The canon explanation of why it takes so damn long is even more hilarious. The stock guns on the destroyer are *fucking muzzle loaded*. I'm not even making this shit up, you can upgrade them to breech loading from the Modules section. Some poor fucker gets out of the ship, into the space, and loads them from the muzzle like a musket.

The reason the 380 has such a big cooldown is so you don't run out of reinforcements too quickly since it is mostly designed to kill friendlies lol.

We were down to 0 reinforcements and we were on our last legs at the extraction point. Then some idiot dropped a 380 barrage. 2 died immediately and the last 2 were overrun. Our samples....

In all seriousness though, the cooldowns for the orbitals are nuts. That's why I don't use them except the laser or rail cannon. Slash the wait times in half, and they could compete with the eagle strikes.

The orbital gas strike is unironically really good for blitz missions, it will destroy automaton fabricators no problem and it has the shortest cooldown of any orbital strike. I’d say it competes with the Eagle in terms of sheer efficiency, although it’s useless for taking out heavy enemies.

It's space cooling, low particle count, so cooling takes just a bit, they're swapping out the coolant cell otherwise the guns will melt since they can't dissipate the heat into... well the air, since there is no air.

Cooldowns for orbitals is the reload time. Cooldowns for eagles is the pitstop back at the destroyer, or it needing time to regain altitude before coming in for another pass. Cooldowns for sentries, backpacks, & support weapons is the paperwork for the license to use it.

Also the lore reason I think we have cooldowns and a strict 20 reinforcements is budget reasons, when you burn out through all of the 20 helldivers it takes like 2 mins where the loud voice in your head will state after the cooldown that the reinforcement budget is approved so yeah, budgetary reasons, but treason will be punished no matter the budget cost.

There's tons of helldivers that want a 380 so the queue between getting to people is the cooldown. That's why the engineering doesn't have one. They are following up on other people's requests in the area. That's the conclusion when I saw the multiple helldivers on the monitors.
