Garnet was never meant to be the leader, she only became leader by process of elimination. Amethyst is inexperienced and young, Pearl would probably have inherited the leadership role as Rose's right hand gem but she was too messed up by grief and if you compare how she is now with how she's said to be during the gem war and in the past, it's clear that she's become somewhat of a shell of herself and completely lost her confidence. It's often overlooked that Garnet never asked to be made the leader, and it probably had a bad effect on her mental health, she doesn't really have the opportunity to have fun or show her vulnerabilities because she needs to hold everyone together in the wake of Rose's death.

I want to add to the topic: On regard of cross-gem fusion, the properties of the real life gems also apply. For example, rubies and sapphires are almost identical, only difference being rubies containing chrome in their structure that give it their red hues. In a similar matter, garnets are also related to the previous 2 stones, which explains the naming. The convention carries forward when you think about it. Obsidian can be both a natural found mineral or a volcanic glass made from melting of many rocks, including gems, in short time. That would also explain my point with naming convention. Another good example is Malachite actually being similar to both jasper AND lapis in structure.

I feel like it's related to the chemistry of their gemstones, when they fuse their gemstones changes color which is not normal, for example when garnet is formed she doesn't have a sapphire gemstone and a ruby gemstone as her gems but two garnets, perhaps this is how they decide their naming? based on the new type of their gemstones?

@@sckaze777 gems from the same type can have different gemcuts like jasper having a diamond cut unlike other jaspers, or pearl having an oval gem unlike other pearls. so in theory Garnet could have two garnet gemstones but just with different cuts, after all gems can't change their gem color.

I feel like it also has to do with the inherent abilities of the fusions/the games making them up, compared to other gems on homeworld. Garnets, who typically hold positions of power, and are good at combat, would make complete sense for a Ruby(a soldier), and a sapphire (an elite in gem society) to hold similar abilities to a regular garnet. Another example could be opal, we didn’t see any regular opals in the show but considering they reflect light so much, it would make sense that they have light powers. Opal’s arrows are made of light and explode into light shards before lighting up the whole area. Perhaps Opals on Home-world have a similar or same ability to light areas up?

We DO have an equivalent to Rainbow Quartz in Little Homeworld which is Angel Aura Quartz (the terms to describe the gem are used interchangeably) The single gemed Rainbow "Angel Aura" Quartz has blue skin and yellow hair and different colored accents on her form.

my theory is that they don't choose their own names. gems are born with a purpose, as someone in the comments already said. the reason smokey didn't know her name at first is that amethyst and steven both have identity issues and self worth and purpose issues, so it makes sense that their fusion wouldn't know herself at first. but that's just my theory. a gem theory

This is ignoring a lot of details. For one, the reason Blue laughs at Garnet's name specifically is because Garnet isn't a gem, it's a class of gems. It would be like if there was a Gem fusion named Quartz. Secondly, the reason Smokey didn't know their name is because it's implied Amythyst and Rose never fused before, every gem fusion we see happen for the first time makes up their name, except for Rainbow 2.0, who is Rainbow 2.0, and Sunstone which implies that Garnet and Rose have fused before. I mean Steven as Smokey Quartz even states he feels like Amythyst should know what they make together, and it's not like Amythyst knows what an actual Smokey Quartz looks like so he was literally asking if this fusion existed previously. (All three gems also act completely surprised by Smokey Quartz's abilities, it's doubtful Steven's fusion weapons would be different from Roses, so that pretty much confirms the fact Smokey didn't exist before) Peridot was also with Smokey when she first came into existence and said "Who cares about your name, you've got a fight to win". Obviously fusion is taboo on Homeworld but Peridot would definitely know what type of gem Smokey was and if the show did want to suggest that fusions are explicitly named after their normal counterparts Peridot would have been the perfect person to make that clear right there and then.

I always thought of the cross fusion naming system being more of a combination of the gem's status. Sapphire (really high rank) ruby(low rank soldier) = high rank leader But the issues with that come in with Rose/Pink Diamond and Steven and 3+ gem fusions A simple explaination for the 3+ cross gem fusions being the gem ranking be in more of an additive sense than a subtractive. The value of a garnet + with the small amount if value added by a pearl and an amethyst making alexandrite. With stevrn and rose ir diesnt make sonde why all the fusions from these teo are are quartz or common gems. But my theory on this is how rose was able to make herself perceived as a wuartz soldier her fusions reflect that too desite her true nature as a diamond. The wuartz form being Steven's default meaning his fusions reflect that

When you realize unless steven fuses with a quartz, there's no quartz involved in the fusion, so rainbow quartz isn't actually quartz, for example, I think Opal would be a better name for steven/pearl fusion than pearl/amethyst

I actually think that the fusions that are super big are really big due to unstable or destructive relationships between the fused gems, not the fact that their name ends with “ite”, since garnet’s power and amethyst’s destructive tendencies together make something awful and powerful, and also just… everything about lapis and jasper’s relationship.

Size has more to do with the number of gems involved and their relative size than anything else. Fusions with 3 or more gems tend to be the largest, and fusions with large gems like Jasper or Pink Diamond tend to grow really large.

I always just assumed that after fusing the fusions just sort of… knew their name, or at least had a sense of what felt right, what felt correct to them, much like alters in a DID system (or at least in my limited understanding of those). Blue Diamond probably made that comment because 1. She’s never fused before so she wouldn’t Know what it’s like, and 2. It’s outlawed so information on minor things like how fusions come about their names wouldn’t be documented because the goal is to prevent it from happening, not to understand it

What's interesting to me is that, Steven/Rose's gem isn't actually a rose quarts, but a pink diamond, so Rainbow Quartz and Smoky Quartz caught my attention since the big revela, cause they still have quartz in their name, even though there is no rose quartz. So that makes me think that the fusion actually chooses their identity based on their characteristics, but it's also interesting how we never see a gem "deciding" their name, other than Smoky's, since, for example, Sunstone just says their own name naturally.

I was thinking if its abouts the minerals that makes the gems combined to form a different gem, and thats the name. Even if its a half science, not a chemistry exactly correct. Maybe an azurite, a pirite and a calcite fusion could form a lapis lazuli, for example. Since Lapis is this 3 minerals combined into one. The result could be a different looking lapis, maybe with some different powers, but could still be considered a lapis.
