plenty of cave divers also make misjudgements for all kinds of reasons. Even when it's a site they have dived multiple times before & believe they know well, circumstances can change rapidly. A flash flood in an area kilometers away can make it's way into underground cave systems and create dangerous unseen currents or sudden silting of areas usually crystal clear, or safety lead lines can be lost. For ordinary divers to assume they can do it is not just dumb it's suicidal. The mental image of one thrill seeker diving into the forbidden channel, with several more 'hyped up young explorers' excitedly deciding on an instant to dive in straight after is just sickening. Remember, in the absolutely extraordinary 2018 Thai cave rescue the very experienced local navy diver who died there also had no cave diving experience. Again, the way was narrow, silted up and he became disoriented and ran out of time and air. There were literally only two people IN THE WORLD who - working together- had the particular unique ADDITIONAL set of skills that had the remotest chance of getting those kids out alive, and even they were astounded that they succeeded. As to why cave divers do it? It's the 'frontier thrill' of 'going where no-one has gone before' thing... Testing ones self against the elements etc. Same as climbing high mountains etc. There are other names for this in psychological terms. Thrill seekers and 'adrenaline junkies'. The problem with these types of personalities, is not just that some are prone to develop a 'false sense of competence' { because I've done it before therefore can do it again, and again... } when in fact balancing on the fine point of a life & death edge is just one tiny mis-step - one minor misjudgement - between survival or not, but also, their 'perception of risk' { judgement} becomes blunted. [# Parkour and Base Jumping are particularly well known for this hazard ] Worse, these risk habituated characters, exuding an aura of huge confidence & competence, lead the less experienced right over the fine edge also. "Oh they must know what they're doing". "I'll be safe with them." WRONG. And then what do we hear? The same tired old cliches and platitudes trotted out: "Oh they died doing what they loved." Did they? 'Good for them' ' 'Go for it Dude!' And the people left behind? Particularly the kids???

There exist other caves in the area where others have dived, maybe the 16 deaths are inclusive of all the caves combined deaths. I'm with you Jamel, risking my life for a thrill is not on my agenda. However, I do understand others have the need to experience death defying feats, and thrills. For most of us, riding a roller coaster is death defying enough, and for others, a roller coaster is a No-Go! All sorts of people out there, and we need to accepts one another for who we are.👍✌🙏

In the UK this pastime is known as “pot-holing” where experienced cave explorers/divers explore new sections of caving equipped with oxygen cylinders, not for the inexperienced!

Yes, cave diving is a thing...a very dangerous thing. There are a lot of people...experienced people...who have met their end cave diving. The special mix of gasses is higher in Helium. Exploring the unknown is or can be addictive. Though some caves that have been scientifically studied because there was evidence of potential historic interest concerning humanity.

Cave diving and other dangerous adventures I think are done for a few reasons...thrill seeking, adrenaline rush, bragging rights, personal goals at the seemingly unattainable. Some folks have an inert confidence in their own selves that far outweighs most folks common sense for safety. 😄

Cave diving is scuba diving in underground bodies of water. One who just explores caves is called a Spelunker.

Mr. Ballen should do a video about a 28 year old that died in a cave. He got stuck in a hole and the rescue team tried getting him out and they ran out of ideas. The guys body is still in the cave.

Yes, cave diving. But....I'd only send extremely experienced cavers/divers. People that KNOW and NEVER cross their limits. But still. Even then EVERYTHING could go wrong and they would die.
