One of the most striking scenes for me is the last one. The image of the people at home having never been to war, singing about glory and victory and getting on with life while the broken war veteran is shuffled off to a dark room out of sight and forgotten. Like it happens in every war.

That was actually a memory of his before he got shipped off to way. A Christmas party at the bakery he worked at and yes it was sung for the people currently overseas fighting in WWI but it's not like they were happily singing it. It was meant hoping they get home safely still out of touch with the horror they were living.

Something that may be ironic about this music video is that for ages Metallica resisted making music videos for MTV. But when they finally did they made this video which I can make an argument for being the best music video ever made. The video definitely adds a lot to the story that Metallica are telling with the song.

I love watching these reactions. I have been a metalhead long enough to tell you that when i first heard this song, i was labeled a devil worsipper and was told that my music was just noise. Nobody knew the depth of subject material covered by the metal genre. No, I'm not talking about the hair bands, or glam rock, I'm talking about real metal. The reason people request this song so much is because the video makes it impossible to dismiss the serious subject matters the metal genre covers.

I remember this was the first music video Metallica ever made, but it was their 4th album, go figure. I distinctively remember that this video and the movie scenes from JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN on this music video was the reason I saw that movie. It came out in 1970, was a commercial flop, but this video made it a cult classic, and on top of that, Metallica eventually bought the rights to the movie so they wouldn't have to pay royalty fees. It was such a great song off of my favorite Metallica album...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. It was so good that they got nominated for a Grammy in the BEST HARD ROCK/HEAVY METAL PERFORMANCE category and should have won......but they were screwed out of it and the Grammy went to JETHRO TULL....who has never been hard rock or metal!!!

Just to help better understand this song too, James Hetfield, the Singer and guitarist wrote this song after seeing the movie or reading the book it's based on of the same name (not sure which), Johnny Got His Gun and is a WW1 based anti-war drama. Even seen it myself, and yea is hard to watch. That's where the scenes to are from as well. Is it true though, no it is fiction, but yea did most likely happen to quite a few though in that war and even in WW2 as well.

@@christiangrunden3988 A lot more peaceful. I really hate that though lies and propaganda men are made to believe they are fighting for the good side. Ever wondered what those soldiers on the other side believed they were fighting for? Well, the same thing. In reality both sides are always fighting for the benefit of a few at the expense of many, including the soldiers themselves. It's be one thing to fight to defend your own country, but assuming you are from the west, it was the other side that was doing that. Western countries have been the aggressor in every single war they fought since WW2.

The scenes in this video are from the 1970's movie, "Johnny Got His Gun" and the associated book. Johnny was a soldier in World War One. He is caught in an explosion that leaves him with no arms, no legs, no face, no ears. He cannot speak, hear, or see - has no sense of time or where he is, and is fed through a tube and breathing through a respirator. I have always interpreted the cut scenes within the song as what is happening to Johnny in the real world. The moments of the song where Johnny is "thinking out loud" are his conscious mind, and James Hetfields voice is his subconscious mind. This was triggered - for me - by Johnny's thought, "I don't know if I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering?" From that point on, the music builds and builds, which - again, to me - signaled the growing conflict between the two sides of Johnny's mind as he dips further and further into insanity. By the time Kirk Hammett's guitar solo hits, (and hits hard), I've always pictured that as the final "battle" between Johnny's conscious and subconscious mind, with the final "S.O.S. Help me..." mantra at the conclusion signifying that Johnny's mind is the same as his body, reduced to "one" singular, autonomic thought. Nothing else of him remains from that point forward. Johnny has gone, and only the breathing corpse remains until he would die of old age. At the end, the crowd singing "Keep the Home Fires Burning" symbolizes how society went on and forgot about him, (and the veterans in general). If you listen to this song from that perspective, you will be bawling by the end.
