When you stay in cheap hotels don't expect a lot, there is a reason why they are cheap by cutting quality. Stay in better hotels for good experience. I have been in India 7 times never stayed in cheap hotels and was always a good experience.

Don't be sad by reading comments. Maybe the the country in which you live, there cheapest hotel would be clean and good. But it's not the case in India. We will impove I am sure of it. With coming years we will become more clean and hygiene. We will respect nature more and keep it clean and green.

stop bullshitting, 1200/day is not cheap for a tier 2/3 cities in India. It's hotel irresponsibility to provide dirty accommodation. Learn to take criticism. He is just showing the reality. If you are worried about country image, maybe do something good to improve it.

PS- That tuktuk guy is working like a broker, he will show you cheap hotels but ask you to pay more so that he can get commission from hotel for getting them customers.

You get for what you pay. It's not like there aren't good places to stay in india. You can probably stay in a 3-4 star luxury hotel for 50$ a night which shouldn't be a lot by western standards.
