I've almost had this happen to me. I was splitting several miles from home, and I found the cotter pin on the ground when I was cleaning up the splitting debris. Luckily I noticed it before I towed it home. I think what happened to mine, was a piece of split wood fell just right to dislodge the cotter pin. Now I double check that all cotter pins are still in place after every splitting session, before I start towing it.
@WoodsTreeFarm3 ай бұрын
Wow, it seems so unlikely to get hit by a piece of wood, but I guess its possible. I certainly know to double check now. I think I'm going to add a secondary pin or chain of some sort as a failsafe.

I’ve always been hesitant to pull log splitters on the highway. Always felt that the tow ability was probably secondary in design criteria to the machine operation, probably as it should be. I’ve got a Wolff Ridge 17VS-C…great machine…actually an awesome machine, and it supposedly is highway towable, but there is a lot of mass, and a lot of it is quite high. I’d be nervous to tow it even at conservative highway speeds. Glad everyone is safe.

I agree that splitters aren't very towable,but that high end wolf ridge is plenty towable at 45 mph. I wonder who forgot to put the pin in,sounds like it wasn't him,but it's definitely his fault for not double checking, we've all made simple mistakes tho.

Are you sure that splitter was road rated for those speeds? My splitter and wood chipper are both rated to 20mph maximum on smooth ground. They aren’t designed to be transported on the road except strapped down on a trailer. Maybe yours is rated differently but even so low weight towing is difficult as it can be thrown around by hitting bumps at high speed.

Yes ,top speed recommended by Wolf Ridge is 45mph.

Phil, sorry that this happened to your splitter. As you said thankfully no one got hurt. Most of us think that this can’t happen. What would you suggest for a pin that might be safer for travel. Most of us don’t move our splitters more than around the yard. However there is an occasion we may help someone out. Hope you can salvage your splitter. I don’t think the beam would be bent or twisted. But will take sometime to get it going. Good Luck. That’s the same splitter you picked up on June 22 at the Midwest Frenzy right? Later
@WoodsTreeFarm4 ай бұрын
Yeah same splitter. Ive had it 2 years now. I think it needs a double pin or a pin for around the yard and a secondary bolt for going on the road.
@geogesterrett63914 ай бұрын
Tough to hear Phil, every firewood guys worst nightmare for most of us our splitter is the backbone of our business. From a business perspective I would recommend immediately increasing prices. Your backfill of supply will be little to none until you can get another splitter or rebuild this one. Demand will still be there even if you lose 1/4 customers due to price increase when you get back up and running you can maintain the higher prices and have a more profitable business. My opinion doesn’t mean it’s right or wrong just something to consider. Wishing you the best out there.

You are OK, that is the important thing. Did you have safety chains, or would they have helped? Did the coupler fail or did the pin on the extension fail? I don't have chains on mine, when I bought it I eased it home on back roads since it was close, otherwise I would have taken a trailer. Mine isn't designed to be towed, no lights or plate and it doesn't leave the property.

As stated above check with your auto insurance. I'm surprised that there are no safety chains required where that pin failed. At least for use while highway traveling. Lesson for all owners to put them on a trailer for moving them down the road. A tough blow for you but most importantly no one was hurt or worse. You'll bounce back I'm sure.

READ THIS PLEASE: 1st don't ASSUME you do not have insurance. Contact your agent and ask about your homeowners or renters or auto insurance policies. 2nd: I am very sorry for your loss, and I am also thankful nobody was injured! 3rd: take a breath step back an re-evaluate the situation. Perhaps use this moment, given your decision to move forward with the business "all-in" to decide: "in a perfect world what would I do regarding equipment?" I suspect you would decide to obtain a wood processor instead of a new splitter. I know you don't want debt, but a " little bit" can go a long way to making your plans a reality. Good luck sir. Again, I'm glad everyone is okay.
@OhRonaldo4 ай бұрын
You have a lot of friends in the business now, ask around quickly about any used machines, ask about borrowing, and investigate new. Get the processor that is best for the business OPERATIONALLY. The difference in payment is miniscule compared to the amount of time you are and will be committing to the business over the next 5-10 years of the life of the equipment. Plus you will be able to deduct that capital expense from your profits which will offset the interest at a minimum. The conveyor/stacker will help you to stop multiple handling of the wood, for example.
