Future Backrooms developers, take notes! This is how to do this genre right. The Backrooms is about liminal spaces, that feel familiar but.. wrong. It's about feeling dread at what might normally be comforting, and a general sense of foreboding. Tension that doesn't let up. - Leave things mysterious. "The chairs are toxic/eat you/dissolve flesh" is not as good as "The chairs are dangerous". Why is it dangerous? Can they move? Are they dangerous to touch, or even just be near them? Will they do something only when I'm not looking? The open ended threat makes you question everything and puts you into a state of unease around a simple.. chair. - "Other people" should be only traces left behind, and never completely explain what's happening. Convey desperation, loneliness or other negative emotions to trigger the psychological horror aspects. - A monster chase should be used as sparingly as one would a jump scare. It's good for transitions, to palette cleanse and set up the next area.. not as an ongoing means of building tension. Once it happens one time, the threat will create enough tension to set the mood from then on. - Keep level design in mind. Note how the level after being chased is one where it's a long tunnel with no way to dodge a pursuer. You don't even need a monster... that recent threat is enough to make this level very uncomfortable. - Small changes to expectations can have a huge impact. A light is red instead of white, or even just slightly off green. A single planter in a vast open space. The elevator is a cramped off center triangle. It doesn't take much to throw you off and make you feel uneasy. It doesn't have to be blood and gore, or a scary monster.. often just something "not right" works better. This is such a subtle thing but I'd love to see this proper genre grow.

Arguably -Jumpscares are pitiful -Would leave them wanting more out of the monsters ( *I don't think the backrooms needs a ton of entities* but if theres even one in a game and all it does is appear for a few seconds turning a corner just disappoints me) -Small changes to expectations are good, but there should be some interactivity between the player and these things *some* of the time

The subtle horror generated by the level design (lone object in a position where everybody can see you. corridor with empty cubicles on the side and a dead end. an empty space hidden behind two very narrow gaps) is brilliant, it shows a great deal of respect for the genre. They don't need to hide monsters and jumpscares and 'creepy' clichés in these situations. They don't need to tell you why it's 'scary'. This goes for the 'Have you seen this man' / 'Deja Vu'/ Chairs notices too. It doesn't need to be "The chairs are eating me alive!", there's so much more mystery in it. If you approached the mannequin from the other side, you'd have seen the shadow of a person before you saw the mannequin.

The triangular shaped, claustrophobic elevator was sooooo good. I had never thought of that, but it's such a simple but amazingly effective way to drive home that unsettling feeling. Despite being chased.. despite having no other way to go.. That elevator made him pause a moment. That's how powerful such a tiny change made. This dev knew what they were doing when making this kind of horror.

When you've played so many of the same kind of game with the same aspects, like the Backrooms, with monsters trying to kill you and you have to find stuff, a game like this is so good. It's something you expect to be chasing you but since you're never 100% sure you always have that feeling of either being watched or about to be chased and yet nothing happens it's such a good way of unsettling the player.

The immersion of this game is just insanely good, as is the tension. Seeing the random toys strewn about in random places made me uneasy and sad. I'm not a mother, but the idea of kids and/or their belongings ending up in a place like those is just heartwrenching.

Wow this game is really impressive and from what I've been watching lately, this might actually be the best backrooms game. It really captures my opinion on how backrooms should be, inducing a feeling of looping inside a liminal space instead of the generic monster chase the other backrooms games have. Amazing video as usual Insym!

The absolute genius of this game is that all it had to do to make you wary of chairs, even though literally none of them attack you or anything...is put a note early on that said "The chairs are dangerous." I just seen this game just now. Wow, this might be one of the best Backrooms game I've seen yet. I like the idea of not having to lose sanity on the long run. The tension around every corner, the dark hallways, the "WTF" moments, and the anticipation of something lurking next to you, are what makes a good Backrooms game (at least for me). I do like the concept of integrating SCP ideas onto this game, it kind of adds to the lore of the game. BTW, there was a number briefly shown when Insym cracked the passcode to the computer... I wonder what's that for. Also, the text shown in the static screen also says "Help me I'm stuck here" or something like that. That one gave me goosebumps.
@Solizeus

I like that they use the lore where the backrooms are an experiment of the SCP foundation to achieve unlimited storage space by breaching the dimension somehow and by doing that the reality inside got all twisted and creatures from other dimensions got in, though i really wish they would add people in it, maybe some dead ones, maybe even add a gun with very few bullets, mostly to kill other humans, maybe even add some survival aspect to it to force people to search the place like thirst and hunger, those mushrooms would look really tasty by then

@@greatbigbilly5091 Look, I see what you mean but I think it's not that simple. You see, my main point is, this game is non-canon (like Kane Pixel's or other newer iterations), and both parties from either community seem fine with this outside of the objective opinion that having SCP references to this seems "odd" or "forced" which I think it's not that in your face. Also, if there would ever be a SCP article about the Backrooms, it would be wildly different from the initial 4-chan concept, heck, it might not be named as "the Backrooms" either since SCP moderators have strict quality control and they know it. The fact that no one sued the creator of this game says a lot (aside from it being under Creative Commons so I dunno why someone would "sue" it for mixing 2 concepts together unless their now including actual SCPs into the game, now that gets dodgy and legally complicated) Basically, SCP and Backrooms are not objectively "ruined" because of this non-canon adaptation and I support this creator's artistic vision. It looks and sounds amazing so far and it seems to be closer to the 4-chan version with the lack (or sparse) of entities and more into the liminal spaces which is the Backrooms I sorely missed. I don't mind having SCP references on it as long as it doesn't take away the whole point of it and not just randomly adding SCP entities like 96 or 173, that's where I drew the line and he'll be in legal trouble if he did that. edit: forgot to add the fact that like the Backrooms, the SCP multiverse has no official canon or mainline universe so there's that to validate this game's existence. Also, not all the SCPs are connected to each other and they don't have to, hence why you can technically make multiple SCP articles that are related to liminal spaces (that is, if the SCP wiki mods would approve of it).
@randomcanadian6298

@@greatbigbilly5091 The original concept is basically the same as existing SCPs already, like the Infinite Ikea, Infinite Stairway, or Infinite Pipe Room. It's basically what would happen if some dimensional fuckery from one of those happened at a containment site instead. There's plenty of the same core concept.

10:19 Completely agree, a lot of these games are more like a basic maze or some kind of minimalist horror than backrooms. I've always been under the impression backrooms were an extension or alternate reality version of specific areas but with no life that become more strange the deeper you go, rather than a giant plain empty area with random walls.

If I made a Back rooms horror game, you wouldn't even see the monster, it just turns off the lights as it passes so a door hall way is casing you. Don't even need a model or sound effects. That would be the best kind of monster. Granted adding rooms with out lights would be a massive risk to pass through and I think it would make the game even better not knowing. Better yet I'd also add some form of speaker and doe the speaker sound when you have an incoming call when the monster is close.

Imagine someone doing like a semi multiplayer backrooms game where the first person to play it will find nothing in terms of story or clues, you have to find them and advance on your own. Every player can make notes if they have the resources for it or even use paint if they find some, to help other player that might join the game. It s like this game in the video but the first people to play it start with no information of tools.

I really don't like that you decided to guess the last digit in the password, I felel like games like this give you all the hints, so the last digit may have been in some new area you didn't explore. But that's just me because I usually like to explore in games. Anyways, what if "the chairs are evil" note was written by some of the lost people who got mad and scribbled some random shit to mess up with other lost ones and Insym has stayed away from chairs throughout the whole game for no reason at all? XD I wonder what would happen if you fall in the hole with baloons, though. I guess nothing good since the intended way seeems to be the other one. Oh, and about The Complex: found footage, it seems a sequel is in the works called "The Complex: expedition" from the same author, I can see it on Steam.

So with the backrooms wiki there is lore that there are other people stuck in the backrooms, so it would be cool to see like a survival horror game with base building mechanics and stuff for the backrooms, it would be similair gameplay loop to many other survival games, like minecraft valhiem etc. Of course with a backrooms twist to it I suppose you could maybe add some rougelike aspects to it. It would just be far to big a task for your typical indie devs just really based on the shere amount of information there is on the backrooms already, but it would be cool like you start in level 0, make it to level 1 either by yourself, or with some help, there you could join M.E.G, or maybe a game entailing the founding of M.E.G or somethign like that, go on planned expeditions to other levels etc. IDK, there is a lot of backrooms lore that could be turned into interesting and fun game if done correctly it just seems like it would a huge undertaking, but who knows Minecraft was orginally made by just one man after all, maybe we'll see something like that eventually.

I just need to be sure of something. the background music played in 37:05 felt like the music I heard on Dark Somnium's stories (He makes his music too) Is it really one of his music or am I imagining things? If anyone knows do let me know
