I am in East Tennessee and lost my entire greenhouse full of plants like lettuce, peas, cherry tomatoes, radishes, etc. I had a little space heater going, but it couldn't keep up with the low temperatures we had here. I am sorry to hear you got sick. We were exposed to covid but thank the Lord, we did not get sick. We are hoping 2023 is a better year for everyone. Last summer was too hot and we all lost our garden produce then as well. Covid nearly took my husband, but he survived. Now we thank the Lord for each day we wake up to a new start for life. Each day is a new chance to do His will. We must be in His plans for a while longer. Take care and Happy New Year. Annie

You guys probably already know this, but after the flu, you have to take it a little easy, so that if it is possible for you to still get a little help, it us probably the right thing to accept that help. If you overdo, it can hurt your heart (through rheumatic fever, if I'm remembering right). Whenever I hear about a married couple with the flu, together, I remember my grandparents, who spent their honeymoon with the Spanish influenza. They didn't' feel right at the wedding, and then this. My grandmother said that the house they rented had a bed in opposite corners of the room, in which one of them took one bed, the other took the other, and whoever was feeling less horrible waited on the one feeling worse. I've got to say, I'm impressed with my grandfather about that! Being as old fashioned as he was about men's and women's roles, the thought of him taking care of his sick, new wife, while he, himself, was sick with this deadly flu, was an unexpected and gratifying surprise. But he wasn't so selfish that he wouldn't take care of his bride with the Spanish influenza! Just the same, it's an odd picture from him. Good for my granddaddy!
@juliemcgugan12442 жыл бұрын
Good for them! My Dad came down with influenza on my parent's honeymoon. It wasn't as serious as Spanish influenza, but he was pretty miserable and he's never been the best patient! LOL! My Mum spent her time either looking after him or running out to the chemist in the pouring rain (Scotland in October) to get him more medicine!

Oh my gosh guys! If I didn’t know better I would think this video was made about my past week+ experience! Lol I watched your video on buttoning up and I was doing the same for my chickens when a Mac truck came by and hit me and my husband. Your video paralleled our experience. We didn’t have any Christmas, sick in bed. My daughter still at home exchanged gifts. All else had to be cancelled. Having five kids and grandkids there’s traditions and welp not this year. Yesterday was my first day feeling like I was going to survive this and I was able to run to town. My husband still mending with a deeper cough than I had. Yep we got out of bed into the -8 with windchills of -35-40 degrees because we had to feed and water animals. Was tough, but the movement I believe saved me from inactivity and helping me breathe deeper (did have a fleece face shield on to prevent lung freeze while I was out in the frigid air) I’m happy to report the chickens survived! Glad you two are on the mend to full recovery! Ps get yourself a SQuip. Himalayan Salt Inhaler it is what keep me breathing and drying the lungs of excess fluid not to mention preventing secondary bacteria from breeding in the lungs. It’s a must have for anyone with lung issues due to irritation or illness. Makes for quick free breathing and healing. Think of salt caves for lung therapy overseas, right in your own home. Quick and effective! I also diffused sage essential oil which further encapsulates fluid in the lungs into the oil droplets, like a magnet for excess lung fluid, this is great for aiding in recovery of lung illness.

I was able to keep 5 ft high tomato plants alive so they could ripen. Took everything off after 2 weeks as the weather warmed up, snow melted off. Neighbors lost their plants, couldn't believe mine were fine except where the plastic directly touched the plants.

Oh my gosh, I am so very sorry yall were so sick!!! I'm glad you're feeling better and had your girls to help you. I totally understand how devastated you are about losing your plants. I lost everything in my greenhouse when the electricity went off during the night and my heater shut off. By the time I realized the heater was off at 3 a.m., the damage was already done. Not only did I have vegetable plants in there, I also had tropical plants that were gifts to me from very special people. Our pipes under our house froze and burst and we've been without water since Friday, the 23rd...and since my husband needs hip replacement, he's unable to fix them, so we're on the plumber's list. My inside hydroponics lettuce got aphids right before Christmas and they were awful and everywhere so everything went to the chickens for their holiday treat with a naked seed pumpkin. I still have to go through the set ip and deep clean but I had work yesterday (daycare my 2 year old grandpooper) I'm also restarting my leaf broccoli as it had aphids But luckily none of the trees or other house plants I have are infected. Tatsoi and spinach are also on the list. Oh I have lights like Sarah and Kevin. LEDs and even with all 7 -4foot long going it only bumped our electricity up by $3 $3.50 a month. Normally we get enough lettuce(like fancy colored lettuces that cost $5 for 4 tiny heads in the market) each month to make it worth running. At least one big meal a week with salad but constantly picking a few leaves for sandwiches or tacos. My son in law loves Korean BBQ lettuce wraps so he gets a couple whole heads when he volunteered to cook for his mom in law lol. Sprouting onions from seed starts about 3rd week of Jan. I might do purple asparagus seeds too

@@Emeraldwitch30 I do my best to separate everything, as much as I can, but there is only so much space. By doing that, if I lose some things to pests, I don't lose everything. I also do a dip treatment for things that I notice beginning with pests, but sometimes it happens so suddenly and pest numbers just explode, so it is less work to start everything over again, rather than try to reduce the damage to the original crops. Best of luck to you, with round two!

Fortunately, the virus was mild but had to isolate. About 20 years ago we sold our dairy cattle so we didn’t have to milk or feed cows twice a day. During last week’s blizzard here in Michigan, a snowplow and grater got stuck on our road. Years ago my husband used the tractor and snow blower to clear our road so the milk truck could come in and pick up our milk. Hubby is retired but we enjoy watching the farming/homestead channels.

Since Mother Nature is off her meds and is planning a huge warm-up over the next few days, hopefully you will be able to get the new lettuce plants in asap and salad for lunch will be just around the corner. All the best for the new year.

I am so sorry you guys were sick. I am sorry you lost your red lettuce. I am so thankful you had your daughters there to help you. I am glad you are getting better and shared with us. I was wondering what was going on. Please get extra rest and get better. Sending prayers for health.

There's a man and his wife in Maine that have determined adding two layers of sheathing inside their greenhouses with a foot or so air spacing, is like moving down two growing zones.

If you want to learn more about this method of greenhouse growing check out Eliot Coleman. He's the person who did all of the original research on greenhouse growing. He's in Maine. Originally started this research for market gardening so crops that have to be shipped in from other parts of the country/world that can't be grown in colder climates and harvested/sold fresh. Lettuce being an example.

My husband and myself had the flu too. The day after Christmas I started feeling it coming on. We canceled New Years dinner. It did take 2 weeks to get over it and it’s still lingering some. I wish you all the best and get over this. God Bless

I'm so sorry this hit you two. It hit our home, too. I'm still only about 70% back, and our Christmas was seriously abbreviated. Grateful there were no fatalities and that you two are on the mend. 💛

GH grower tips: 1) Break the thermal barrier. Anything on the ground is subject to soil temperature. & the 2nd law of thermal dynamics. 2) Bottom heat: just like humans, if your feet are cold, so is the root zone. Plants with a warm root zone can withstand colder ambient air temperatures. The heat will then gravitate to the plant canopy. 3) Lower plant cover: hold the heat down as close to the plant canopy as possible. 4) Heavy plant cover: think comforters from the thrift store. We use these in conjunction with additional 6 mil plastic on one bench. The other bench was covered with 6 mil & double 3oz. frost blanket. Our 450 buttercrunch lettuce + 300 cabbage seedlings survived a low of 2*/-16 windchill. We kept everything covered for just short of 5 days, heated with nothing but 3 separate strings of 72w halogen lightbulbs (12 bulbs total).

Sorry you all were so sick on the greatest Holiday of the year, glad you're on the path back to healthy. We didn't cancel Christmas but we postponed it until New Years Eve, it was just too dangerous for family members to drive for an hour with the winds, snow, and blowing/drifting snow. The only bad part of that is we aren't done with our celebration yet..lol. Most people have their Christmas mess all cleaned up already and we haven't even made ours yet.

So glad your girls didn’t get sick. You will bounce back but take care of yourselves. So glad all your animals made it through.

What a relief that you both are recovering from that flu and your animals all survived the frigid temperatures. Bless y’all and thank you for posting.

I’m so sorry this horrible flu hit you. I had the same thing earlier this month. I never get sick either, but that thing is brutal. I wish you a quick and smooth healing. So glad all is well with the animals. You take care, most importantly. 😊
