I’m quite fascinated by the concept of spontaneous synchronization. I’m a big fan of Steve Reich, who is a minimalist composer, who in his early years used a technique called Phasing. It’s when 2 people play the same thing starting in unison, and over time, one person gradually speeds up slightly until they’re one beat ahead, and the cycle repeats until the players are back in unison. It’s really really cool.

"What causes bridges to collapse." Is this the same principle at work in Nikola Tesla's earthquake machine? There's a story I read in a Tesla biography of how he set his earthquake device on a bridge, and within a few hours, it started shaking as if it were about to collapse, until he removed it. And it was such a tiny, inconspicuous device. It was also responsible for bringing down a building. Of course, this could all be an exaggeration.

The fact that they don't lock in a single pattern says that they are not truly synchronized. They are going at slightly different speeds and are messing with each other to cause partial temporary syncing. The best thing to change to get full synchronization is use a much lighter board.

You're not mentioning the variable with the metronomes. The fact that they all might NOT be set at the EXACT same number of BPMs. You could have 1 at 110bpm another at 110.1, then 110.15 etc. Plus you wouldn't be able to get an accurate reading on the swings either. Just the simple fact of holding onto the chain during the swing so you don't fall off, CAUSES a BIT of acceleration.

The swing example is false. You would need the center of mass to be the same distance from the fulcrum, which is hard to do with two different people, in fact, changing the center of mass by moving your torso and legs is how you swing. These differences overwhelm the small amount of force, or just transferred across the beam.
