This is my personal opinion, I think natural black hair in different styles looks way more better than hair straighten up with relaxers. If you want a straight hair is better to use a wig, but relaxers just damages the hair permanently. Black hair is unique and it is super beautiful and not all races have that type of hair, if you have it, show it, don't hide it.

Dick Buffay Black women CAN wear their hair just the way it is, but many choose not to because there's so much pressure from white people and the white media to straighten it. It's going to take more BW braving the act of wearing their natural hair in its natural state for the tide to change. CheezInspector I'm from Europe and over here white people are always complimented me with my/our natural hair. I don't feel like they are judging me/us by wearing a weave or braids because here (the Netherlands) they like different looks. I think that it's our own lack of convidence and our own judgement against each other waht leads to pointless discussions like these (no disrespect)/ We have to focus on other things. My opinion.

kallahari Happy you don't feel judged. In the US there are very few images in the media of black people w/natural hair and you have a lot of whites not allowing it in the workplace. You have some whites wearing afro wigs on Halloween. You may want to focus on other things, but there are women burning their infants' scalps over this and family $$ being thrown at ugly weaves that look 100% self-hating. We have the capacity to focus on MANY things & don't have to just choose one.

I hear it every single day from my white relatives, how natural hair is 'unprofessional' but then they mock black women who have weaves? White people will never be accepting, coming from a white person, trust me when I say that you're right, we can't just sit around and wait for white people to become more open minded.

I'm white/Asian & when I was in sixth grade I gotta perm to make my hair really curly because I was so envious of the African American girls in my class who had that loose afro/curly twisty hairstyle, (sorry I'm not sure what it's called.) But, their hair had so much volume & mine just laid flat -_- I also remember asking my mom to put those little ball things in my hair lol. I think black people have amazing natural hair. I honestly think a nicely maintained afro is way more appealing than a greasy looking, burned relaxer. No offense.

Thanks for this video! I think everyone should do what they want with their hair, but that relaxers should not be placed in a child's hair. That way, they will know their hair and when they are of an age to make the decision, then they can. Most of us ladies where told so many negative things about our hair texture as a child that we never want to even try going natural. I will be a year natural the end of this month at the age of 35. I wish I had given up the relaxers years ago, but again to each her own. Those who choose to still do it by all means do it, but know the background behind it and what it does to your scalp and hair. Our hair is so beautiful because no two heads are exactly alike. I love seeing natural sisters rock and own their hair and not care what anyone thinks. It's a truly beautiful sight. Blessings!

It took me a while to learn how to manage my natural hair I looked up things I looked up oil I looked up oils from other cultures I was told that the Indian culture we don't have the same hair so why would I use oils for my hair and natural oils and things that the east Indian women use and come to find out that's what they used in Africa before we were bought here while the ancestors were brought here they use a lot of oils that use natural herbs it has nothing to do with being Indian East Indian West Indian whatever Indian it is they naturally used herbs and oils on their hair and they skin they didn't use chemicals and that's the most important thing to find the right oil for your hair it may not be coconut oil and maybe other oil just so many oils out there there's so much on the internet that you can read and some of them are very inexpensive taking care of our here it's no different than people with straight hair it will grow if you take care of it it will grow it will grow with you Panther it you don't have to do it every day but make sure that your oil your edges or whatever you put in it to make it stay do not go and have your head tightly braided with Falls hair that falls hair pull your hair and your edges out and acts as a foreign agent in your scalp and wants to get away and from your natural hair do what's right go natural if that's what you want to do I mean people who have perms is fine people who died a hair with chemicals it's fine but find the right route for you right route for you and healthy hair

Dear Mr. George: I´ve just started on my natural hair journey and am transitioning by cutting my hair a little at a time. I live in Southern Europe and women here always ask me if I know how to braid as they find braids extremely beautiful and easy to maintain. Quite a number of children here have cornrows especially in the summer. Many women here have very thick , ´dramatic´, big heads of black, curly or kinky hair and wear it out in all its big glory. I have found that it is much easier for me to receive acceptance of my hair due to the positive attitudes of people around me. I wish I had gone natural years ago as I´m looking forward to finally having a head of healthy hair as opposed to the thin hair that often accompanies having permed it for so long! Thank you very much for your documentary.....If you could stomach it, perhaps you might tackle the subject of those women (and a few men) who take medication to dramatically lighten their skin ....Best wishes and may you have continued success...

It's weird that started from young I hated when my mum permed my hair. It burnt my head sides and made me insecure cod my forehead got bigger and because my mum was mixed her hair was thin so I kind of got that genes in my hair but thickness to it. When I came to England I was so fascinated by white hair. But one day I saw a beautiful girl with big hair who became my best friend. Her hair was corse and long all the way to her shoulders. I admired her for her hair later on she permed it when we went secondary school I didn't go same secondary school as her but I still visited her and saw how her hair fell off. It proper upset me because she didn't love her hair and now she regretted it. I started to get bored one day with my permed and damage hair and that's when I decided to go natural I got so fed up of what everyone saw as beauty. I started to think the way I see beauty is much more important than what others see it. And tbh even though my mum was mixed for some reason I just wanted my hair to be more corse and fuller but I still love my natural hair xxx it's so nice to be ur own definition of beauty x

I honestly don't know a single white female who has ever had a problem with black females natural looks, yet we always get thrown under the bus as if we are constantly telling black people they should look like us, I have always loved black hair and features and different range of skin tones, the only people I ever hear tell black women to change how they look in any way, is other black people. I can't speak for the job market, but I'll be opening my own business soon and if i had two black girls applying for a job with equal credentials and equal personalities, but one wore weave, fake nails, lots of makeup etc. to try to look like a star and the other had her natural hair sans all the fake stuff, guess who I'd be more likely to hire? When I see a black woman wearing her natural hair with her head held high and a smile on her face, it's just screams confidence and makes you seem much more approachable than if you were covered in all of that extra stuff that honestly seems like armor.

I haven't come across white women who hate natural hair, either. I mainly come across ones who speak illy of weaves and wigs, but that's it. But just because I haven't come across them doesn't mean they don't exist. :o Society tells black women these things, and it's a pretty sad reality, but it's up to black women to stand out and break free of the societal norm. Btw, I love your comment about natural women being more approachable. I never thought about it in the way you put it and I like that a lot. :)

Ariel Grooms I know this is old but I wanted to respond. As a Black female, I have always been complimented by white women on my hair (relaxed and especially now that I'm natural). However, I've had some negative comments from white men about my hair. Saying it was unprofessional, too big, etc. Also, a lot of black men idolize and fetish over white women and "running their hands through their long hair". That's where a lot of black women's hair insecurities lie.

Hair relaxers are poisonous and can cause cancer. I stopped relaxing along time ago when I suffered severe burns to the back of my head that left scar tissue.

I do embrace my natural hair,and i know that many blk women do that also. But in our culture i think we always payed more attention on our outside than on our inside.We didn't learn to talk but we did learn how to express our selv. We like to be different, we like to experience with clothes, jewelry, shoes and yeah we also like to be creative with our hair style. I don't think we have to over think this too much. There is still so much diversity amongst us blk women. Afro, coarse, permed, curls, bald, braids. We just like trends! We need to stop dictating our blk people what they should do with their outside and get more uplifting and supportive about each other consern the real community problems that we have.Single teenage moms. Fathers who don't care about their kids. Poverty, school dropouts, no education, no jobs,no future. These are the issues what we have to discuss. Let everyone desides for themselve how they want to wear their hair.It's really none of anybody's business.

I don't care for straight textured hair. Straighten hair can barely hold styles together for too long unless it's very pinned up. Thick/kinky hair can hold styles up for a while & look the same if wrapped up correctly throughout sleep time. My mother started perming my hair at 4 or 5yrs old which is way too young.. She also was rough on my head during hair combing & grooming which left permanent scalp damage. I continued on with what I thought was of culture to us African/descendants,I never knew what my true hair texture looked like until 2014 when I decide to leave weaves hair extensions & perms alone. I only press my hair once or twice a year during holidays when needing a trim. I have thick curly coily hair.. Which has every kind of curl pattern there is.. I love my natural hair.. I know I have good beautiful hair because I take care of it,it's healthy & strong. I got hair styles in ways that can't be adopted easily in the straight haired world. My uniqueness my natural beauty.

I love this informative hair video document. I have been wearing locs for many years now, because of damage from relaxers, because back in the day most professional black women really could not wear their hair in braids, or natural, well anyway I made up my mind to lock my hair, and it was not received well from my family, some friends. They would say, you have beautiful hair, why you fuck it up putting that shit in your hair, and some family members would say, if we were going to an event or something, they say what are you going to do with your hair; I would say I don't know probably curl it. Well over the years, every one love my locs now, but I would get most compliments from white folks, they would just look at my hair, and say how beautiful it was, so one must have confidence, and love oneself, to wear natural styles; I was afraid at first, but my hair was literally falling out, therefore I had to save my hair, and I love it. Anyone can be relaxed and have hair going in the same direction. All straight. No one standing out. Only YOU can have hair EXACTLY like YOU!!! Not even your parents have your exact same hair as you are a mixture of the two. I love that! I hated being stuck in a box (box perm that is). Where my hair was straight and if one section stuck out even a little bit, it didn't look right. Now? I have these beautiful curls that stick out all over the place and it looks GREAT that way!!! I love it! I don't have to look in a mirror all day like "OMG is it sticking out?!". Nope! Now, my hair is mine and mine alone. It'll never go out of style because I'm the only one with it and I say it is IN!

Nice documentary. Am European so my view of black people is a bit different. And damn didn't have an idea so many do relaxing in the states ._. natural black hair has a mistique to it. Fine it's not the same but there is beauty in that, it has that proud easygoing stoic feel to it. Really why would so many people go through all that just to straighten some locks. Also one question, do all black people have this spiraly sort of natural hair? I have a black friend with a long wavy hair, and I swear I have never seen her even for a tiny moment with the spiraly sort and she does not seem the sort that would be bothered by it. Honestly am a bit too afraid to ask is thats her real hair. PS: One gripe, when you have mono please do copy the mono to both left and right. Always makes me twitch lightly when only half my headphone works during videos (and probably not the only one).

Hello, Axel, and thanks for your comment. To answer your question, yes, hair types do vary among black women, although I am not an expert on all of the patterns that exist. I will say that here in the States, when black women wear their hair naturally, you'll see a variety of different hairstyles and textures. In regard to your last comment, I agree with you. When I was presenting this documentary in my film class, I immediately noticed the audio issues. Your suggestion for copying the mono to both the left and right channels is definitely something I will do for my next video, whenever that may be.

Axel Alexson not all black folks have the same texture of hair , my cousin is black and has straight hair naturally, so does my great grandmother. basically most black folks have afro textured hair or 4 type hair, but there are some black folks that have wavy and straight hair and there are some black folks hair that are in the middle. for example my hair can't form an afro I would have to use product to get it to stand up, my hair is not straight but it naturally will fall down straight on my back when dry. when wet it is curly . when I was a kid I had wavy hair, but my hair texture changed at age 13 . but not all black folks have the same texture . I relax because I wanted super straight hair and it last longer plus I didn't take the time to learn about my hair

I'm shocked to keep hearing and reading these documentaries of how "Black Women" used perms because it was more acceptable and that they idolized the "European" look. Let's start using the word "Some" in front of black women when it comes to hair. Some of us black women idolized our own natural hair and our mother and grandmother's natural hair who may not have had the same hair type as other black women. If my mother's hair was wavy, silky and long and mine is soft curly and long, I always wanted my hair to look like my mothers hair. I had my mother and grandmother's long length but it was curly. I have two daughters who both have two different hair types and both inherited the long waist length never mentions hair and what is acceptable. We need to realize that black women are beautiful no matter what choice they make about their hair. I remember when people got Jheri Curls. There was always someone with a better looking one. .

My mother refuses to accept that naturally kinky hair is beautiful. We have "3b/3c" hair but she thinks it's all ugly unless it is straight. She thinks we are just lazy but I have seen these women work so hard on their hair and reap amazing benefits. The truth is, once you take care of your hair and it is still "nappy", that's when you start to look deep within YOURSELF and decide, "I'm beautiful. I'm unique. I'm blessed." I learned it at 16 but older generations are stuck in their ways. I was 7 and much like the first girl, my mother's mother permed my hair. My grandmother had hair so long she could pick it up and wash it in a tub like clothing when she was younger and so did her sisters. But they thought having thick, long hair was bad. So they cut it, thinned it, and relaxed it. Now, after medication making it all worse, they're balding. For me, when I was younger I would have a love/hate relationship with relaxers. I loved the initial benefit of the straight hair at first but then I grew to dislike it. I saw pictures of my hair before and it was about waist length and curly. I asked my mother if it was possible to have it back but she told me there was nothing I could do. I was so sad about it, I would cry because I was stuck with a decision I never remembered making. Funny thing is, my mother always wanted me to curl my hair because I look better with curly hair (duh, I was born with it) but she's a firm believer in relaxers being the best and only solution. She won't even accept texturizers! One day, my mother bought Dark & Lovely's Au Naturale soufflé and finger curled my hair. We all loved the results so I just stopped relaxing to do that. I just refused to relax for a long time. I didn't know anything about transitioning and stuff but any time doing my hair became hard, my parents would say "you know we have a relaxer in the kitchen, right?" Or "that's why you need a relaxer!" But I still refused. I refused for about 9 months and one day I stumbled upon some information on what transitioned hair was and how to go natural. At first I was afraid to cut it. But then I realized how bad the damage was. I had brushes full of breakage hair, I had matted parts, split ends, dry hair. All because I never took care of it. Simply applied grease and stuff to make it look okay for a day. I would even look down and there would be strands that looked like my hair was long but when I pulled at them, they broke right off! So, the very next day, I cut it all and went natural. Never looked back! I feel so much more confident and liberated! Don't get me wrong, I don't pretend to know how women with say 4c hair and dark skin feel as we all have our own problems in life we must deal with. For me, I'm multiracial but I experienced the damage of relaxers and the self hate from my own family. My mother has had some very odd ideas on how natural hair works. In her mind, we all make everything up and she is the only one with "sense". She thinks "kinky" is a kinder word for "nappy", that relaxers don't damage hair at all, that at first in order to see curls, I would have to constantly manipulate my hair (she didn't think my hair would revert back to it's natural state), that kinky hair isn't curly, that my hair is only curly now because it is short and it'll go right back to the transitioned state (straight) when I grow it out, that transitioned hair is natural hair because she says so, etc. She doesn't allow me to tell her any facts, she just turns it into "someone is always tryin to tell me how to live my life!!!!!" And ignores everything I say. The only thing I can do now is to grow it out and prove her wrong. Although by then, she will deny her claims and make something else up.

Hello I enjoyed this documentary so much thank you. It brought tears to my eyes but tears of joy. I wished I had never gotten a relaxer. I really didn't need one when I look back. I was in my teens when I got one because everyone around me was doing this. I regret this you live and learn. I'm now in my mid forties and I have been natural for 2 years and my hair Is long I take very good care of it. I would also say it has built my self confidence, self love, and I feel so proud words can't explain. I wished i would of did this sooner.
