With the “Walking Away” story, I feel like the idea of a Zeus-like god or even just a deity trying to get a cleric to turn away from their current god could be interesting as a plot point (with the player’s approval of course). Could culminate in battling the angered god with the favor of the cleric’s own god thanks to their loyalty. But unfortunately that wasn’t what was going on and the DM just had a huge ego. Seriously, why do so many interesting ideas get wasted on really, really stupid DMs?
@nerd-mask723 Жыл бұрын
I also thought, there would've been great opportunities with that gimmick. It could be an PC haunted by an evil god, who feels that this character has some dark urges deep inside and from time to time he appears to them and tries talking them to give in to the darkness. And in certain situations the god tries to make them do something evil, like killing a prisoner or intimidating an NPC who they feel is hiding something and the player needs to roll a dice to resist the darkness. That could be a great personal sub-plot. But in this case it looks like, the DM only used it to make the Player act like he wants them.
@shadiafifi54 Жыл бұрын
Because they're using them to either get their rocks off (either sexually or power trip-wise) or try to flirt with a player IRL and it ends up being just a vehicle for their own issues rather than a legitimate plot device. Whereas a creative GM would be too busy chasing other plots and finding diamonds in the rough in lesser stories. Or considered the idea and got majorly creeped out at the implications.

'Abusive friendships and relationships are way harder to break from than an outsider may think'. Right, because none of us have ever had an abusive friendship or relationship? This challenge only exist for those that are dependent. If you pretended to cut everyone out of your life as an example and find that you would be dependent on someone, you need to work on severing that dependence. That doesn't mean severing the relationship, but you should not be dependent on anyone just to exist. If you could, hypothetically, sever all relationships and not find dependence, then you are in the position you are suppose to be, free of dependence. If you continue to find it challenging to leave that situation after confirming that you have no dependence, then this is a personal decision and you are choosing to stay involved.

I'm more a fan of romance happening naturally than have it be planned ahead with the DM. I've never stuck with a game long enough for it to happen but the game I'm in now holds promise. During our second game, my character met a strange half elf that ran the local black market but he was strangely bad at his job since he not only had a normal shop out in the open but also had no way of identifying the magic items he got acquired. I got a lot of magic items for cheap because he had no idea what they did and the one he did know, he gave me for free because it had a curse on it and he didn't want it anywhere near him (having since identified exactly what that curse is, I get it but it's also very manageable if not outright avoidable; great for future assassination attempts though). My character loves mysteries so this very strange little half elf has very much caught his attention. I hope once we get back to town, I get a chance to get to know him better. Haven't told the DM any of this yet though. Not sure if I should or not. On one hand, he doesn't handle improvising certain social encounters very well so this would give him a chance to plan ahead. But on the other hand, it would give him the expectation that this is something I'm very serious in perusing and I just want it to be casual for now. It might not even be romantic, they just might be good friends going forward. I've not sure what to do with this situation.
@tsifirakiehl4250 Жыл бұрын

(sorry if the grammar is fucked up, english is not my first language, tldr in the end) I remembered one of the stories I had with one of my friends at a time. Great storyteller, a guy who could improvise an entire adventure for us to play on the go, a guy who aced 3.5 mechanics like he was born holding a PHB, but as DM he sucked. He was completely adversarial to us as his players, and he sertanly picked favorites. You could easily tell, even if he powerplayed over all of us, some players were extremely targeted and ridiculed for not "doing good ,echanically" or "roleplaying good" even if they were trying as hard as the others, and some...well, his gf and his best friend were given a lot of focus during the game, they got a lot of stuff, magic items and all, they got positive attention (especially from DMPCs) and some of their characters (they participated in several campains at once) even became super-powered-dmpcs themselves, One of gf's pcs became a goddess while she played, which, I guess, is normal in high power 3.5 games? But favoritism and dmpcs aside, it's his adverciry to his players was the most irritating thing about his games and it is the center focus of a story I want to tell. DM tested some variant/homebrew 3.5e mechanics and he wanted to implement some kind of a variant armor mechanic, in which armor didnt affect AC as much as in vanilla 3.5e, but gave damage reduction for weapon dmg. For example, character wearing plate armor now was only AC 14, but had 8 armour, wich meant he recieved 8 less dmg from all weapons (i don't remember the mechanics qute clearly, as I was a sqiushy caster without any armour and it was, like, 5 or 6 years ago). This was the first real session we played with this mechanic and we had quite an important mission ahead of us: we should retrive some kind of mcguffin to start an ancient dwarven adamantium forge (I think???) and try to make our way home (long story short, we were lost at uncharted seas for a loooong time). I don't remember what that mcguffin was, but it was kept in some sort of treasury guarded by immortal goliath warrior. Our gm made a point for us this goliath was born and raised for the whole purpose of being a guardian for this place and was very, VERY powerful. His adamantine enchanted armor was inpenetrable, his attacks were savage and it we were to best him in combat, we should be very careful because he will kill us. I am not the most social person, and my character was shy, timid dragonborn girl, but I wanted to at least try to negotiate first, 'cause we were not ready to fight (our cleric/fighter lost his cleric powers, making him effectively several levels lower than us and we were pretty beaten). My character was a support/healer and mild pacifist (her divine feat demanded of her not to harm a living creature, but here teammates fighting was ok) so of course she wanted no one to be harmed. She had pretty high charisma and persuasion, but no matter what I said, I wasn't even allowed to make a check. "He was born to guard this specific treasure, so you are not convincing him" "no, I don't believe your argument, so doesn't he" "no, your words doesn't work, he is devoted by his life, he doesn't want to resign, no you can't convince him". I was frustrated, but after A LOT of tries we at least convinced him to let us look at his treasury. By us I mean only my character and her sister played by dm's gf. We decided that I try to distract the goliath, dm's gf steals the mcguffin and we gtfo. But the moment dm's gf touches the mcguffin (i don't remember if she was allowed to roll), the goliath I was distracting (I rolled somewhere between 24-29 persuasion) immediately agros on us and the treasury room's stone door starts to close. We ran like we had all hell broke loose, trying to not get stuck in this room with him alone. I got hit by alotoffamage, dm's gf tried to stop goliath from reaching the door to lock him up, but failed. We started fighting, but our weapons dealt almost no damage, thanks to his armour. I was buffing and healing till my mana (we used optional mana rule) was completely depleted and later I hid or tried to distract the goliath cause even if I could, I had next to no ways to hit him. We tried to look for ANY holes in his armour hoping we could take a penalty to do some more damage to his gigantic health pool. "No, he's adamantine head to toe". Any ways to remove any of his armor pieces? "No, he never removes his armour and it's magically wielded, so no gaps" Helmet? "Magically wielded too, no gaps, no visor" How he eats, drinks, shits, movess? "He doesn't need to eat or drink or sleep of defecate, he's magically enhansed and bound to this place, he never needs to remove his armour! And armour on his joints is magically wielded in a way that lets him move, but doesn't leave any gaps you can penetrate!" but...how he sees us and hears us without any holes in his helmet? "welp i guess he has teeny tiny holes in his helmet that help him see and hear with no penalties, but none of your weapons fits into the holes!" And then, we remembered; of course, some of us had alchemical fire! I don't remember if it dealt a lot of damage in 3.5, but one other time our gm wrecked us with alchemical fire which we couldn't destroy or dispell and this was THAT fire. We could, in fact, find a way for our barbarian (gmgf's character) to climb onto the goliath SOtC style (he was Large or Huge), try to throw this alchemical fire flask as an improvised weapon with massive penalties and cook this goliath in his OP armour. We gathered our collective luck and wached how our last chance to harm this boss enemy was in the hands of my sister when she rolled her dice. And...she succeeded! She actually did a lot of damage to him and we all watched while trying to keep him from putting out the fire, because, you know. that was our only bottle and only chance against him. We were ecstatic. We did it. We crashed this super hard challenge by our wit and our teamwork. He was still alive, but he is only several rounds away from being cooked alive, and... ...our GM says, looking all smug that the goliath we were fighting was hot only a fierce warrior and divine guardian 20+ lvl. He was a true speecher. A fucking true speecher. He just shook us of like flies, put out the fire and cast Power Word: Heal spell (or 3.5 analog, don't remember) to heal all the way back. He was full hp, all of his resourses back and we were low hp, casters with no mana, martials almost useless against him, and our only hope to destroy him gone, and he...he wasn't done with us. Idc what happened next, we kinda finished there and never continued, and some time later gm and his gf dplit up and I have never heard from him again. But this is only one story I have that includes him, and this is far from the worst. But that's, unfortunately, influenced me a lot and I myself had a lot of time to get rid of this kind of playstyle. TLDR: adversarial DM puts an impossibly hard enemy in front of us, don't let us talk or sneak our way out of the fight, depleats all our resourses, and then, when we try to use our brains and our teamwork to kill that enemy, DM just heals him all the way and completely destroys our morale and any will to keep playing his campain with srupidly strong NPCs

Regarding the ex-boyfriend GM with the "You know NPC Number 3 heard that, right?" I have a positive spin on that thing. In City of Mist, you create weaknesses which can be invoked to give a penalty to a roll... when this happens you also gain XP. The GM can invoke the weakness, so can you (my group limits players to doing once per session to avoid XP farming), and so can other players at the table. Well, my vigilante vampire had a weakness of "Talks to the Narrator" basically as a PTSD coping mechanism from a kidnapping as a teen made worse after she spent time deployed as a soldier as an adult. She doesn't actually think there's someone there but she's gotten to where she does it without realizing it. Basically expressing her thoughts as if talking to someone watching her. Anyway... at one point, I was describing myself sneaking up to a door and looking for the villain of the adventure... a Rift of Jack the Ripper. And one of the other players asked me "Don't you talk to the narrator?" So... yeah, all my out-of-character descriptions... Patricia was speaking out loud in that instance. And that's basically how we tied in the weakness going forward. Not using it all the time because it's not fun if it is all the time, but I loved the way they did that.

First Story: The cognitive dissonance of the GM telling OP that she needs to know every medical term and process a 1920's coroner would know, while simultaneously not knowing major facts about the time period he'd put his game into is astounding. This almost sounds like the GM trying to be shitty to his partner and then argue against any problem OP has with it with "It's just a game, you're getting so upset over nothing," as his excuse. I wonder if OP ever tried replying to one of the mocking NPCs with an explanation that she's trying to get more information about what's happened to clear her name, to sort of shut them up and get information out of them, but I'm guessing not, since OP said that they were very new & didn't know what they were doing, and that sort of thing sounds like it would've been shot down by the GM anyway, so it may not have mattered in any case.

From quick google search, yes it's in Exalted Deeds (page 53). I could've sworn I remember it being in a floppy book, like the ones that specialized in the classes. Exalted Deeds was hardback book.
@Nyx685 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I did use BoED for a few stuff (exalted arcanist, the vow of purity which iirc you can't eat meat or touch dead bodies unless you intend to revive someone) One class I was always curious about but never used was the Swanmay (same book, basically makes you a holy ranger able to shift into a swan)
@Ambers128 Жыл бұрын
@@Nyx685 It's been a while since I read that book. And the campaign fell apart within 2 months. The other gripe I had with that particular campaign was xp. We did marathon sessions of 12+ hours. I was at the first session. We almost made it to level 2. I had to miss the next one, where they did a ton and leveled to like 3. I came back and it was all diplomacy and exploration where we earned little to no xp. I didn't make level 2. Had to miss another week (iirc they played weekly so every Saturday from ~9am to 10pm. They did massive combats and leveled again, some up to level 5. So I come back and everyone is level 4s and 5s (we had 10 players), and I'm still almost level 2. I don't remember much after that, but the campaign fizzled with a week or two after that. Turning into a swan sounds awesome! I want to go pull from those 3.5e prestige classes for ideas on NPC's and even some bonus perks to reward my players.

4:08 sneak attack, is easy to understand. (and I haven’t even played yet everything I’ve learned is through osmosis) So long as your enemy is focused on somebody/something else you get sneak attack. It’s like in the original assassin Creed games. If the enemy doesn’t know you’re there and you sneak up on them you can hit them with the hidden blade. But if they know you’re there, you’re not gonna hit them with it. (and if I am actually wrong, please correct me)
@WolfHreda Жыл бұрын
In 5th edition, Sneak Attack is super easy. As long as you have advantage on the attack, you get Sneak Attack. There are other ways to get it, but that's the main one. The other ways are 1. If one of your allies is within 5 feet of your target 2. If you use the Steady Aim option from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which gives you advantage on your attack that turn if you haven't moved yet, and you don't move afterward. It's a fantastic option for Rogues, especially ranged attackers. 3. The Swashbuckler Rogue can use their Sneak Attack on a regular attack without advantage, as long as they're facing a foe one on one. They don't get advantage, but they can still do their Sneak Attack in that circumstance.
@Nazo-kage Жыл бұрын
@@WolfHreda I honestly honestly forgot about “steady aim” And I legitimately did not know that about swashbuckler rogues. I guess I did over simplify my description of sneak attack
@commonviewer2488 Жыл бұрын
Generally yes. Unless the target has some means of noticing the pc sneaking up on them, advantage! Which means Sneak Attack
@TheAusar Жыл бұрын
Your enemy only has to be distracted by another guy being in melee, or you have to get some other kind of advantage, like true strike or fairy fire. Of course attacking from stealth works, too.
@WolfHreda Жыл бұрын
@@Nazo-kage yeah, the Swashbuckler is a fantastic subclass. Also, though it should go without saying, never take True Strike. Steady Aim outperforms it in every regard, and it is almost specifically written to be the most worthless use of your Action you could take.

For the first impression story, the meaning of 'tourist' is something that comes over from WH40K, some of which overlap with D&D spaces. Ngl, some Warhammer fans are like the Soulsborne elitists of the TTRPG space, tourist is just their term for 'casuals', even throwing it out at people that are very dedicated over a small disagreement of opinion. “Tourist” is somebody who’s not really invested in the hobby, and has only picked it up for the short term. Usually said to insinuate someone’s opinion doesn’t matter. Think “not a true fan”.

Experience in most of these stories is wack I would just give exp after eatch battle based on the strength and for every line of rp I'll give a bit of exp which is a good passive way to do it. Why do people don't use Exp Share rules to level up the party closely. If somebody wants to grind or level up everybody gets that but with less exp because its party exp and not individual exp.
@hopejohnson6347 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I've never seen it work out when different amounts of XP are awarded. We've been giving out shared group XP ever since we started playing and it takes so much stress out of the game - for both players and the GM

“Are you an asshole” is such a silly question to ask your players. Whether you are an asshole is not for you as an individual to decide, it is a matter of public opinion and perceptions about your character.

Though I'm not certain what exactly the third stories DM meant by "tourist" since I've seen people also use it for simply new players, I personally see it as a name for people who say they really know the hobby and have read all the books yet in actuality have never even looked through to the Player's Handbook (comparable to irl tourist's visiting a major city in your country and acting as if they know the country and your culture better than you who lived in it since birth). I personally wouldn't see it as gatekeepy if the DM meant it that way but if he simply meant all new players and/or inexperienced players than yeah, that is a quick way to remove lots of players who might be really fun to play with.
