A new documentary ‘This is Amapiano' tells the story of the genre to date, including the crucial role that viral dance challenges on Tik Tok have played in its global spread. #Amapiano generated over one billion views (1,6bn) on Tik Tok in 2021, with global streams on Spotify’s AmaPiano spotlight playlist increasing by 116%.

@@igbekle5498 I like how 9ja supports Nollywood. We do listen to Afrobeats too. For my perspective, it is amazing to see Amapiano started. In the 90s, Kwaito was big in SA. It then moved Afro House (in the 2000s), which was even bigger (hence the OG DJs like Oskido, Vini Davinci, DJ Fresh, the new generation - Black Coffee, Sun El Musician, etc.) Then, amapiano mixed the two genres, with Jazz. The outcome is what we have today.

I am Nigerian, growing in the 90s, the album record of FESTAC 77 (Black & African Festival of Arts and culture) was a staple in most homes. I think this documentary is missing Kabza de Small, DJ Maphorisa, MFR Souls, Gaba Cannal, and MDU a.k.a TRP, as they’re true originators of the style. To be fair, her music is fusion not 'pure' Amapiano, she was very strategic and created a sound that is more markatable. Also Amapiano puts too much emphasis on DJs and producers, who are less markatable than singers. Lets also not ignore the fact that she is also very pretty and shakes her little ass every opportunity she gets. Uncle Waffles is the most markatable DJ for that exact reason, but Tyla can actually singer. The stars aligned for her, and i hope she does well.

I’m a 45 year old black American from NJ… in about 88 I fell in love with house music.. A song called “The Warning” made me a house head till this day and house is my favorite genre by far. House was extremely popular in the 90s and in the 2000s.. I was heavy into labels like Nervous records, Strictly Rythm, listening to Louie Vega and Kenny dope who are legends. I even collected and spun some records in my day… Thing is that house music started fading over time with Americans. In 2011 or so I heard a track called “Superman” by Black Coffee which was and still is a cult classic on American house music mixes…. in 2015 I met a woman who is now my wife that is from SA. I was playing some house music in the car on our second date and she was really digging it. I mentioned Black Coffee and she told me he was from SA and how popular House music was back home… That led me to explore the SA house scene further.. Man, it’s like I unlocked a treasure of house music that I either never heard or never knew that a song I heard was from a SA artist or producer. I started discovering producers like Chloe De Song, Shimza, De Capo (I’m a huge fan of DJ Cairo)… Music was dope and added an element to the music that brought a different type of life to the house genre. So maybe in 2017 I went to my first Shisanyama (youth day) event… House music was fire, everyone was extremely friendly and inviting to me and the vibes were amazing… Having the honor and pleasure of hanging around my South African brothers and sisters I maybe remember hearing my first Amapiano song maybe in 2018.. Instantly fell in love with it! I’ve always been a fan of all types of music but this genre seemed to put together almost every element that I love about music, Also me being a bass Junkie helped me fall in love even more..lol. Me and now my wife always had discussions on if this form of art would be around for the long run. At that time I felt that it was a music that had so much room to grow into an unstoppable force… back to Shisanyama, since 2017 I’ve been every year and to hear the shift in the amount of Amapiano being played, ESPECIALLY in the last year was a wonderful thing to experience… The positive vibes it brings are a sight to behold. Men, women and children of all ages brought together, no violence, crazy friendly, just great so see the youth and younger adults enjoying House and Amapiano at events and even in social media. American House events here seem to be something more enjoyed by the 35ish and up crowd. I would love for these older house heads to discover the great music coming out of South Africa. Amapiano has so much life and will be around for years to come! (Also got to meet DJ Caiiro this year at the 2022 Youth day event 😊)
