I was lucky enough to see a Leyland TL11TH , turbo horizontal being dyno tested after a rebuild. As it was a bare engine the dyno spun it over to start it and it was checked for oil pressure and leaks After four minutes or so the guy running the test indicated he was going to power test the engine. The exhaust was the turbo outlet flange. When the throttle shaft was opened the beast awoke. With a very loud growl and a high pitched whoosh from the turbo, followed by a large cloud of diesel smoke the beast reached set governed speed. It was then pulled down by the dyno till she began to slow and the resulting figure noted. The engine was held at this point for about five minutes, just to prove she was fit for it. 243 horsepower she made and noise she made was epic. When he shut the engine down he said to me, usually as soon as you give it the beans everyone clears off. Frightened of the noise and smoke. On the odd occasion when something goes wrong and the engine runs away, this whole shed is like a ghost town, only me and the engine in the place.

Ball pein hammer for gaskets is the best! So good to see you do that. My Dad showed me that years ago and now I always do it that way. Over a century of wrenching can't be wrong!

Well done. Far too often we old timers forget that some folks don't know what we do automatically. I would say raffle it & let the winner decide what to do with it.

I'm one those guy's that knows nothing about the mechanics of engine's but love watching yt channels of people like yourself and others take things apart and put em together. And at the end of the vid I'm none the wiser. However in this vid I actually understood what you where explaining. It was like basic mechanics for dummies like me. Thanks.

Oh Sir Muck I know how you feel, when I pointed out to someone the oil leak in their engine and it needed to be topped up and then repaired. They said, why put oil in when it's coming out. I rest my case. Keep on Mucking.

As usual, a right & proper show. Loved it her in Mississippi, USA !!! 🇺🇸👍🎯 Tip o' the Day: On a mechanical fuel pump that leaks oil, the paper gasket can be replaced with a peace of used inner tube out of a lorry tyre.

I'm not half terrible as an amateur mechanic, rebuilt a '64 Land Rover (even the engine - whoa!!) on a new frame back in the 90s, do all the maintenance on my Jeep TJ, but yeah - I'm a telephone man, haha! One of the best parts of your channel (aside from the mutual sense of humor we seem to share despite being seperated by an ocean) are these tutorials. I'm always learning something, brother. Raffle it! Great video. You explained the pump really well. I have struggled trying to tell others how simple stuff works. When you’re turning wrenches at work and 3-4 other guys throwing in nonsense about what it might be. You know the guys who are like “have you tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?” This really illustrates it for any skill level. Keep up the good work!

I had the pin fall out of the governor linkage in fordson major injection pump and all hell broke loose. It was screaming…. I put it in top gear and dumped the clutch… and the engine didn’t even change note … it just ate the clutch plate… I couldn’t get to the air intake pipe either… so I turned off the fuel rap a ram away… as chunks of glowing exhaust pipe rained down everywhere…. But it survived…
@dorsetfendtfarmer7203 ай бұрын
Sounds like fun😂. I had one fill air cleaner bowl with diesel from the small return pipe it had rubbed through once it filled it the engine sucked in the fuel and as you say all hell broke loose she must have reached 10k plus RPM I pulled the stop and ran. But like you said she survived tuff old buggers ( super Majors)

Raffle it Muck, great explanation on Diesel's genius, it was so simple but so effective, and now we have a government trying to up the tax on diesels and petrols, what a wonderful place we are living in. 🇬🇧
@nautilus18723 ай бұрын
Very informative, I'm fairly confident around old diesels after decades of trying to make a living, one of the strange ones I had was a two tonne dumper hydraulic pump gasket failing and filling the engine oil with hydraulic oil, no drama just splitting logs off the feed and the revs just changed and slowly stopped the engine, filled the whole engine with hydraulic oil. No damage.

Great video. Iv had a few lift pumps fail but haven't had fuel getting into the sump from it. Had a MF 399 with the earlyer injector pump seal go and that filled the sump up with diesel, and the cost of the seal was pennies , also had glow plug leaking. Only way to stop runaway engine is to block the air intake. It's absaluteley insane some of the videos on KZbin on runaway engines and how long they go before seizing or goung bang.

All pretty fundamental stuff Mucker, but I still watched it and enjoyed it! I must have watched it for old times sake having previously been the farm fitter to a fleet of Major's, 5000's and 2 Muir Hill 101's. And for my sins 3 x DB1210 's! All had lift pumps so all had the potential to pick up on leaked diesel, but luckily they didnt! Ain't those little one way valves a b...r to replace in the lift pump though?

Almost forgot your explanations reminded me of a few things to add. I had one fuel leak from the injector pump to the crankcase through that seal on a 95 Ford L8000 with a 8.3 Cummins. The turbo that must have been good and didn't leak. I have a diesel that if it does a runaway the normal shutdown will stop it because it stops the air. It is an old John Deere 125 skid steer with an Isuzu diesel the only diesel I have seen like that.

I have always used the edge of a spanner to tap out gaskets, as that is way I was taught way back in the mid to late 1960's while at school. I don't think they teach such things in schools now.

I experienced a blowby fed runaway in a VW diesel Rabbit. Started at about 60 mph and there was no way to shut it down. Putting the car in neutral just let it rev even faster. We got it running again but it was very 'lumpy'.
