The main protagonist is the grown up version of the child great Aunt Ann sent away from Chen village years before the start of the game. In the scene where the player character hallucinates traveling through the back alleys near home, where you hear neighbors criticizes her as a parent and Mia's sick mom, she says her parents abandoned her,- referring to her parents from the village. Officer Will admits in game that he used the disappearance of Mia to lure the player character back to Chen village. He does this to force Aunt Ann to choose between her and the little girl, so he can get his hands on the "celestial child" that the Aunt was protecting to sacrifice her. That's why the Aunt wants you to leave Chen village immediately.

Pretty sure the "What's your real name? Game finished?" achievement means you are actually Jaz from "Great Aunt An's" picture. She is your real mother. She sent you away YEARS ago (before you even remembered the village) to save your life, because the town believed you to be the "celestial child" and you were going to be sacrificed.The whole town is driven insane from the guilt of sacrificing their own children and it not working. The police officer Will still believes you are the celestial child after all these years. He even mentions I brought the celestial child back to the village. And who brought you to the village to find your "missing" child? But, the TRUE celestial child is Mia. The celestial child was supposed to be missing an ear, hence why the villagers all thought they had to cut off the children's ear before they sacrificed them. But, Mia was BORN that way, hence MIA is the ACTUAL celestial child and is the one needed to complete the TRUE sacrifice. I'm pretty sure the demonic entity "mother buddha" causes sores/ulcers and eventually insanity until someone completes the ritual and releases her, which is why everyone is so desperate to complete the ritual and so obviously insane. They are at a point of trying anything to make it stop, even burning each other at the stake as an offering, when there are no more children left. And it even still affects you and Mia, even though you are out of the village. While you were away from the village you had Mia and the ulcers started forming on her body. They were ignored until the point of near death. In the hospital memory, you can hear the doctors saying they "can't believe she waited this long" and "her flesh has begun to rot." In the end the doctors couldn't save her. And the guilt of not taking her to the doctors sooner push you to insanity. The "Risk Consent Form" (which is actually a very normal procedure in hospitals, especially in situations were they were not likely to survive in the first place) in your mind, gets twisted into them making you sign it so they can kidnap your baby. And you are the one who wrapped up the baby in those rags, when they gave your the body back. And you just believe that the hospital took your baby, even though the town is full of gossip over what truly happened. I think that police officer Will, (still believing that YOU are the celestial child) found you, learned of the gossip of the town, saw you didn't accept the truth and were STILL looking for your daughter. So he took the dead baby back to the village and placed the "Relic" at the shrine. And told you he thinks your daughter is there, to lure YOU back there, in a last ditch effort to save his daughter. The Mia we meet in the game is either a child that had has been lied to and told that we are her mother and had her ear sliced off so we would believe it and protect her until we finish the ritual so the demon can posses her body. Or it's another child that is already possessed by the demon, mother buddha. And pretends to be our daughter to get us to perform the ritual and release her. Either way, "Great Aunt An" knows this and plays along to trick you into finishing the true ritual, so she can have YOU (her daughter) back. She even says in the game, this was "ALL FOR YOU". Great Aunt An knows (and is the only one who ever knew) that the actual ritual needs to take place at the end of the "haunted" tunnel, not the shrine. The tunnel is manifested as a hallway of memories of the truth, which we can not handle and "Great Aunt An" pulling us down this terrible "tunnel / hallway of truth" to complete the ritual, makes her appear as a cyclops demon to us. Which we kill, not knowing we just killed our mom/Great Aunt An. And we snap back to "reality". And in a frantic panic, all we want to do is save MIa. So, after all the talk in town of giving the offering / the relic (the real celestial child/ /dead baby Mia) to the mother buddha, making the hand gestures and praying to the mother buddha, she will make our dreams come true and will give us what we want, we frantically do exactly what the demon had led us here to do. Heck, she even taught us how when Mia asked us to pray with her. And now that the TRUE ritual is complete, Mia, a.k.a. the demon is released and comes out and thanks us. This is my original theory I posted over on Insym's LIVE version of this video.

I searched everywhere and this seems the most plausible explanation. Mia is clearly missing when she was a baby, and clearly went missing as a baby, and definitely died a baby, as seen at the end. So the girl in red is definitely is not Mia. We know Mia is definitely the celestial child because she is missing an ear when born, and the aim of the village is to find the celestial child and offer it to the mother buddha. Then my biggest question is, why are they trying to kill the girl in red in the final bossfight? Isn't the only thing left to offer the dead Mia and chant the incantation?

The acting in this *goes hard.* Not only the player character, but even some of the random freaks she bumps into. Overall I'd say this game was...unsettling, and that acting really helped build that. The end when she's praying is fucking unsettling as hell. I feel like they really asked the actors to give 110%, and they did so

The movie adds a lot of context to the game so its worth a watch if you get a chance, as the story of the movie is based on the same "lore" but told from a different perspective. Its easy to see why the games story can be a bit confusing without watching unfortunately. I promise you'll appreciate the games story much more if you watch the movie too! Spoiler warning: Just one example where they ask "What is your name", the response is that you write your name on a tag and hand it to the followers. You don't use your name any longer while in that village... This is what it means to give your name to mother-buddha and you have to pray to her at least once every 10 years once you're part of your first ritual. The little girl in the game village is not your daughter.

Best idea of story I've got, so SPOILER WARNING ahead: You're Jaz, Great-Aunt An's daughter. That is why Great-Aunt An was so insistent on her leaving, insistent on her staying away, and why you refer to your daughter's last name as "Chen" like the village you're in. It is also why Mia still ultimately suffered from the illness, and how she was born without an ear. I think the reason she was involved is because she truly believed in the words of Mother Buddha. That is also why I believe she got up and looked panicked when the MC reveals she's infected too, as it basically cements to her that she must sacrifice the child she has raised for the sake of the child she sent away. She is also the scary eyeball monster, as it repeats the same exact quotes she did to the MC when they first spoke. The other little girl, per the notes, was written on and used as sort of a conduit between Mother Buddha and the villagers, aka prepping her to be a "celestial child". Great-Aunt An grew attached to the child, and refused to have her sacrificed at first because of it. That is until Will forced her hand, making her gift her up in return for the safety of her daughter (the MC) that he had brought back to the village (he sent the note, with the idea that her daughter was there). This is per his note where he literally says the above, and also when he's yelling at the MC in the ending scenes. She had also given up her ear recently, but not too recently, as it was mostly healed but still a different color. The whole twist is, I believe, that they are not sacrificing children as a blood offering, death offering, or even something to do with purity or motherhood (as they are children). They are trying to find the perfect vessel for Mother Buddha. That is why it never worked, and why Will was driven to insanity of losing his girl (the fact that she was a completely bared skeleton means she was there for likely years) and like the MC, convinced himself in a way that she was alive and everything he was doing was to "save her". He wanted to find the perfect sacrifice so she wouldn't have to be. His daughter, while in "waiting", likely just died from the illness most others had died from. And just like Will and the MC, An had the same motivations. Mia's obviously dead. However, she was likely the perfect vessel he wanted to find, as she was born without an ear and was said to bear Mother Buddha's mark, per the doctor's notes. She was kidnapped from the hospital, a doctor there faking her death (possibly Hong?), and brought back to the village to be healed and brought up to be a celestial child (per the doctor's notes and per a different thing saying how those that bear her mark is someone who is hers). A lot of release forums mention things about remains, so she was possibly tricked into giving the hospital Mia's "remains", which is how they would kidnap her easily. She ended up actually dying from her illness at Chen Village, so they wrapped her up and put her on an altar as some sort of offering--their way of "consulting" MB. The clay statues are also likely molded from the bodies of other children, which is why the child refers to them as her friends and why the doctor was pictured holding one. I believe the flowers cause the disease and Mother Buddha capitalizes on that. She makes it worse and manipulates the townfolk to help her find a vessel, driving them insane and obsessed with their families. Although Mia was the original perfect sacrifice, the child always had a connection to MB (the migraines, making MC give up her name, talking about how MB took aunt lily because of her ear) and was very much okay with being a sacrifice. But she's not the perfect one, so no one actually ends up healed while Mother Buddha now has a body thanks to the MC praying using the old perfect vessel (Mia) and now deluding herself into believing Mia was the child. That's why she looks directly into the Mother Buddha and why she is acting crazy at the end, because she had fully taken over the kid's body and ultimately gotten what she wanted.

i wish i had been on this live stream, i just watched the movie a couple weeks back and could've have given some context haha **MOVIE SPOILERS** the girl was reciting the names of the parents lee ruonan and chen letong who were from the movie and were part of the ghostbusters team we saw in the ghostbusters house. so in the movie, lee ruonan was pregnant when she visited the village. chen letong was her bf at the time and the father of the child, and the village is his family's village. he went into the tunnel and died from the mother-buddha's curse. fast forward many years later, lee ruonan gave her child up to a foster home because she was too traumatised from the tunnel event. she got better eventually and took her child back, but the mother-buddha's curse started to manifest. her child got super cursed and possessed, people died, and lee ruonan ended up sending her daughter back to the foster home. she then went back to the tunnel to try to free her child from the curse but ended up being cursed herself and died. this game is set after the movie, and implies that the child mia we meet here is lee ruonan's daughter who was found by officer will. sidenote: the movie is actually really unique because the incantation they keep repeating is a shared curse. they make as many people as they can recite this incantation so that they can share the curse with others and basically dilute it. in the movie, the idea is to make the viewers recite this incantation together so that we can all share in this curse to save her child (and the villagers). so what happened to the village after the movie? after desecrating the mother-buddha shrine in the tunnel, the curse manifested amongst the villagers as that plague sickness. so they've been sacrificing more and more children as part of their rituals to appease mother-buddha. from the gossiping neighbours, this is what i gathered... mc was abandoned by her parents, likely implied that she's actually great aunt an's daughter that she sent away from the village. mc's name is chen jiajun which relates her to chen letong and being a family member of the village. her daughter had been born without an ear, implying that her child had already been given up to the mother-buddha due to her family's curse. her daughter then manifested the mother-buddha's curse (the hospital shows the same symptoms as lee ruonan's daughter in the movie) and then died. mc is in denial and thinks that someone kidnapped her child so she puts up posters and newspapers ads leading officer will to find her. in any case, from the ending cutscene, it definitely implies that mia is actually lee ruonan and chen letong's daughter from the movie and not mc's real daughter. and the curse continues to live on. feel free to point anything out i missed!

With the "gossip" I honestly think what happened is the mother signed the consent form. The form is very standard when you go under for surgery, trust me, I have had 13 myself. >.< So it sounds like her daughter died while being operated on, and it drove the mother insane. Huge guilt is on her shoulders because she felt like her signing the form allowed her daughter to die, maybe she thought the daughter doesn't need the surgery, or maybe she thought another doctor would have done it differently, etc.

I think maybe we were lured in and indoctrinated to replace the aging Great-Aunt An as the girl's next carer. The girl definitely coerced the MC to run through the steps to dedicate herself to the Mother-Buddha (praying, writing her name, etc). So the game actually happens after the beginning of the movie. Timeline: Six years ago, movie main protagonists, Li Ruo Nan, who was pregnant at the moment with her daughter, Chen Ruo Tong (these are the two names that the little girl was repeating at the end of the game) traveled along with her boyfriend (who’s from the Chen village) and a friend to the Chen village, where they met the LITTLE GIRL and GREAT AUNT. The little girl is a celestial child, and she said to Li Ruo Nan that Mother Buddha really likes the unborn daughter in her stomach. They ARE the ghost hunters mentioned in game and they wanted to get something juicy for their documentary. For that reason, they broke the seal to the tunnel and went inside which the Chen village used it to SEAL Mother Buddha, containing her curse away from the village. Now that it has been broken, Mother Buddha released her evil power to everyone in the village and also killed Li Ruo Nan’s boyfriend and friend. She escaped safely with the unborn kid in her. Ever since, the Chen village has been suffering from Mother Buddha’s curse, which is why every villager is trying desperately to appease her. Then some time passed and we proceed to the game timeline. Our main character, originally named Chen Jia Jun, is also a celestial child and the biological daughter of Great Aunt. In order to protect her from being sacrificed to Mother Buddha, Great Aunt sent the main character out of the village and changed her name to Li Jia Jun. Our main character doesn’t know any of this, and assumed her parents just abandoned her for no reason, which made her mentally unstable. She then had Mia, which was born with the curse from Mother Buddha. She may be a celestial child, which is why the Chen Village stole her from the hospital and made her into the wrap. Our main character basically went crazy trying to find Mia. My assumption is that Mia actually died in the hospital during the operation, and the main character knows it, even though she refused to accept the truth. Which is why when the little girl came running to her and calling her mother, with MISSING EAR AND THE BUNNY TOY, the main character still refuses to acknowledge the little girl as Mia, because deep down she knows, Mia was already dead. So the game is basically Officer Will lied and lured the main character back to the Chen Village wanting to save his own daughter (who already died for a long time but he either is crazy like the main character or he’s having hallucinations from the flower). Officer Will forced Great Aunt to choose between the two celestial children which to sacrifice, the main character or the little girl. Great Aunt chose to save her own daughter (the main character) again, agreeing to sacrifice the little girl to Mother Buddha in order to appease her and stop the curse. The main character didn’t know or understand any of this, wanting to save the little girl and had hallucinations while mentally breaking down, killing Great Aunt and giving Mother Buddha the wrap of Mia’s body, started praying to the statue like crazy. Then it’s the actual movie. Movie is set six years after the ghost hunting team broke the seal to the tunnel. The wrap of Mia’s dead body in fact did not appease Mother Buddha, since the curse is still around and making people suffer. Li Ruo Nan and her daughter, Chen Ruo Tong both are cursed and that’s the movie plot. Now for some details: The weird hand gestures and the praying words are what the villagers use to spread the curse to others. The more people you spread, the curse on you is weakened. Mother Buddha takes full control on cursing you when you give her your ACTUAL FULL NAME. This is why when the main character in the game told the little girl her name she felt dizzy. Is the little girl Mia? No, Mia is dead, her dead body is in the wrap. However, remember when the little girl said Mother Buddha will make people’s wish come true? The main character wished for her kid to come back, and the little girl wished for a mother. In the end, they both got their wish fulfilled, that is why at the end of the game, the little girl looked at Mother Buddha and said ‘thank you’. All the clay statue of children are made of actual children. The Chen Village human trafficked kids and sacrificed them to Mother Buddha.

It's Taiwanese, similar to Hokkien. I'm not 100% certain because I don't speak it myself (and there's so many different Hokkien dialects), but my parents do so I recognize a lot of the words. In Taiwan its extremely common to hear both Mandarin and Taiwanese spoken interchangeably just like how it is portrayed in the game, at least drawing from my own experience
