Man, it won't hurt ya, I take them all off but the top one. Then I start taking it off the bottom pops out. Once the tension is off the spring you can remove easily. Now,,, putting it back on is a whole other thing.

Old video but just what I needed to see. I have a 71 that has a kick only, but the case is ready for a starter and as I’m getting older (still a young pup to some of y’all at 32) there’s days I just don’t want to kick. So this showed me exactly what I needed to do. My clutch doesn’t have the gear I need on it. Off to look for the right part now!

It may be easier to find a clutch basket with ring gear already on it. Try ebay.

That right hand shifter is a real mind teaser when you ride 3 other machines with the standardized left hand. I ripped my bike between stopplights and about killed myself stomping on the shifter to stop in time. If thats how you decide to solve the issue its your rde. i ciuldnt stand it on my 72 so i put 75 crossover in it and reworked my brake up to my right forward control. You have a real old school aproach and love for that look. Going to be a sweet ride. wrenching in a old shed with dirt floors is about as real as it gets and most likely relates to 90 percent of us watching you. the last time i used a ratchet strap for a makeshift tool i woke up 2 hrs later with sunburn and a shiner!!! lol ! work with what you got right. i could keep going but enough blabber! I Like you videos. keep it going !!

My brother had a newer ironhead sportster where someone had used an older 1968 frame on a newer drive train. He had an issue where the drive chain would occasionally contact the oil tank among some other minor issues. His solution was to get the correct frame, which he did and then everything lined up correctly.

Ive been loosely following your videos for quite some while, but I came across a 1975 XLH 1000 (11,248 miles) purely by chance, so now I will be focusing on your series about building these bad ass old Ironhead Sportster's. I have been riding a 75 FX Harley (that I built on my porch while doing parole) nearly 10 years ago. It's a nice bike and I love it. There's nothing else like it. I love these old bikes! Anyways, I digress... this Ironhead has been sitting in my buddy's garage for at least 10 years (He lost count!) It's all twacked out, to say the least, but I'm gonna hook it up over the next few months. I built up a 74 Ironhead when I was a youngster (early eighties), and it was my first Harley. That Sportster is long gone now, but the tattoo of the Harley wings on my shoulder are still remaining from when I first got it! Ha ha! Along with this urge to wrench and ride old Harley,s firmly set in my heart! Thanks a million for sharing your knowledge, and have a cool day!

75 & 76 was a band aid from factory to comply with government mandate for standardize all to left shift. Agree, cable rear brake poor at best. They finally did it "right" in 77. Own a 1974 & 1976. Switching from one to the other can really play with your head for shifting/braking.

Them straps come in handy. Hat a flat on a lawn tractor that wouldn't seat not even with starter fluid. I wrapped the tire a tightened till the side walls flexed out. Hit it with air and beat it with a small mull hammer and it took about 15 minutes compared to the 45 fighting it otherwise. Was hard to loosen the strap but I kept airing it till it seated and began to fill.

I have had my hand on the ye old shovel sportster back in the late 1980s It was a 77 sportster. It had the electric starter with the swing arm frame with side shocks all original. I had to chane all those case needle bearings for the four cams as well as the cam cover 4 bushings and the transission main shaft was shot and wiggled up and down, so I had the bearings all replaced in that by a harley shop and i believe digger as was his nae had to replace that mainshaft. Then an upper engine bore out because for how ever it got the way it was had standard pistons in cylinders that were 40k over creating a piston to wall clearance of 45 thousandths (horrible), so the jugs were bored out to 60 over and I bought 60 over pistons and that worked out good. . Here are same things I liked about the design. An engine oil vent which came out of the cam cover in front and went to the back of the air cleaner, but I took rubber fuel line and ran it above the top of the chain so that any blow by would help to keep my chain oiled .

I had a 1933 Flathead Harley at the same time I had my 48 Indian Chief. One was left hand tank shift and one was right hand tank shift with reverse throttles. That screwed me up and i almost hit a car on the Indian so my cousin made the Indian left and shift right hand throttle so it was like the Harley. He had warned me about riding both bikes with different controls I should have listened he has been riding since 1956 and is the best machinist and bike mechanic i ever knew. He still rides and is building a 47 Indian now and he will be 80 in Aug.

I’m having similar challenges right now trying to put a 1979 XL motor in a 1975 frame. I ended up cutting the “footpeg bracket shafts/crossover” off the ‘75 frame so I had clearance for the sump pan added to XL cases in 1977. I’ve had to chase down all the 1977-78 rear (drum) brake control parts. The ‘79 originally had a rear disc brake and the footpeg brackets bolt to the motor, not the frame (1952-1976). All this work to get rid of the ugliest factory frame of all time.

Make sure you shim the inner shifter shaft with washers or you can shim the pawl assembly. If you don't you might have trouble with that ball popping out of the cradle in the pawl assembly.

I'm not too sure,but isn't there a shim that goes on the main output shaft of the transmission,that if you don't get it in there,or forget it,you won't have 3rd gear? It's a great looking bike,but I understand that a lot of those parts are almost inaccessible these days! Snowing yet again here in Indiana.. My shovel is almost ready to go for the year,too! HeySaddle Tramp, I remember that pressure plate problem also, I used a big 3 jaw gear puller and hooked it on the back of the clutch basket and screwed the center screw right into the plate bearing, Works like a charm and costs nada! Your videos are cool keep 'em comeing.

Yep, I use a 3 jaw puller on my '79; ideal for getting the plate off, and just about do-able for getting it back on.

Right hand shift...just like the Good Lord intended for an ironhead. It took a bit to get used to the right hand shift when I got my 74, but now I'm used to it. I got rid of my kickstart completely after the ratchet plate let go on me, put a Cycle Tech starter on it. A piece of hardwood flooring and two threaded rods has worked for me to compress the clutch spring many times.

No. Didn't have the guts to do that myself. I took the clutch basket to my local bike shop to let them do it. Good thing too. After seeing what they went through, I certainly would've messed it up.

I can really identify with your situation there - I have a habit of picking things that are not quite compatible. Then there is lots if work to make things fit - I lost count of the amount of times I later find something available that does the job I struggled with to make things work together - usually at less than half the financial cost. I suppose you are lucky that the bikes you are miss-matching were 'transitional models' .... Good luck, and I hope no one says that line ' You don't help yourself much - doing things the hard way...' This is something i went through.. 77 was the year harley retooled for the left side shifter shaft.. i have a 76 chopper build.. that i turned into a left foot clutch.. right side jockey.. had to remove and plug the shifter shaft.. cause i used a 200 rear.. which required a 1" off set front sprocket.. which mean i had to completely remove the kicker.. i went through all kinds of bs tryin to build my chopper lol

Hey brother, question. I have a 1979 motor and I have an early frame like that. If I keep the left side shifter and use a hydraulic brake for the rear what would need to be done to be able to put that motor in there? I’m gonna use forward controls also. So basically it’s a welded rigid frame and I’m going to use forward controls with a left side shift for the 1979 and hydraulic brake for the rear brake anyway so I don’t need any linkages. What do you think about getting the motor in there? I guess the shifter doesn’t have any effect on anything because it doesn’t attach to the frame at all but the break won’t either since it will be hydraulic from the forward control with a disc in the rear. But I hear about clearance issues for the motor.

I would think that if the holes match up on the motor mounts, you shouldn't have any issues with fitment.

i had a 76 the nice thing is you can push the bushing out and convert it to a right foot shift which i eventually did. mine eventually became a stroker and no matter what we did with clutch messing with the trans etc could not get the bike to to come out of first gear with a load on it and that is when it was left foot shift so my friend shadow who is a master mechanic for harley said screw it get rid of all the bullshit and make it right foot .which we did i dont remember if it cured the stuck in first problem but got rid of all the bullshit they put on 75/76 sportsters oh i do remember we put a barnett kevlar cluth in it and that cured the stuck in first problem.one can of worms opens another can never fails actually after watcing your vid it i remember how involved it was changing it over.those damn needle bearings.newer sportsters used a caged bearing so much better.great video tramp!!!!

Yeah they had a lot of problems in 75 & 76 with all the extra linkage causing issues in the shifting. That's why the reconfigured everything in 77 by relocating the shifter pawl shaft; causing it to come out through the left side of the case and out the primary. That fixed everything.
