I didn't get laid off, but I got moved back to my previous position, and it had everything to do with my performance. I learned fast and was matching my counterpart who had already worked there for ten years. 7 others and myself got moved because of where we were located in relation to the retail side's needs because there is always high turnover on that side. It's tough not to feel like I am constantly defending my skills. I had high production in my old job too, which is also part of why they moved me back. But it's stressful and you don't get rewarded for doing a good job.

Before a big layoff at a company I used to work at they had a company meeting. The director of HR stood up and said 70 of you will be fired today. She said the people that thought it was funny to keep taking Fridays and Mondays off on a regular basis are gone. You know who you are. Anyone that's costing the company a great deal in health care are gone. Before the end of the day 70 people were fired. I was in my 20s then. I always remembered that day. Now they send you an Email.

I’m part of the layoffs. My employer decided to keep the low value team. I work customer support for our US team, but they decided to keep international team instead. However, there have been multiple complaints and “coaching forms” submitted towards the international crew for not doing there jobs. Almost daily. We always got praised by our leaders and customers for doing great work and service. But in the end, they still laid us off. Strictly, poor leadership just trying to save a buck, and not valuing quality “valuable” employees… in my opinion.

I’m 26, just got laid off this month. Took us two years to get health insurance with this company. Been with them over two years. Our company was bought out by another company. I’m pregnant, and I’ve only had insurance starting January 1st 2023, and was laid off January 23rd. That’s a sum up. Very scary. We are in baby step 5-6. Some of my friends are like… How are you still alive??? I said, we came prepared. And I immediately went out and found another job. Wasn’t just gonna sit at home. I Will say it was tougher then before to get a new job. But, I’m ready to get to work. Just gotta keep going.

If your company is public... you should expect to be laid off at anytime. It just comes with working for these big corporations. That is the management style to boost profits... cut labor costs until the remaining employees can't handle the strain. It is very Dickensian out there. Keep your resume current and add to your skill set. The idea that "working hard" or being a valuable employee protects you, is a farce.

Most do it by hiring freeze and firing. I remember at one time at my work it was almost hysterical when we were running short of work. As soon as material would come in we were running to be the first to grab it. But i have found that if you make yourselve available it is that simple. I just simply dont even worry about being layed off or fired, but rather finding that opportunity that im not going to like. But that too will pass.

We've been in a recession, it's easy to see. Many of these jobs available are in extremely specialized areas or fields. I know many many people who've experienced layoffs. Very unexpected layoffs mind you, many who are very valuable high value performers! But it takes time to find the right role fit for many of these folks. All is not lost but one thing is certain, if someone still holds to the myth of having "job security" it's time to realize how much of a myth it is. It's been said many ways, your only job security is your ability to perform, and the stability of those decision makers above you. Thank God for the emergency fund and getting out of consumer debt!

Happened to me at Louisville Slugger. Worked there for 6 years, when COVID hit they got rid of a lot of employees even after getting multiple rounds of PPP money. Then 5 months later the company donated $55,000 to a local food bank. Most I made in a year there was $40,000. John Hillerich sent out an email early on a Tuesday morning that people were being let go. However, for the next 48 hours we all waited to see if we were getting the axe. I finally got the call that I was one of the ones being let go.

How do you devise an exit plan though or even have a side hustle if your current job is 60+ hours a week and you have a family? I feel like a sitting duck but I also feel like my current job (dislike it - ruthless culture and no work life balance because it’s a global company) that I’ve been at for 5.5 years is more secure than starting somewhere entirely new. For context, I’m the head of a department, live in CT but office is in NYC. They want us in 3x a week but I am trying to negotiate 1-2x a week because my commute would be 3+ hours and I’m working 12+ hour days.

Just like the CEO of Morgan Stanley said, “We tell you your salary, we tell you your bonus, we tell you when to be in the office. You don’t have a choice in the matter!”. You have an illusion that you have a great job, but in reality you are just a number that they will cut if they deem it appropriate. I never tell a kid go to college and get a good job. I tell them to educate themselves in entrepreneurship.

Also most of theses tech companies took out a lot of debt to grow and cant anymore due to high interest rates… like most of the people on the Ramsey show but Ken is the one I really disagree with.
