Star Wars Outlaws asks advanced access players to restart their game, Warcraft implements a needed but awkward nerf, and even the best of games can't resist. Advanced access is here to stay, but that doesn't mean players will like it, and it means even more pressure placed on already stretched thin engineering teams.

the early access system is just a method of the company to gatekeep the reviews and walk-throughs explicit on KZbin. You don't want to have independent people play your game at the first days. You want to have the sponsored gifted idiots to make the propaganda in the first days, while the actual reviewers will NOT get revenue out of promoting a game, that costed for them 150€ to buy them. So they will wait or ignore the game. The actual gamers buy the game in a sale and laugh about the idiots, who bought the buggy games at the start. There are Zero Gamers playing the game. Reporters, blind supporters, some unfortunate idiots and paid propaganda is playing this game in these days.

The way a lot of AAA games are these days, feels like people are paying to be playtesters if they buy anywhere within a month of release. At this point it shouldn't be "don't preorder", but rather "wait a month after launch for bugs to be fixed and to see if they sneak in microtransactions".

Why don't they just wait until post launch reviews? There are plenty of other games to play while you wait. @Steve-xh3by
@Steve-xh3by 15 күн бұрын
As someone who spent 30 years as a software engineer, I'll tell you why early access is a good thing. Games are so complex now, it is totally infeasible to staff a QA team that could catch enough bugs for a smooth launch. Early access is a good idea and absolutely necessary if you want complex games as a consumer. Baldur's Gate 3 is a good example. If Larian didn't spend as long as they did in early access, the game would have launched in an awful state. The number of system interactions and quest branching in that game is insane. A team of 1000 QA testers couldn't adequately test that in a year. You need tens of thousands of people hammering on it. So, in the end, if you want games with a giant scope and lots of player freedom, then you should encourage early access. If you don't, and repeatedly complain or review bomb, then you won't ever get the games you want. The best developers and QA staff in the world can't test trillions of logical combinations and interactions.

The reason for 3 day early makes sense for some games. It's the whole "servers crash on launch due to overload, but within a week the playerbase will drop so far that they'll be at half capacity, so there's no real incentive to have greater launch capacity." Splitting the playerbase on launch in that case reduces load on the servers. However ... Doing this for single player games is downright stupid.

Quality control cannot work for the video game industry since there is no way for any state organism to be able to QA test all games before they release. Something better would be a refund policy, in France and other place in Europe we have the right to refund games for 14 days, if you have a bad experience you can get your money back. Now if you’re American you just need to elect the right people, think about it

I wish it wasn't necessary, but it doesn't seem like the market is self correcting. I take issue with physical copies not having a complete and playable game on them. Even if the packaging has a disclaimer that a download is required, physical editions come with the expectation that they contain a playable game. They're selling the illusion of a product. In those instances I wait for significant digital discounts. I value digital games less than physical, and I'm not going to participate in false physical editions. The fact that many of these games release with poor performance just makes it easier to wait for a sale.

"Okay, so we made you waste an entire weekend you paid 20 extra bucks to do... and you likely hate us right now. Don't worry, as an excuse we give you 20% of our next buggy early release". Yeah, they really need to have the game in perfect shape for the early release when they charge money for that. Upsetting all your best customers is just a very stupid idea since they are very unlikely to fall for this again. This debacle will not help them selling new copies since word to mouth spreads and having a whole bunch of angry customers stunts sales. I don't think even giving the 20 bucks back would make everyone who spent the entire weekend playing the game forgive them because a wasted weekend is worth more then $20 to most people. Getting the old save games working really is the only way to save this. Giving them 20% off their next Ubi Soft game is probably going to make most people angrier... They should have known better since they been around for a long time, it would have been better to just move back the launch for another week instead, people get a bit annoyed by having to wait for another week but destroying all their progress makes them furious. Paying customers are the most important thing for any company, if you don't keep them happy they will skip your next game and after first Skull and Bones and now messing up this launch, that will hurt Shadows sales unless they quickly figure out how to compensate their customers better.

Migration is a possibility. Essentially, figuring out what variables changed and mapping them to new ones, transforming data, etc. If the bugs are known, their effects on the data can be investigated. Then, setting them to a ,,good state" is definitely doable. Unless they fucked up so bad, that it's unpredictable or random. In that case, there still should be approaches, that could work.

At the time, AC Odyssey had been out for a few months so I sunk in about 80-90 hours into the game and even as an employee there was no way for me to request that my AC Odyssey cloud save would be migrated to my new account. If I couldn't do it while working as a back-end programmer (internal policy because it could totally be done through an internal tool that I was managing made for this specific stuff but only for QA purposes), I doubt they'll make a public tool or service that could help players out with any sort of save migration.
