As bad and as sad as it is... The narrative in these videos is very biased. Strong leanings towards blaming and less open discussions on what could be the causes. Like the Oakland folks were saying: There are myriads of issues/problems that can lead someone to living on the streets. However, continued profit greed will continue to push cost of living beyond single minimum wages.
@Florida46
@Florida46 2 жыл бұрын
@@seikojin Private companies should be ashamed of themselves. Very few of them pay their employees a living wage. I know a woman who works FT as a peer specialist for 1 of the 35 FACT teams in Florida. Each FACT team serves at least 100 clients with mental illness. Most clients live in some kind of supportive housing and some like myself live independently in our own apartments. I fully admit the fact that a peer specialist is the lowest level position on any FACT team. Even so... ANYBODY who works professionally with those who have mental illness should be making a hell of a lot more than $13 an hour. She lives on her own. Without somebody living with her to balance out the overall income I have no idea how in the world she survives financially. I work for an employee owned grocery chain operation that offers buying company stocks and 401K plans. I currently make $1.45 more an hour then she does. That's not fair and it proves how backwards most privately owned companies really are.

I was homeless at 61. Ran out of savings, unemployment, couldn't find work. I thought I would die, never thought it'd ever to me. But I survived, learned where thr free meals were, showers, Healthcare, shelters. I stayed 3 months at Salvation Army, 6 months at Catholic Charities, they kept me fed, housed, clothed until I finally landed a job out of state, saved some money, eventually retired on SS. I haven't been homeless 10 years now. I'm very grateful to Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and others that help us that when we need it. Sincere Thanks

I have lived in Seattle for 26 yrs and m appalled at how much the city has deteriorated and am ready to leave. I recognized most of the areas that you had shown. While the drugs and homelessness are part of the reason for the high rate of homelessness the high tech industry is also part of problem. When I moved here in the late 90s Seattle was very affordable. I bought my first house for $90,000. The house payment was $620 a month. The only high tech employer then was Microsoft. As the high tech industry moved from California to Seattle high prices increased as the tech workers were making 2 or 3 times more what the average Seattleite was making and could by much more expensive property. Then people started buying houses to rent and increased the rent but the tech workers could easily afford it. Then the developers got greedy and tore down older buildings where tenants had cheap rent and replaced them with luxury apartments and condos. So to sum it up much of homelessness is a result of greed.

I am disabled and on SSI. I worked for years while raising my children and long after they were on their own. Then my parents required 24 hr. care so I left my career to care for them unpaid. Those years I will never regret but during that time I didn't pay in to Social Security so when I became disabled I didn't have enough work credits and so I couldn't qualify for disability and was granted SSI. In Oregon the max payment is $794.00 a month. There is absolutely no apartment I can afford on that. Even a mobile home space in the Salem area is 700 a month. So I have no choice but to live in my 5th wheel on a friends property. So many of the SSI recipients are homeless because there is not enough low income housing.. It takes years on waiting lists to get into the small amount of low income housing there is presently. Not all of us are drug addicts and criminals. Im a 50 year old grandma who has never even had a parking ticket. You want to fix a lot of the problem...either raise SSI benefits to the poverty line or create more affordable housing. Just sayin.

A lot of times though, for lower and middle class people, the house they have is because they work, and work hard. They get up early in the morning to go serve the public, and deal with the stress you have to deal with to be for example an ED nurse (which is what I am). Which is extreme, and most people could not handle it, I know from experience. It’s not easy to live on the street, but it’s also not easy to keep working hard, an a break Neck pace sometimes. You get out of what you put into life. That’s the whole purpose of America, capitalism, the freedom to make the most out of your life, or not if you wish.

My friend and I recently took Amtrak to Seattle. Before we even arrived at the station we saw tents and people sleeping on the street. We walked from the station across the city to get our rental. It was eye opening. There were multiple homeless people emptying full trash cans and going through the trash, creating a huge mess on the sidewalk. There were people laid out on the side walk. One guy was going to town on himself. This was around noon. I can’t imagine children seeing this and we did see children. On our way out we saw a small tent city and I saw 2 guys doing a drug deal in broad daylight. This was adjacent to a beautiful tree-lined residential street. The residents act like it’s not happening. And the worst of it all was the perpetual smell of urine.

Then a new crop, or encampment, starts growing elsewhere and the cycle repeats. The homeless issue has several root causes so one size solution cannot fit all. The homeless need to be vetted into to groups such as severe mental illness, drug addiction, disability/elderly, able to work but can't afford current housing prices. Then each group has to have it's tailor made solution. Failing that, the problem will keep getting worse and can potentially affect the quality of life off all urbanites (i.e. crime, filth, property prices, etc). It's not only about compassion. As a side note, I live on a large island in a developing Asian country. There is literally nobody living on the streets. I see very very few mentally ill people wandering the streets. In Manila, despite it massive population, the homeless issue is nowhere near that of cities such as Seattle.

The city is very concerned about protecting the rights of the homeless but this is coming at the expense of the rights of non-homeless citizens. The people who bought homes next to (or near to) a park so their kids would have a place to play are now faced with not only not being able to use the park but actually forced to avoid the park for safety reasons. I think it is good to help those in need but the rights of the citizens also need to be protected, and providing free drugs and not prosecuting crimes is addressing the symptoms rather than the cause of the problems. The little house idea is something I had not thought about as a solution and I do see it as a good option, particularly for the elderly. One of the downsides of providing "free" things is that the recipients become dependent on free stuff and it can be a used a form of control. This may be why the city shut down the voluntary agency mentioned in the video since this takes away control from the city. The city is not going to be able to build enough of the tiny homes to get rid of homelessness - they are going to have to build high-rise buildings with lots of tiny rooms. It probably wouldn't hurt to put a police substation on the ground floor of one of the buildings in the complex. A Republican mayor still has to work with the leftist city council to get anything done, so I am not hopeful that things will change. My solution to the problem would be to build vertical high rises with hundreds of small units each, then notify each person camping in a park or living in a camper that they must immediately move to a legal residence, including the high rises or one of the small house locations. If they don't, arrest them and interview them to find out why they are homeless. If they are an addict, put them in a controlled medical facility and help them through withdrawal so that when they leave they are no longer an addict. Try to address the root cause of their homelessness. Tough love rather than enabling destructive behavior.

Oh yes!! That would really be a great plan. That would make it clearly illegal to be poor/homeless. Absolutely 💯% I support that all the way!! Oh! I know,after every homeless person has been rounded up and forced into a tiny house village or a high rise tiny room building....we can them tell them to get on the fucking train...yeah tell them it's all going to be ok...get on the fucking train and off to Auschwitz you go...just get on the fucking train. @@thisisfuckedoff5107 Being poor is not against the law. Seattle is working to help those too poor by providing the small houses. What is illegal is where they are camping. As of right now the authorities have chosen to ignore this and the public is paying the price, which is why a heavily Democratic city now has a Repuican mayor. It is interesting and disturbing that you compare enforcing simple laws to putting people on trains and taking them to extermination camps. You view the very acts taken by the city to help the poor as a tool against the poor.

I love your videos. They are so eye-opening. I'm amazed. You said you think the problem is drugs and you're probably right, but I think there is more to it than just the drugs. Drugs are usually a symptom of pain, despair, and poverty, which obviously those who sleep in tents on the sidewalk are probably experiencing... but I think some of those tent folks (might not be drug addicts) and they just gave a middle finger to the landlords who want them to work 40 hours per week to pay rent and ride the bus and eat ramen noodles. They said, "I can eat ramen noodles without working 40 hours per week." It's economical, not just drugs.

The needle exchange program actually was an incredible project started by a citizen and ex-drug addict. It was a 1 for 1 exchange started by a kind heart who understood addiction and did everything he could to help people get clean. It was commandeered by the city and turned into a money grab, bring a needle and get as many as you need. The exchanges getting money for clean needles they hand out.(incentivizing them to hand out needles by the hundreds) Then the original was ordered to shut down.

Olympia is the same… What many people watching don’t realize (those who don’t live in Seattle and surrounding areas) is the majority of the people living in the camps are not having a bad year or out of luck. There are many issues within the camps including theft, violence, drugs, rape, arson, etc. It seems as many of the transients are seriously disturbed and mentally unstable. These folks walk around Olympia throwing trash in the streets, cutting off cars in busy traffic with their Target shopping carts full of trash, starting propane tanks on fire, throwing glass bottles at transit buses, stealing carts of clothing from Walmart and Fred Meyer, walking around with out pants or underwear, urinating/pooping in their pants…the list goes on. Set a sunset curfew on that little park perhaps with the addition of some nice taller wrought iron railings all around it, and a few victorian entrance gates around it to match. Install a few cameras broadcasting to passing cop cars on a password protected wifi signal so they can see on their car dash at a glance there is no one overnighting there. Encourage all those in the surrounding buildings to come out and sit to eat their lunch there during their workdays. Social responsibilty is for everyone in places that central to the heart of the city and crucial for the quality of life for all it's citizens.

In Canada, Vancouver, and all of Vancouver Island, the situation is much the same. And I agree with you - drugs and mental illness have exploded the homelessness situation everywhere. Mental illness begets drug use, and vice versa. But also, it's the fact that people cannot afford rent anymore - anywhere. About those RVs, they are probably 'the working poor' - still have a job, but living on the edge because rents are out of reach.

The first time I visited Seattle in the late 90s. I can't say homelessness looked any more pervasive there than other similarly sized cities at the time. But those I did see looked uniquely more strung-out. At the time, I attributed this to the burn-outs from the tail-end of the grunge music scene (kind of like the long, dirty tail of SF's Summer of Love), but in retrospect, maybe there was a deeper problem slowly brewing.

Myles alcohol is the main drug society uses and it causes 90 percent of the damage caused by drugs. Seattle has always has a big problem with it. I think they used to just push it into poor parts of the cities. Vancouver BC had done something like that, pushing the homeless and drug addicted, which includes the hordes of alcoholics into the Hastings and Main area, know locally as Wastings and Pain. One observer noted the high level of drug dealing and low level of violence, relatively low anyway, due to the fact that the only gang in the area is the Vancouver B.C police department.

I transitioned from homelessness to housed because of a tiny village.(and the "Obama" phone) It's likely Id be dead save for the free tent, food, clothing, showers and laundry Seattle provides. The thing is, giving a drowning man a life vest isn't enough. There's sharks in the water and shore is miles away. You've gotta get him into the boat. Unfortunately he's exhausted from treading water and isn't going to be much help. So you have a choice. The homeless do not. Think you could go from stinky homelessness to self supporting? I double-dog dare ya. Try it for a week. Leave your phone and your wallet and your keys and your spiced latte and wander the city looking for a free tent, a waterproof sleeping bag and somewhere to poop. I DARE YOU. Then, once you've secured all the NECESSITIES go find a job. With no address.

Society has cast you out and gives zero fks if you die. At best you're a drain on resources. I never had anyone who believed in me so I believed in myself. I made a plan and took small steps to move in that direction every day. Most homeless folks are in survival mode, where all that matters is the immediate need. The tiny villages are a life raft with no oars. They will keep you alive so you cling to them for dear life but there's no plan in place to get to shore. The homeless situation in Seattle is disgusting.I worked in Seattle for years,and it all stems from the fact the city government is doing everything they can to take away the felt consequences of being a drug addict. They give them people Hundreds of bucks a month in food stamps,which very often go to drugs they allow them to get away with breaking the law especially assaulting other citizens for no legitimate reason, just as a matter of impulse, yet, not see any jail time for it. The homeless situation in Seattle is the direct result of decades of the City Government subsidizing Insanity at the expense of people who work and are productive and obey the law. Wouldn't it be awesome if Seattle would just wake up one day and decide that those would be the people who would be receiving the most services and protection of the law, rather than, people who choose to do nothing other than take drugs, live in the streets assault fellow citizens and defecate everywhere they choose to????

Tell me where people use foodstamps to get drugs? I'd very much so doubt that actually goes on alot. Yet, where it did take place was only due to the conditions that place constantly goes through and it wasn't in washington state, i'll tell you that! I can't find nobody that does that but then again I am not going around looking. The people I knew either were making up that money as prostitutes or they earned it through doing chores at a shelter and there are not many shelters that offer money for doing chores. The unfortunate thing is the person that probably got that set up at the shelter didn't have that in mind. Rather, have them use it as bus fare, maybe even clothes. And as far as drugs go I wouldn't find that much of an issue as long as they are the legal ones, but i'm telling you first hand that at least one person I knew in that housing environment was clearly buying meth. It was a shame to see it happen right in front of me

@@JerettFranklin it's not enigmatic at all, it's very clearly understood among people that use drugs, and don't use drugs, where I'm from. Their food" stamps" comes on EBT and what they do is they give the card with it with a pin, loan it out to the person they're buying drugs from they go usually use it to buy $50 worth of groceries in exchange for the $20 worth of drugs they're selling the person who's been issued the EBT or Food Stamp Card which is what a lot of people refer to it up here as. Nobody uses actual food stamps anymore the welfare system is used this type of card with a pin number to give to people and lift food stamps designed to replace the same problem, which is, people's giving $50 with the food stamps to a drug dealer in exchange for 20 or $25 with the drugs. 60% of the people in that were offered housing his among the homeless in western Washington said no. The reason they said no was because it required that they not use drugs or be drunk in whatever housing they're given. 6 years ago up in Seattle there was this homeless woman who lived in a homeless camp with her two sons one of them's 19 the other was 16 she was selling black tar heroin and when her son went to collect from another customer within the camp and the man didn't have the money her son shot him dead with a 44 magnum which wasn't legal for him to him but a lot of times he's homeless people will break into houses during the daytime when people at work steal everything in there that they can worth a value and pawn it for drugs or in case of a firearm hold on to it.

The Housing First program in Finland has been a success in drastically reducing homelessness and the Finnish gov’t says it’s on track to end homelessness by 2027. I’m proud that Seattle is opting for the Housing First approach to combat astronomical housing prices. With a safe, comfortable community for many former homeless, many of the other issues (drugs, mental illness, etc.) can be addressed and dealt with systematically for each community member. If many other areas in the U.S. did this, homelessness would be drastically reduced, for the betterment of all. Also, this guy you have on is nuts. Columbus's program might have been successful initially (20 years ago) but I checked and today they have a homeless problem. There are fewer homeless in the entire state of Ohio than in Seattle. The amount of money spent in Seattle and Portland, OR on programs specifically to get people off the streets is stratospheric. We have free health care, including drug treatment and mental health counseling and medications (if necessary), easy access food stamps, and many NGOs in addition to city sponsored group whose only interest is the poor and homeless. We have built low income housing in the past few years at a phenomenal rate as well. The numbers keep growing. Homelessness skyrocketed due to unavailable housing, and rent pricing. You're making $600/wk, but your rent is $1,800/mo...IF you can get an apartment! Get a cheaper apartment? 🤣 Where? Our social safety net has been allowed to rot on the vine. Eligibility criteria have not been updated in decades for many programs, such as SSI, Medicaid, and TANF. This is one consequence of outdated criteria combined with inflation. Working under the table, or otherwise receiving and earning cash under the table, is one of the few ways that welfare recipients can build savings without getting caught up in outdated means-tests. It’s technically welfare fraud, true, but ethically I have no problem with people doing this because the criteria have (far too often) not been updated for inflation in decades… and lawmakers simply don’t seem to care.

Much of the source of problem is simply too much population increase too quickly. US population increased about 20% since year 2000. When I was a kid growing up in Seattle, in 1970's I always took the Metro bus everywhere, and I used to see a bunch of small shacks, the remains of a "Hooverville" type villiage. Californians started moving up in the 1980's, making reasonable priced houses, very expensive. I knew then, I would never be able to afford a house in Seattle. I went to College in Eastern Washington, jumped at an internship out of state and then used it as my jumping off point enjoying cheap housing in the SE of the country. i I would drive cross country every year and visit with my MOM in Seattle, but Seattle was getting worse, and crime was out of control. My mom's house was broken into by junkies, and they tried to steal her Catholic relics. Her power of attorney, dumped her in an old folk's home, telling me after the fact, so I do nothing about it.
