Well, you corrected the obvious out of sequence, error but, even pausing the video and putting on my glasses, I can't see any remaining error. Maybe it's that vortex that causes you to think there is an error! Man, you have outdone yourself, Gary. This is a massive piece of art, yet, functional art! A lazy susan mechanism was a great addition to the piece. When you're not using it on a table you can hang it on a wall and hypnotize visitors! Get rid of those pesky insurance salesmen! Great job, as always, buddy, keep'em coming! 😊 Phil

Thanks Phil. Yes the out of sequence was a big boo boo. Having trouble getting anything to fit to my liking I forgot to look at what I put in when I did get something fitting good. So at the end it is hard to see but when I was testing the fixture I tried some cutting with the grain. Those should have been tossed before I cut all the other pieces. So I needed one more burnt oak piece and saw this one thinking it was cut properly. It fit so darn good I did not notice the grain going long ways. So it is very hard to see...except for me! So I said: Oh NO! No no no you have to let it go! You just figured out where I can store it. What a great idea! Thanks buddy. I ask quality control and she could not see it so all is good! Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Gary just wanted to tell you how much i enjoy watching your videos. I learned somewhere that you were a Patternmaker by profession . I got paid to make patterns from 1979 to 2015 and still consider myself to be a Patternmaker. I like most of all planning and making segmented bowls . It's so much like patternmaking. I could go on and on. As one Pattermaker to another thanks for your videos .
@ThePapa1947

Thanks so much Owen. I sure loved my job as a wood patternmaker. It was a 5 year apprenticeship and the saying was once you finished that you started learning. I remember hearing that the first time and thought it sounded strange. But I learned that was so true. Some things I learned on my own and were just the methods that I used. And even today I strive to learn new things in my little shop here at home. If you were making patterns then you were a patternmaker so thanks to a fellow pattern maker from another. Gary

Thanks so much Tuffy! I could slide it to the end and do it. This lathe does not have threads on the back side. When I was an apprentice I did turn a 6 foot bowl on the outboard side of a shop made lathe. Patterns were made for the castings and the rest was made out of very large timbers. It looked like a bowl but it was a very large pattern. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 Hi Gary, I know you are extremally capable and well equipped in both wood and medal shop work and machinery. In the past I needed to use the outboard end of a bland headstock without any threads. I made a very close fitting and deep engagement expanding collet that worked very well. Easy quick installation/dismantle and as solid if not more so than threads. If ever interested ? .... TM

Thank you very much Gary. It did a good job. I wished I would have used better wood. This stuff moves around a lot. Wood has gotten pretty costly to buy and I wanted to test the system out with decent wood but not overly expensive. Next one I will use something nicer. The thing of it is the way I cut it I needed boards that were at least 9 inches wide. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Gary! I have seen some folks use salt to slow the slipping, but of course that makes initial alignment challenging. I wonder if some variant of a long worth chuck would make the glue up easier assuming a glue with a slow enough cure was used. Please do keep doing these, I truly admire your ingenuity and creativity. I think I better master doing the smaller version before tackling the big one. Again thank you, really awesome.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 4 ай бұрын
Thank you very much Ian! I am opposed to using salt in the joints. And one is not being able to make fine adjustments if needed. Gluing everything at once leaves lots of ways to keep it from slipping. That my be something I do if I should do another large one like this. But it is so big hard to find a place for it. We used it for a few family get togethers and will probably use it next month. It was more of a challenge than anything. Smaller is better in some cases LOL Thanks for watching, Gary

Well I think your design was amazing. Nothing that I will ever try. Call me a spectator. But I wanted to mention that you need an American beauty lathe. I love the 25" swing over the bed. Thank you very much Rick. I agree I do need one of those American Beauty lathes. Maybe I can enter a contest and win one LOL. The patternmakers lathe we had at work could swing over 30 inches over the bed. I think they scrapped it out a few years after I retired. Was too big for my shop anyway. I put the finish on very thin and used a space heater on low to blow over it. Did not take all that long. Thank you for watching and next weeks will be something I think you will like 😉 Take care, Gary

Good evening, Gary. Absolutely love this. Very impressive. I saw the last two pieces on the glue up, excellent fix. I didnt see the grain but read about it. You really maximized your lathe. Great project. Looks like several turners would like two build your jigs and make their own tornado.

Thank you Ray. I was a bit mad at myself when I saw the miss placed segments but I got over it and the fix worked great. Band sawed the pieces out and left just enough to use a sharp chisel and a tool I made that looks like a paint scraper but made from part of a file. Then I saw the piece with the grain going the wrong way(a practice piece when i setup the jig. Should have been tossed) I never considered surrendering so I sanded it and finished it and call it an odd piece. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary

Another great video. I have the Laguna 1836 also. I bought the 20-in extension from Laguna. With the extension in the lower mounted position, One can turn up to 31-32 inch diameter. That makes it nice to start large pieces and trim them down to whatever size you need. Great video.

Thank you Stevio. I though about an extension but I really do not see much use for anything bigger than 18 inch. Years ago I had a floor stand and a small lathe with step pulleys. I turned 36 inch stained glass form for a lamp by sliding the head stock to the other end. I do like the extension setup like you have. Thanks for watching, Gary

@@ThePapa1947 I agree. I do not turn very large bowls. 19 in. I believe is the biggest I have turned. But it is very handy if I have something 20 plus inches and an odd shape to true it up to 18 inches or less and then I can use it and the normal mounting position. Plus it's nice to have the extra mass to reduce vibration...

Thank you Bob. Well most of those comments saw something early on that I fixed. So far one person notice the what I was talking about. A boo boo I left. The other one I fixed so it was not longer a boo boo. So if you look close you will see all my pieces are cut across the grain. There is one of the burnt oak pieces cut with the grain. I tested a few cuts that way and decided to go with the ones cut across the grain. Less chance of the saw following the grain. The big problem was not throwing that piece away. I saw it while sanding and decided to leave it(even though I could have replaced it) Then have a quiz at the end. Thanks for watching, Gary

I loved this particularly the process used. You’re not stubborn but a creative wood artist genius at making jigs and designing intricate designs. Glad you mentioned peripheral speed at 500 rpm, probably could’ve made more of a safety issue out of this. My wife didn’t like finished product but appreciated the work involved, she only saw the end result.. I thought the lip of sapele was not utilised as well as it could have been, too thick I thought as it would interfere with removing and replacing objects on board. Also it made finished product look not delicate and refined. But that’s only my opinion, I think that board needed something on rim, possibly turn sapele a little thinner. Sapele is also referred to as African mahogany and grows on same latitude as Honduran mahogany, yes a beautiful timber. Thanks for sharing Gary. Would definitely appreciate more of a look at making your special cutting jigs, they’re amazing.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Жыл бұрын
Thank you Greg. I did not care for the lip either. The good thing is I still have that tenon on the bottom and can turn it down. I did not put enough thought in it and was wanting to get it done. Broke my rule...never get in a hurry. Figuring there may be things spilled I wanted to give it plenty of protection. If I turn the rim down I might flatten the shine with some scotch brite. I well let my wife decide on that. Thanks for watching and your opinions. They are much appreciated. Take care, Gary
