More like a petrol powered diesel locomotive. They also use a Diesel engine to drive a electic generator and then power the wheels with electric motors with the power from the diesel engine. This is basically the same thing but not on tracks.
@qwertz40352 жыл бұрын
Thats because you cant really have a gearbox or a clutch on a train because of the huge weight of a train. The clutch would just burn in like a Minute. So they use that method to basically have a 'electric clutch'

Interesting. If the IC engine and generator is packed together, doing work on the IC engine should be easy because the whole package can be taken out of the car easily since there is no mechanical connections to the car other than mounting and electrical cables.
@samthoma27192 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s a clever piece of design, That’s the whole idea though it’s much more efficient for a team to swap out and entire power train then strip one down to repair an issue

amazing piece of design, and it can use a lighter weight ICE because it can be optimized for a specific rpm with no regard for response or power bands.

it's a fantastic machine and thrown together in a remarkably short time... I know it might be loud in some areas of that tent, but someone should tell Olly that he really doesn't need to shout into the mic. and you could tell some of the guys in the tent were getting antsy about not being able to work on a part of the car because of where they were shooting. a sticky situation, because you wanna cover the whole car, but you don't wanna hold those guys up.

This is essentially the same architectural framework as a Chevy Volt or a BMW i3 w/rex. I wish more cars were available this way. The i3 rex is crap as it is underpowered for continuous use, but this setup allows engineers to absolutely optimize the gas engine for efficiency at one operating point. The BEV-only folks will nay-say the advantages of this platform over a BEV, but the performance cannot be disputed.
@mantan_rtw Жыл бұрын
I3 and Volt were very different. In i3 the 650cc scooter engine was only used to charge the battery. The car was BEV only for drive. Whereas the Volt was just a plug-in hybrid.

I think this is the best combination of both world between electric motor and ICE. Using ICE at much lower rpm only to charge the battery so you get much higher gas mileage, but still get instant torque (power) from the electric motor. I suppose for the commercial use we don't need DTM engine right? Maybe sub 1 liter ICE is enough. Imagine having "unlimited" range of electric motor, no need to stop to charge your battery, but instead you just have to fill your gas tank for like 1 galon for 40 miles of distance... Wow...
@mantan_rtw Жыл бұрын
