The next stop on our hummingbird photography tour was the La Brisa hummingbird feeders. I was thrilled to spot the Green-backed Hillstar, a new hummingbird species for me. This hummingbird is relatively uncommon, so La Brisa is exceptionally fortunate to have attracted them to their feeders.
The bird is mostly green above with a coppery rump, an irridescent blue throat and breast, and a grey abdomen. The tail is mostly white except for greenish central feathers. The bill is long, straight and black. Unlike other Hillstars that prefer very high altitudes, this one is found on the lower slopes from 3500 - 6500 feet.
My name is Carole Turek and I am on a quest to photograph every single hummingbird species on the planet! There are over 350 types and I currently have photographed more than 250 of them.
