@@grantguy8933 I work for a large global company that recently announced it was reducing its workforce by 10%. They let us know before doing mass layoffs, asked older workers to take a **nice** early retirement package, and will reduce the remaining necessary workforce over the next year. In the past they've done similar things to reduce the workforce over shorter periods of time. If a company plans appropriately and reasonably cares for its workforce, there's no reason for employees to wake up without a job with zero notice (let alone face to face). It's not kindergarten, it's running a reputable company

At least she was laid off from home. I remember working in a call center during mass layoffs of the last recession. They would call employees into a room to break the news; armed security would escort the just laid off employee to the door. They wouldn’t even let employees retrieve their belongings from the desk they’d been at for 15 years! “You’ll get your belongings in the mail.” There is nothing humane about it.

@@grantguy8933 I think the bigger point here is they couldn't support the staff they hired from an HR perspective in the first place. Because any corporation that can't give 30 minutes for an exit talk with HR is ridiculously below industry standard. Not judging the people on either side, it's just fact that Google/Amazon never planned to meet the standard because they knew they didn't have to. But frankly, most people working for them signed up knowing that they're risking getting screwed over in one way or another; these particular firms are not known for loyalty or integrity. I'm in construction. Layoffs in my industry come regularly and without warning. I have been laid off several times. I never saw myself as a victim and always saw it as an opportunity to start something new. I always made sure I lived below my means and saved my money for a rainy day. Companies cannot keep you on in the event they enter in to an economic downturn. They either have work for you or they don't. And I never cared if they treated me with dignity because I was already thinking about my next move before I got out of the building. People need to learn to diversify their skill-sets and stop relying on these cushy jobs that are mostly trendy.

Maybe if you’re in a downturn you don’t add 68,000 people rapidly to your workforce and then slash a bunch out of nowhere while you just produced $60B in profit. There was no genuine reason for slashes other than $60B in profit not being good enough to pump the stock price. That’s where it differs a lot. In construction let’s say those layoffs are normal practice so it doesn’t come out of nowhere and surprise you. It’s also something that companies have to do to actually survive. It’s quite different when you slashed a ton of people because the immense profits just aren’t enough to keep inflating your stock price because stock valuation is often not any true indicator of strong operations becsuse even an immense profit isn’t enough of the analysts want you squeezing out even more.

I work for a project engineering company and during the early part COVID we could not send engineers to customer sites. So we could not complete projects and get paid. Our management explained the problem and asked everyone to take their vacations. This way the company could ride through the cash flow problem and not have to let anyone go. We were not forced to do it and we were paid because the money was already there for the vacation time. Everyone did it because we are a team and management was upfront with the problem.

It's not just big corporations or a recent issue. I was given five months notice by a snail mail letter 20 years ago. My supervisor had not been notified until I told her, and it was somewhat random. (The superintendent wanted the employee demographic to be consistent with the student demographic. Attorneys wanted a retainer if you were White and wanted tonsue.) Whir. I was months away from being vested in the retirement system and just had developed a database, which still may be in use, that saved the district $250,000. On my last day, my supervisor tried to stop me from going to a job interview because of her rule prohibiting leave on the last day of the month. I got in her face and reminded her that the next day I would be without a job, since I had nothing to lose. She let me leave early for the interview, and I got the job.

I would have to guess they did it this way to avoid the confusion and troubles that come when you lay a number of people off at the same time. Some stick around, some don't, some cause unnecessary problems, (in this case it could constitute a real problem for the company), but I feel for the people only slightly, only because even being in my line of work for nearly 50 years, I've been let go, laid off, cancelled because a customer decides he's not going to have the job done, you name it. Not to be mean, but welcome to the real world. I.E... had a $2 mil contract in line for nearly 2years, bought approx. 70 k worth of equipment in the ready, government cancelled that set of contracts.
