Shawn & Mel - This is easily considered one of the top 10 songs of all time along with "Bohemian Rhapsody" & "Stairway To Heaven" Do yourselves a favor & watch together the 1977 Live version. Don Henley you list first when Don Felder should be first. Felder wrote the music pre Eagles, it was on his demo tape to become a member. While with the eagles Walsh and Felder were tweaking it one day and Henley got in on writing lyrics, not sure if Frye was in on that part or not. Oh and Frey was on 12string acoustic on this one, just a technical thing being I play and sorta particular kind of guy.

@@2olvets443 In the original pressing of the album in '76 the credits are listed as Felder first, then Frye and then Henley. Henley wrote most of the lyrics, while Felder wrote all of the music, to include drums and bass. In total there were 8 guitar parts and for this performance we have 5 total (counting Felder's double-neck as 1 unit). So henceforth, being there are this many onstage, this is closest to the actual recording.

ABSOLUTELY, and he was also at Kent State when I was a student there and he was in originally in a local band on campus called THE MEASLES, then in the JAMES GANG. We used to walk to downtown Kent's bars frequented by all of us Kent State students, to hear the James Gang play. Jimmy Fox was their drummer and sometimes I would walk to class with him on certain days. We lived in the same off campus apartments for students who were in their senior year. Knew Joe Walsh casually then, but he wouldn't remember me now. Now he is also Ringo Starr's brother-in-law. He married Ringo's wife (Barbara Bach and former James Bond girl) sister. So this is the first ( and only) rock star that I can say "I knew him when" (before they became famous. JOE WALSH IS GREAT!!!!

Hotel California was released in 1976 on the album of the same name and was written by Don Felder, Don Henley and Glenn Frey. At the time of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, the band had completed their tour for Hell Freezes Over which started in 1994. During Hell Freezes Over, the lineup for the band was just like during The Long Run. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Don Felder Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit. For the Hall of Fame induction, the founding members Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner returned. Bernie left after the tour for the album One of These Nights and Randy left after the tour for the album Hotel California. Joe Walsh’s brick suit is a tribute to his days of wrecking hotels. (See Life’s Been Good spoken word edition for the backstory) Don Felder is the one playing the Gibson EDS-1275 and Don Henley is the drummer singing lead vocals For the ceremony, The Eagles performed Take it Easy and the one you watched, Hotel California. The meaning for Hotel California is that there’s a dark underside to the American Dream and how the dream can turn into the nightmare according to Don Henley but if you want to learn more about the writing of the song, you need to buy a 2-disc compilation album called The Very Best of The Eagles. With the album, there’s a booklet called Conversations With Don Henley and Glenn Frey where they were interviewed on the writing of each song on that album.

What's funny is there are 3 versions of this song, done at various stages of their lives. There's the 1977, Capital Centre version when they were still young (late 20s- early 30s). The acoustic version from Hell Freezes Over in 1994 (mid - late 40s)was reworked a bit and brings out the reggae-ish flavor of the song, this one in 1998 (early 50s). AND, they are currently touring, in 2021,in their 70s playing the full HC album and a lot more, plus still sounding great. By the way, it was always fun to see the late Glenn Frey singing along, whether he was the lead or not. If he liked the line he'd mouth the words right along.

The Eagles are the American version of The Beatles. Don Henley is John Lennon and Glenn Frey is Paul McCartney. Just like The Beatles they wrote together and separately most of the songs. Glenn was also the lead singer on some of their other great songs like "Lyin Eyes". Both Don and Glenn had big solo careers in the 80s. Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer" is one of the greatest songs of all time. Glenn not only had a lot of hit songs in the 80s("The Heat Is On"), but he became a fitness guru and acted in a few movies and tv shows. Including starring in a groundbreaking episode of Miami Vice. Glenn also supplied that episode with a song that became a mega hit "Smuggler's Blues". Which is a brilliant song! Don Henley and Glenn Frey(RIP) are icons.
