I wanted to make a salve with plantain but didn't have enough, so I added comfrey and some chickweed; I mean, why not. Well it was awesome. My daughter (with special needs) broke her ankle, not dislocated but actually broke her ankle just as the pandemic started back in 2020. We were able to see a specialist who sent her home with a cushioned leg brace, pain pills and a two week follow up appointment. Well, with her autism that leg brace came off that evening. However, she let me put my salve on her ankle. I did it 3 or 4 times a day for those two weeks. I had little left after that. The doctor was amazed, shocked and surprised to see her ankle was almost healed. He said she accomplished a 3 month worth of healing in two weeks. To keep doing what I was doing because it was working. 😁I've got to tell ya, I was so proud of myself.😇

Kaylee, what you said about grabbing leaves really caught my attention. In the seventies when I was a lot younger, we had an older man disking up some ground for us to plant green fields for the deer on our hunting club in Choctaw county, AL. He plowed over a subterranean yellow jacket nest and he got stung. He gathered a leaf from 3 different plants and crushed them all together and rub on the wasp stings. I asked him to explain what he was doing the the sting with the leaves. He said any 3 leaves crushed together to a pulp and applied to any sting would stop the swelling, itching and turning red. He said it has to be leaves not grass or blades. I’ve used this many times in the almost 50 years I’ve known about it and it works. I’ve shared this with other beeks on YT and yet to see anyone try it. Do you use 3 leaves?

I am wondering if you have the latin name of the Balm of Gilead you used, here in australia what is known as "balm of gilead" is Cedronella canariensis, and is used for tea, which I think might be different from the one you used and called cottonwood. It gets confusing for us on the other side of the world as we have plants with the same name but are different species and have different uses.

I make an all purpose skin salve using plantain, comfrey, lavender- (all the plant oil I make, not essential oil)- olive oil, and yellow beeswax. It’s so amazing, and so far the only salve I have needed for all the bumps, scrapes, burns, and stings, etc my little ones suffer. I even recently started putting it on my face (due to adult/hormonal acne), and my face after TWO years of dealing with acne is healing up!! I don’t know why I didn’t think of using it on my face sooner. 😂 (Just fyi for anyone who may be reading this and wish to use a plantain salve on their face: Cleanse your skin FIRST, and while it is still wet, apply just a pea size amount of salve for the whole face. Massage it in gently and there you go!)

Comfrey & Plantain Salve Yield: 4-3/4 cups 4cups olive oil 1-1/4cup plantain leaves, dried 5 rounded Tbsp. comfrey leaves, dried 2 Tbsp Lavender, dried 3/4cup beeswax (pearls are much faster to melt!) 1. Simmer olive oil and herbs on low heat for 20 minutes. (Or, infuse in oil over time, as these ladies have done; the heat does not diminish the properties in the herbs, but allows them to leach into the oil, just as time does the same for the other method). 2. Strain herbs from oil and set oil aside in pot; dispose of herbs in compost or reuse for other purposes. 3. Use a double boiler to melt beeswax. 4. Pour beeswax into herbal oil and mix well. 5. Test consistency by dipping a spoon into the mixture and setting aside for 3-5minutes. If it needs to be harder, add more beeswax. If it needs to be softer, add more oil. 6. Pour into desired jars and cover with lids. Allow to cool completely, and store. Hope that helps! You can make whatever herbal blend you prefer. I believe in my last batch I actually upped the quantity of lavender; however, I didn’t write it down…. 😬… so, I’ll send my ‘original recipe.’ The whole process is very simple, and very quick! Highly rewarding!!

Here's a use for the other Plantain, the one that resembles a Banana, specifically the peel of the fruit. Dry it in the oven at 170D and make a powder out of it. Mix the powder 50/50 with Cayenne and keep it dry. When you get a problem splinter you cannot remove, one of those deep wooden splinters, make a poultice with the powder and Olive oil and put it on the wound and put a band aid on it. Leave it for three days. On day three the splinter will be on top for you to remove by flushing it with water. The Plantain causes the flesh to reject the splinter and the Cayenne keeps the wound from becoming infected. Tried and true, works every time no matter how deep the splinter.

My go-to salve is 2/3 cup calendula oil and 1/3 cup plantain oil with 1 oz natural beeswax I bought from a beekeeper. I use it on my face about once a week, on my hands several times a day all winter and always on (healed-over) cuts and burns; it's pretty miraculous. We broke ground last year to put our house on almost an acre of ground. This year I have noticed the plantain coming back. I have started harvesting both broad leaf and narrow leaf to start making my first batch of salve later this fall. My house is small, I don't have room for a lot of equipment so I'm just air drying the leaves. I do have about four calendula plants and have harvested some of the blooms to dry. I plan on using both for the salve.

Use comfy oil on that scar EVERY NIGHT! I've done this with my scar from injuring my foot, my tendon and soft tissue had some residual pain from the damage. 4 months later it washed on me I HAVE NO MORE PAIN! Admits in your salve would help temporarily.

I thought it was Comfrey that heals the top too rapidly. Never has Calendula do that. Have I missed something?

We were always taught to avoid using Calendula on deep tissue/puncture wounds as it can promote quicker tissue healing. Superficial uses are great! I am looking at a few studies of patients who have decubitus ulcers and finding that it is helpful in bringing oxygenated blood to help promote healing!

I haven’t heard it of calendula until now, but I have read of comfrey & heard from a dear friend and naturopathic doctor that has since passed that comfrey must always be paired with an antibacterial/antiviral/antiseptic, if used on deeper wounds, as it can heal a wound so quickly that any infection/bacteria, etc in the wound can get closed up with the skin. I usually pair comfrey with lavender for that reason, but I also tend to not use comfrey on a wound until it is already showing some healing. 😊 (Not that we’ve experienced many instances of deep wounds, thank God! But we’ve had two instances- once from an accident with a t-post pounder and once from a hot iron- in which I’ve waited to apply comfrey.)

Honey Mullein (tea) Elecampane (tincture) Holy basil (tea) Garlic (You can peel and mash them into honey. For the future, look into making a ferment of them in honey.)
