"A classic is a work that has never finished saying what it has to say". - This is the definition of a classic given by Italian writer Italo Calvino. This song corresponds perfectly to this definition, it crosses time without aging.

OH, Good Lord! I’m so tired of whining. In any event, when I was little, I listened to the Beatles’ albums all the way thru and until Pink Floyd was given to me, I never experienced that with any band. Animals, I listened to 3-times and cranked my stereo up loud enough for my parental units to talk all about the album later at dinner…they loved it too, thank God!! But your’e absolutely right! All-At-Once for the message, and to have the full effect. Thanks for your comment!! ❤❤

As a lifetime guitarist I can sell you a HUGE musical clue... there will always be " Shred " guitarists... very technical and fast ie. Malmsteen, Rhoades, Van Halen, etc, etc but very few guitarists can play so FEW notes and get the same amount of emotion out if it as David Gilmour. I love the others but Gilmour has a one of a kind ability in " economy " playing.

I think it's more difficult to play Gilmour and get it to sound right...The way he bends notes perfectly is tough to duplicate 100%. When you shred it's easy to cover up and ignore mistakes...Just my $.02..

That’s because Gilmour understands that the music is important as a whole. It’s not about the shredding and going out of the way to make the solo noticeable. It about the solo belonging in the song.

The recurring mention of the “stone” in Pink Floyd’s lyrics carries metaphorical weight. “Learning to Fly”: In this song, the line “unladen, empty, and turned to stone” suggests isolation and the struggle for self-discovery. The “stone” represents the heaviness of the status quo, while the desire to fly symbolizes personal growth and overcoming obstacles. “Dogs”: In the lyrics, “the bad blood slows and turns to stone,” the “stone” signifies burdens or unresolved issues. It’s something that drags you down, akin to a heavy weight. Overall, the “stone” serves as a powerful metaphor for emotional weight, obstacles, and the struggle to break free. Pink Floyd often weaves these evocative symbols into their music, inviting listeners to reflect on deeper meanings.

Ohohoh Stacey! I really start loving you more with each day and reaction (you are exactly as emotional as me when it comes to music - and I am a hobby musician of many genres), you do a phantastic job!!!! I was just watching something else on KZbin and what do I see?! You did Dogs! Oh myyyyy Animals has been my all time fav album since I first heard it in school in 1985. Now I have to tell you a little story: One year later I was in London for a school exchange from our Swiss high school and found out, that this "factory" on the cover was there, but had no idea where exactly. And don't forget, that was before the internet! On my last day in the city I spotted the smokestacks in the background, took a look at the map and saw it: Battersea Power Station. I grabbed my friend who wanted to become a photographer and forced him to come with me to the trip south of the Thames. After a one hour walk through the seediest neighbourhood I ever saw til then (I was a 17 year old Swiss schoolboy :D) we arrived there. It was abandoned, so we climed the fence and took some pics. Since then I regularly came back to London and no trip, if shopping, theater, business related or visting friends is complete for me without visiting "the factory". Nowadays it's not recognizable anymore as it is one of the most posh and modern neighbourhoods of the city. As Dogs is most of Side 1 of the album, you could have done the whole concept with Pigs and Sheep on Side 2 :D

Atom Heart Mother was my introduction to Pink Floyd. I'm 63 now, and still many times musically, only Pink Floyd will suffice. The fact that PF can deep dive into subjects like death, human struggle, insanity and addiction, war and corruption yet wrap it in such beautiful music is magnificent and unique. They soothe my soul and I hope yours also.

I have loved this album since the first time I heard it (in the 70s). In the "deserted island" scenario, if I could only have ONE full album for the whole time I was there, it would be Animals. About a 40-way tie for second place. A cynic's profound wisdom... "You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to... so that when they turn their backs on you, you'll get the chance to put the knife in." Wow. One of my favorite lines EVER! Gilmour's guitar work is f-ing spectacular here. Maybe his best ever. He makes it wail. Soul searching. Relaxation. Reflection. Introspection. Suspicion. Doubt. Fear. Anger. Despair. Resignation. He can make us feel ALL of it! Just incredible. And YOU picking up on describing them as, "...so experimental, but so intentional at the same time..." THAT, young lady, demonstrates wisdom beyond your years! Stacey, your Floyd reactions have been wonderful! I really enjoy "proof" that their music appeals across the ages and TO all ages! Great reaction, Stacey! Thank you!

Some context of the album Animals and the songs meanings: Loosely based on George Orwell's political fable Animal Farm, the album's lyrics describe various classes in society as different kinds of animals: the predatory dogs, the despotic ruthless pigs, and the "mindless and unquestioning” herd of sheep. Whereas the novella focuses on Stalinism, the album is a critique of capitalism and differs again in that the sheep eventually rise up to overpower the dogs. The album was developed from a collection of unrelated songs into a concept which, in the words of author Glenn Povey, "described the apparent social and moral decay of society, likening the human condition to that of mere animals" These dogs are the cutthroat businessmen who feel they “have to be trusted by the people that [they] lie to / So that when they turn their backs on [the dogs] / [they]'ll get the chance to put the knife in”.

The moment you listen to this, and realize that there were no dogs barking, only David rubbing strings on his guitar while playing with the wha wha peddle, is the moment minds are blown. This song was supposed to be on the Wish You Were Here album. Its original name was 'You Got to be Crazy' and was removed from the list of songs for Wish You Were Here after Syd's visit. This composition was meant to be one of the 3 compositions to follow up Darkside of the Moon, as the band wasn't happy with Darkside and felt they left a lot to be improved on. At the end of the Darkside tour, they played some gigs in Europe for nearly 2 years, working on these 3 compositions which they had planned on making an album with them. The Animals album is their epic form IMHO. Love the reactions, remember to keep a watch for pigs on the wings.

I can see that.... I can see them being at odds with Darkside, despite it being so enormously popular.. I can see them considering DSoM too.. radio friendly maybe.. too accessible too pop even. which is why Animals is such a ..oh.. such a F.U. to the record and music industry.. and label as they were undoubtedly pushing for more radio friendly songs and Animals is anything but that. For me - Pompeii (the first one) is Pink at their height.. at their most powerful.. playing an empty stadium even

Where do I start with this masterpiece. It has been deeply ingrained life for 20 years. When I was in high school I would go to sleep to this song playing on my surround sound I built in my bedroom every night for years. It was part of my nighttime ritual. It is up there as one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs ever. More recently however I played this song while I was putting to sleep my beloved 16yo pit Bull Bean Sprout. I haven’t been able to listen to the song since that day 6 months ago. Thank you Stacey for helping reintroduce it back into my life with such appreciation and joy. This song NEVER gets old and is the definition of infectious. I can’t wait to see your reaction to the rest of this incredible album. BTW please research Roger Waters, he is the brain child of nearly all Pink Floyd and half the vocal genius on this song. He also wrote the whole album.

The folks below are all giving you good clues to the music. Once Dark Side came out they were thrown into the musical world of the music business touring worldwide and being taken advantage of. The album "Wish You Were Here" started the bands "hatred" of the music business. This album takes that idea feeling hate for the music business to a peak. Dogs represents the people who are pushing the band in order to fill their greedy bags with money from PF. You are right on about the song "record business individuals and their greed" plus your thoughts about who they were talking about. Cheers, K

Pink Floyd becomes a part of your being. I love to see when any age group or other demographic hear pretty much any Floyd song for the first time. You never get tired of hearing Floyd. I'm halfway to 67 and was a young teen when they released their greatest works, and it never gets old. You will cherish your discovery of Pink Floyd. You can hear in their earlier releases how they evolved to finally bless the world with Dark Side of the Moon through the previous release of Meddle which is where they found their unique sound and place in music.. I've been to four Floyd shows, and nothing compares to the seamless precision with each song becoming its own unique sight and sound extravaganza that encapsulates you. Tickets were always reasonably priced, given the incredible technology necessary. They loved their fans. And the tragic story of founding member Syd Barret that started their experimental music journey who was honored in a number of their compositions. I m fortunate to have been a 70's teen to experience probably the largest number of experimental music artists, marking a very historic period that spawned the collective musical genius of bands like Yes, Floyd, King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Frank Zappa, Hendrix, and the relationship between The Grateful Dead and their Deadhead fans, making a lifestyle out of following them on their tours. Welcome to the 70's.

The album is Waters' "treatise on mankind". It was also Pink Floyd's "answer" to punk rock, which was really making waves at the time. Sandwiched between "Wish You Were Here" & "The Wall", it's easy to hear just how "raw" this album is compared to their others. Waters said that in the album, the "dogs" were the "driven, go-getters", the "pigs" were those who merely "exist to consume"- the politicians, & the sheep were the easily led, to include the churched, to which point you hear the 23rd Psalm "butchered". I think this was their best (yes) album. Also the last album where the whole group did it "together", & also 1st tour to introduce a 5th member on stage: Snowy White on guitars, who played with Thin Lizzy & more.

This song creeps the hell out of my ears...............a friend of mine when we were listening to this discovered an audio illusion to this song......from what I can tell its the only I've ever heard in all recorded music I've ever listened to............here is where it happens.............go to 10.13 where the lingering voice of "dragged by "stone" and on that last word stone repeats the voice and blends into a synth......and then it fades.............then try to figure out where it goes away and you can no longer hear it..............then when it comes back in......................or does it?..........or doesn't it?...........and then if you don't pay attention you begin to hear and say "oh its there again....." but then if you focus on the music you don't hear it!!!!.....................and then stop listening for it ........and all of a sudden you hear it but then say the same thing and you discover it may or may not be there and it drives you nuts like you are hearing things in your mind or not................completely bizarre............

This is actually my favourite Floyd song and I’ve heard every one since I was a teenager and bought every album, I hammered floyd to death in my teens and 20s and then couldn’t listen to them for years, In some ways it’s that beautiful music and hard politics and life wisdom you feel you need at a young age when you’re discovering new music and it resonates with your energy and vigorous youth feeling all is new and you actually invest in new music to the point of exhaustion, well I did this with Floyd I listened to and bought every album, and well I’ll briefly mention dark side of the moon and being 19 and my magic mushrooms year nuff said lol ✌️ When in my 30s I became a father and was so busy in life that decade was a blur and early 40s. Now my kids are grown up I seem to have more time and look on Floyd even as a new thing again, it’s all coming back to me how this band was part of my very soul and to get back to the first point, I’m listening to them again and DOGS sure is my fave then and now, what goes around comes around 👍…..top tune 👌 This version also with just Roger waters and band from his “in the flesh’ tour is good I post the link dave Gilmore wasn’t there although it had his picture in the vid but at least it’s a good video version I watch often you may like it kzbin.info/www/bejne/laiwdZVtmcmGm7ssi=OQ5jbEUQ9SE5_QNR
