Making Rom Dumping/Direct Reading easy is what emulations needs the most. It's an Open Secret that 99% of people just pirate the roms. Being able to do itself closes that issue, also incentives actual collecting, which is kinda cool since many of these old systems will start failing soon.

@@TheAmazingDolph Physical cartridge are going to decompose and harder to repair every year. Also no shade, but actually wanting to “own” your entertainment is getting more and more outdated every year. Young people like Netflix, Steam and Spotify more than they like physical discs. Same thing with games. Only the most enthusiast of people will want to actually physically collect their games. Also collecting became more popular the game would be even more expensive and less people would bother.

@@TheAmazingDolph It would incentivize collecting, but thanks to a-holes like WATA inflating the market for physical retro games, it really doesn't. I would buy a device like this and use it to play GB and GBA games I already have, and for everything else I'd download a ROM and put it on an Everdrive because screw the used prices. Used sales don't give the company any money anyway, so I'm not taking from the companies by downloading a ROM instead of buying from a scumbag scalper.

Also Gameboy Video roms take up 1GB, which if you have the GBA Video roms, why? There are better ways to watch Shrek.

regardless of the flaws, I think stuff like this _really_ needs to be more common. Emulation itself isn't illegal, but it's the ROMs that cause problems, so why not have more little emulation machines that use the actual cartridge or disk? Joey Jr is the best one of these I have seen. It works with GB/GBC/GBA games and as far as I can tell has no issues with any official games. It dumps and writes from the built in memory, so it's literally just like moving files from a usb and since it dumps saves on them bring changed, you can run a emulator directly from the Joey for a seemless way to load and dump to cart when your playing. I mostly like it because it nice to be able to play Pokémon games at 10x speed from the cart.

The guy from epilogue worked on the submodel as well so the similarities initially turned me off from it, good to see that there will hopefully be more improvements/updates though. Also if you have any GBA SP shells laying around they make a nice housing for the submodel. Though some minor shell trimming for the usb-c slot is required. Made mine into a submodel sp not long after I got it and threw a dead screen inside for weight. Totally unnecessary but would recommend. (Clear shell if you still wanna see the crashing wave)

I got this thing to use with my Pocket and it works so effortlessly. Took me about ten minutes, maybe less to archive my 40 GB/GBC/GBA physical collection. Plus I backed up my childhood saves from all my GBA games. Sadly, wasn’t able to save my Yellow file, but what’re you gonna do? 🤷‍♂️ I’ve never been one to be a fan of emulators, but being able to use my own ROMs is extremely appealing to me. Especially since I can transfer my emulator or Pocket Open FPGA file over anytime I want. It’s like the convenience afforded by something like a switch, but retrofitted to work with old hardware. Even if it isn’t anywhere near as convenient as just plopping the switch in the dock, it’s still pretty easy, and worth it for someone who loves collecting physical media. Plus anything that can put to bed any of the legal gray area regarding piracy is great. It’s fully legal to use your own ROMs, and hopefully it’ll make emulation and preservation easier in the long run for anyone who wants to try these games. It’s not like Nintendo is gonna do it. And frankly, Nintendo has no room to be angry about us “pirating” their retro games. “How can one steal an item from a shop that doesn’t sell that item?” I can’t just go onto a modern console and buy a copy of Pokémon Ruby, so in my honest opinion, it’s 100% ethically correct to pirate the game if it’s not available in any other way.

There is only so much play time that you are legally bound to if you do not own a physical copy of the game. It is within the normal players weekly playing though; you should not have to worry it too much. I forgot where exactly I found the interview at where a Nintendo rep said this exact information. Everyone is and has been emulating their games have been that gaming policy. They have always had an answer prepared just in casenif they were asked that particular question.

I've been dumping/restoring GB saves and extracting GB Camera pictures since the late 90s. Back then I used a GBC GameShark that came with a parallel port to linkport cable and a Windows 98 program to use it. I'd take an out-of-game snapshot in the GameShark, transfer it to the PC, and then use an emulator that can import/export GameShark snapshots to convert to standard sav files. For GB Camera, I would then open the sav file in a program called Tile Layer Pro (typically used to extract/insert graphics for NES and GB romhacks), resize it to the right width and scroll until I started seeing pictures. In more modern times, now that computers don't have parallel ports, I can use the GameShark to take a snapshot, restore it onto a GB flashcart, and then read it off the flashcart into a computer. Neither of these methods extract the ROM though, but every game's ROM is readily available for download so that won't be a problem unless I get ahold of some prototype cartridge. The GBOperator is definitely quicker and easier though.

For the same price, the GB Operator is leaps and bounds better. The better design and software support makes it a device that is LESS niche and I think that is where the hype comes from. I personally plan to buy one as it excites me to get to interact with physical cartridges in this way.

this is actually really useful for me because I don't have the tools or knowhow of how to replace the batteries inside the GBA carts for some events in Pokémon and this will let me upload my save and continue on an emulator so yeah this is actually incredibly useful

You actually could have done the training and lessons yourself prior to the pandemic. That is what the sellers on Ebay did. There was a seller was buying the individual Berry eReader cards online building them up to ultimately sell as a bundle option of choices for the consumer. We could have done the same thing, there was enough duplicates being sold at the time. We just did not want to hoard them without not being used. We also did not have the E-reader that we have now to actually use them. It is the Original EReader, not a copy like the one that you likely have. There is actually one specific ereader card that has to be scanned with the original ereader. The other variety will not work with it at all. The specific ereader card was a Isabelle animal crossing card if I am recalling correctly. It even listed in the description of the product with all caps on the emphasis on the original ereader only.

@@skycloud4802 I like it. I'm in grad school, so I haven't had a lot of time to play with it, but I put it through its paces. The software is extremely user friendly and my eventual plan it to backup all of my GBA games to my computer. I still need to figure out the controller. Ideally I want to use an NSO SNES controller, but worst case I think an 8BitDo will do just fine.

Personally I got the GBxCart because you can buy a cheap GBA cart shell, trim it a little, and use that as a case for it. It's pretty neat and only mildly disturbing to use a cartridge to read another cartridge.

I personally have an aversion to playing rom games for some reason. If I don't physically own a game, my motivation for playing the game goes infinitely down. I recently purchased a lot of the japanese authentic pokemon games and have been playing them on the color. My pokemon green had a really strange save file when I got it and I wanted to save it somewhere, which is where this thing comes in. I saved the game to my HD then started anew. And now I can run it in 3x speed without completing the awful grind that is Pokemon Stadium 2.

I think my favorite part of the GB Operator, is that you can stick a cartridge in, play it on your PC, and then when you're done, the save file will copy back to the cartridge. Sure, you could rip the save, run the game through an emulator normally, then copy the save back to your cart manually using GB Operator. But having it all automated, and being able to seamlessly go from playing on your GBC, to your PC, back to your GBC, is great. Especially if you need a quick cheat like fast-forwarding in a Pokemon game to get some grinding out of the way. Now personally, I don't want to play GB games on my PC. I have 'em already on my Xbox if I reallllly want to play 'em on a bigger screen. But I also have flash carts to play on the real consoles, and an emulation handheld to play 'em on. I'd much prefer to play my handheld games on a handheld device. BUT, I still wouldn't mind getting one of these one day, just for the few carts I have that still have save files. Hell, I still have a Pokemon Red from when I was a kid, with a working battery. I'm sure it'll be dying soon, but it's still neat.

The GBA Consolizer is an actual console with an HDMI port. Also, if you’re only gonna use this for GBA games you can use a Nintendo DS to dump ROMs, dump saves, and write saves. It’ll probably be cheaper.

There is a video that explains exactly bow to do on somewhere on KZbin. Also the creator of the firmware blocked the function on higher version firmware updates, so you have the use the one that is used in the video and lower. I found the video a while ago myself, so I can confirm that was at least found on KZbin. The person likely has the video bookmarked on his computer done so early that he likely forgot that he did it. The case is the same with a another video that I commented about on a another video. The user definitely viewed the video back then to.

For me, the main appeal is preserving old Pokemon saves. The battery in my Gold cartridge already died, and while soldering in a new battery was easy enough, the data is gone. Being able to back up the save, replace the battery, then copy it back to the cart is appealing, though I don't think I care enough to go through the effort. Sorry, Bulbasaur :(

Yeah, I gave up on caring about my saves ages ago. If I'm going to revisit an old game, I'm going to replay it from the beginning anyway. I don't want to load up Pokemon Red to look at a completed save where I can't do anything except rematch the Elite Four. I want to start over. Oh, battery died? Save is gone? Cool, perfect excuse to play the game again.

There is way to backup your Gameboy color saves. But that device also uses a battery that also die as well. It is a little bit tedious since Windows does not recognize the program that is being used. It is also an older program, I think as well.
