This song was Herbie going full send with 80's electronic instruments. "Rokit" was such a huge hit. It was EVERYWHERE. It's wild to hear what jazz masters can do when they step outside musically.

This video was the coolest thing in the world to a 7-year-old in 83

I'm a Herbie Hancock fan and I forgot how good this was. The keyboard playing is pure Modern Jazz; syncopated, arrhythmic, especially the solo.

Fun song and reaction. I was in the home stereo equipment business when this album/song was released. You can bet we used this to demo speakers and amplifiers in the store. This sounded great, even on a mediocre sound system.

This was a huge hit. I was about 16 when it came out. The video was made by Godley & Crème, who released a series of really great art rock albums in the 80’s. Try “Sandwiches Of You” from their excellent album “L.”

Regarding the devices we see in the video. To my knowledge - I didn't research this - Most of these devices were test for wear and tear of clothes or were to some degree inspired by these machines. And yeah, both the music and the videos were quite popular then. At least here in Germany. Herbie Hancock is extremely versatile. Just compare Watermelon man from his debut album with the one from headhunter 11 years later.
