This is how I get most of my wood too, off cuts from branches, scraps from my husband's cutting boards. Walnut never ever disappoints, it is probably one of my favorites to turn.

Turn 'em, don't burn 'em! Black Walnut is pretty much my favorite wood and the result you got here is precisely why. Glad you discovered the Dovetail chisel. I love mine. Though I am a novice turner, I'm also a self admitted gadget freak and have a bad habit of buying tools.

Thanks so much Dave. Yes I think every piece of wood should get a chance. I have a left and right hand dovetail tool that I made from a cheap set of turning tools. This one is much nicer for sure. Thanks for watching, Gary

Gary, I was given a number of irregular chunks of cherry and maple from a neighbor that didn't look like much more than firewood and never knew what to do. Your inspiration in this video is just what I needed to make some small, but beautiful bowls. You know what they say when you are given "lemons"...... Thanks again for sharing your skills and creativity.

For sure there was plenty off wood to turn on this piece. The beauty of the grain is still there no matter how big. It is slowly going away. We heard that the owners of the ship want to get it out for the metal. Now that would be costly as I would not want the state paying the bill. Or they could charge them for parking it there this long LOL.

Very nice! I’ve never bought a bowl blank, its all from helping friends fell trees so I get a lot of odd shaped pieces that are too unique to throw away and can be turned into attractive key/coin bowls. I’d say turn it all, you will make someone happy receiving it.

Turnin' beats burnin' any day. I always look forward to seeing the inside of the bowl. The concave curvature does something almost magical to the grain, but I would like to se something convex someday, to see if the effect is similar.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 Жыл бұрын
For sure turning is the best way to go. The bottom becomes convex and should give you that look. But someday maybe I will turn a blank with the same side being both concave and convex. That will give you the look you might be talking about. Good idea! Thanks for watching, Gary

Black Walnut never seems to disappoint. I have a lot of it. I know that I have more than I'll ever be able to turn. Recently I did a bunch of weed pots out of some smaller diameter branches. Mounting them a little off center I kept some bark or remnants of the bark on one side kind of maintaining the rustic look. They turned out nice. Your bowl is a beautiful example of Black Walnut. Beautiful bowl Gary

I ground a small spade bit into a recess tool. But I never use it for anything else because the shank doesn't have enough strength for deep work.

I made a left and right hand recess tool from some cheap turning tools. They worked ok but this is a much better quailty.

I always enjoy your projects, and yes you could do more of this type of project, most of the wood I get is small, parts of branches and such and I am always looking for ideas what to do with the smalls. thank you.

Nice Gary! Keep ‘em coming! I’m always picking up the trimmings from other bowls and wondering what can be done with them. I know it isn’t the most challenging turning, but it sure is satisfying 😊 Thank you. Cheers, Rick

Thanks Alan. This piece came from a giant Black Walnut tree on a fruit farm. A few years back they cut down all the English Walnut trees because the nuts were not selling well. I could have gotten 10 dumb trucks full of the wood. As it is i loaded my truck. Today I got a number of burls that came from the same farm. Not sure what would they are yet. Thanks for watching and everything we have to turn is a gift for sure. Created by a master.

Burn walnut? NNNOOOOO! There should be a federal law that strictly prohibits Walnut being burned. This little bowl is gorgeous! The small spalted area lends a load of interest. I’m pretty sure it was that area that caused what looked like a camera glitch just before you turned it around. Beautiful bowl. Excellent turning. What’s not to love? And no burning of walnut unless it’s too small to hold for turning.

My fire pit has an alarm on it. Should a piece of Black Walnut should get within 10 feet of it an alarm comes on and the hoses start spraying LOL. This is a No Burn Zone for beautiful wood. Thanks for watching, Gary
