Just as we thought we were making progress after fitting the refurbished ram on the Kobleco, it goes from bad to worse !

We did the top cylinder on a 25 ton Kobelco with the help of another 13 toner and the roof of a transit van thought it was the seal but the seal was ok but it had a pin prick in the cast and started spraying oil onto the cab 😵💫 I definitely burst both bollocks that day

I love it when people talk shit about tools. Im a former VW tech and I had cheap stuff and expensive stuff. The best tool for the job is the one you have that works. As long as it gets it done and doesn't bugger anything up, its good.

These things happen. It's just thankful that no one was hurt or god forbid killed when the boom dropped.
@peteledwidge36318 ай бұрын
The pin prick hole was the start of the crack, that tiny little pressure release was keeping the whole ram from sploding! Tough break, and you're correct in saying Bahco tools are tough for the job. Done me proud for everyday abuse for some years now. Hope you have better luck on the next attempt. 👍

Huge forces arise in welding! Im thinking the fatigue might have already been there and weakened by those stresses, once it gave up just split like a banana. Great video my Lord. No one got hurt so all is well!!

Seen bars split like that after being machined into rams where I used to work. Determined to be an issue in the initial rolling of the bar. That sort of crack should have opened up when the ram was new. But my guess now would be that welding and preheat may be the culprit. Also seen 4150 leaded steel crack after heat treat due to poor distribution of the lead in the original bar.

That’s a bummer, could be just purely from the heat stress of the weld. Almost like the cylinder seem itself give way hence the straight opening. Second hand replacement might be the safest bet here unfortunately Kurt, be an interested repair though

Had this before, I think there would have been a crack in the cylinder from where the oil leak was before the repair. Then when the ram has been rewelded the hair line crack travels into the cylinder from the heat then when the ram gets put under pressure the crack opens and bang! Had this on a loading shovel ram had to get a new cylinder made. keep up the good work
@LordMuck8 ай бұрын
I'm thinking the same 😉

Id say your spot on. I had a similar situation with a ram leaking around the port inlet on the gland end, seemed to be a porous weld. Welded it up no problem, then it went again, welded it again! Several rather pi$$ed off goes later I noticed a hairline crack tracking way from the hole drilled in the cylinder for the port, my welding was simply chasing the crack along the cylinder! Luckily I noticed it before a similar catastrophe to yours Mucka. What appeared to be a porous weld on your cylinder was likely the start of the crack, the original weld and tension it was under was probably holding it together, once the end was cut off the tension was lost, the rest, as they say, is history…. Chin up Mucka, we all have bad days at the office.

Makes you think that pinhole was the start of a hairline crack no one saw.
@colingale8 ай бұрын
After any mjor welding on the case it will shrink, this is why they hone them after to take off that tiny amount. it's also possible that if the leak hole was not drilled to remove the crack itself and the heat from welding and cooling would cause the crack to extend within the metal. Maybe curtis from cutting edge engineering can shed more light.

Now that was a very clean straight split, so unfortunate for you. Even though there may have been a fault where it started, it still would have taken a lot of pressure for that to blow. And yes, when you talk about old equipment, it happens. Onward and upwards.

I used to work for a company who refurbed rams like this. The straightness of that split looks like a seam, however ram barrels should always be made from seamless tubeing so this should never happen. As that's the original barrel then really it's down on the manufacturers. In all fairness to the company refurbishing that ram, they could realistically have thought that no one would ever be stupid enough to use seamed tubing for a barrel.

Glad no one was hurt, that's the most important thing, obviously. I've definitely been there. I had an engine that was leaking, so I took it in for repair. Still leaks, took it back in, so then I said, You know what, f*ck it, I'll just keep an eye on the oil level. And I've managed to get 100 more hours out of it so far. Hopefully everything will go better this time with the ram. 👍

Quite a few cylinders I've seen split like that . the cylinder hasn't been properly heated for welding or an old crack has been opened up with taking the end off the cylinder be interested to see what the company offers as a solution any cylinder that ever cracked the customer paid for the new cylinder Tube and 50% off the repair its just unfortunate

@charleswelch2498 ай бұрын
Seen it several times in mining and construction. Sometimes the metal is week from heat cycles and just give up from a micro crack. Definitely going to be a complete new cylinder after the tube is replaced. Should outlast your machine when complete. At least it's a piece of mind that you will have a good cylinder in the main room location now.

Having been caught up in a spot with just a cheap argos special set of spanners, that the open end just spread out, and the ring end split open, because they must've been made from pot-metal about as strong as a warm chocolate bar, I can confirm that a good adjustable is a god-send. Thankfully the adjustable I ended up using on that job was a good old "King Dick" that's been around at least 10 years longer than myself, and still doesn't chew things up.
