In this video I bring you along as I climb to the summit of Mont Blanc (4809 m) the highest mountain in the Alps and Western Europe.
This video will show you the classic mountaineering itinerary of preparing and acclimatizing on Gran Paradiso, the rest day and the climb of Mont Blanc via the Normal Route (also called Gouter Route), that takes me through the the Grand Couloir and past the Tête Rousse and Goûter huts.
This is the humble start to my KZbin channel, where I will share my outdoor adventures and everything related. I would feel very honored if you would consider liking and subscribing.
Thank you so much for watching! Please leave any comments or questions below, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you! It means a lot to me that you and others are commenting. I am blown away by all the kind comments. How do you think your 1993 climb compares to this? How nice that I could play a small role in keeping the memories alive.

Really nice video Rasmus. Have watched before but came to watch again after seeing that the guided trip I am hoping to go on in 2023 now follows the same itinerary as yours (Gran Paradiso before Mont Blanc). I love the emotion you show on the summit, respect for being open about that....I'm pretty sure I'll be crying too! 2 questions: what lumen headtorch did you take, and you mention having a fear of heights....which part of the week triggered that the most? Thanks 😊
@rasmuspreston
@rasmuspreston Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words! I feel like we should normalize big emotions and be okay with showing that we are overwhelmed by joy, excitement, relief etc. But it definitely felt scary to publish the video knowing anyone would be able to see me crying haha. Sounds really exciting that you are planning your own climb! I wish you the best of luck. You should totally watch my gear video and read my blog about all the gear over at rasmuspreston.com My headlamp was a 400 lumen Black Diamond Storm. I actually lost that headlamp on the descend from the summit somehow. My fear of heights was triggered mainly on the summit of Gran Paradiso and on the climb between the Tête Rousse Hut and the Gouter Hut, where the route goes up a steep arête. And I was also quite scared about the Grand Couloir for the fear of loose rock, but that turned out not to be an issue for us. I hope that helps!

Nice vid, thanks. Blisters are quite easy to deal with. Just use a needle to put a thread through them, and leave both ends hanging out of the blister. Leave the thread in there overnight and the blister will have dried out by next morning. Also, to prevent blisters, wear two pairs of socks (think + thick or 2x thin) and you'll be fine. Instead of your sock rubbing on your skin, it'll be the outer sock rubbing your inner sock, so usually you won't experience blisters that way.
@rasmuspreston
@rasmuspreston 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice. I actually wore two pairs of socks, but still ended up with blister because I didn't break in the boots before the trip :) And the blisters became infected before I could do anything about them, but luckily the pharmacy helped my with some antibiotic treatment for it that helped it heal very fast. I also have a very protruding heel which makes me prone to blisters.

Congrats on the successful climb, must've been an amazing experience. I was so surprised when you said you started developing those blisters. It happened to me during my beginners climbing course and I kept walking with them for 4 days (was a bad idea) Eventually the instructor and I decided that it would be best if I stayed in the hut while the rest of them went to the summit, really bummed me out. I saw you have the La Sportiva EVO boots and I have the same ones, so it's a coincidence we've both had the heel blisters.
@rasmuspreston
@rasmuspreston 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and thanks for watching my video. The climb was truly amazing. And what a "funny" coincidence! So you must know all about the suffering blisters can give you. It is not fun at all especially when you have spend a lot of money, trained hard and looked forward to a trip for months. I hope you had a good experience even though it was cut short. I am keen to try other boots and brands as I feel I haven't yet found a good fit for my feet. My heel sticks out quite a bit which is the reason for the blisters as there is often not enough space to accommodate that at the back of the boots.

@@rasmuspreston i did have a good experience and learned a lot from our instructor, but it was a shame I couldn't summit. I hope to do it sometime soon though. I asked around on a forum on how to tackle the blistering problem and apparently going "double socks" is a pretty good solution. I hope that works because I can't wait to make mountainclimbing my proper hobby :)
@rasmuspreston
@rasmuspreston 2 жыл бұрын
A good friend told me that the summit is optional and getting home is mandatory ;) But I know the feeling. I turned around on Rainier a few years ago and was pretty bummed out. I hope you bag it soon! Double sock is great but for me it doesn't solve the problem completely. I use kinesio tape on the places I know will get irritated. I also try to change socks so my feet don't stay too moist and wash my feet as bacteria also play a role in blisters developing as far as I know. Good luck!

Thanks for watching Jack! I used Chamonix Experience ( www.chamex.com ) and I have used them for a mountaineering course before. I was very satisfied both times and highly recommend them. Gran Paradiso was alright. The pigtails that you can run the rope through makes it feel very safe. I am sorry it doesn't show better in the video, I definitely could have done a better job at that. It wasn't anything crazy exposed and the summit feels very nice and secure. For the Grand Couloir i had no problems. It changes year to year, but we had a very good path. I would say that Bosses ridge on Mont Blanc is very steep, but the fresh snow helped us.

A great video you have there, also the gear one is good. My climbing partner & I are hoping to do Mont Blanc next year, we've been to the Ecrins twice but not been over 3700m so far. I know I have a lot of training to do! A question - did your guide have both the Tete Rousse & the Gouter huts booked in advance? It sounded like you were going to ascend directly from Tete Rousse until the weather changed?

Thank you Duncan! I am happy you enjoyed both videos. Good luck with your preparations for Mont Blanc, you will not regret taking on the challenge. Our guide did have both huts booked in advance, yes. As you write we planned to reach the summit in one push from Tete Rousse and sleep in the Gouter hut coming down. As the summit push got postponed we had an easier climb up the last bit but the full descend needed to happen in one day.

Thank you so much for watching Edwin, I am very happy you liked it! I can wholeheartedly recommend Chamonix Experience (www.chamex.com). They offer great courses and climbs. All their prices are displayed on their site. I have done their Mountaineering Course lvl 1 and then this climb. Both can be physically and mentally hard but if you are fit and up for it I see no problem in doing both with a short rest in-between. The guide was Pete Mason for both trips.

That is so exciting Frank, you will not be disappointed! The Alps are just a magnificent playground. And thank you so much for watching my video. I really enjoy reading the comments. There are two things I would change. First of all I would spend more time breaking in my boots. And second I would have spent more time taping up and taking care of my feet on Gran Paradiso. Hi Sean. Thanks for watching! Yes, it would have been difficult for us to navigate without the guide. Mainly because we were the first group to leave from the Gouter Hut on our summit night and it had snowed. All the tracks were covered etc. The guide is key in that situation, as the guide knows the mountain really well. I think it would also have been difficult to navigate the big plateau on Grand Paradiso before the last stretch on glacier.

Great video. What was the reason for leaving the gouter hut so early. Was it because you couldn't stay there a third night and therefore had to pass the couloir on the way down before midday? I'm guessing you left Tete hut much later because the intention was to stay in the gouter on the return giving you all day.
@rasmuspreston
@rasmuspreston 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard! You have got it exactly right. We had planned to do the summit push from Tete with a short stop at Gouter. But because of the weather delay we had to get a very early start from Gouter to get down. The huts are fully booked in peak season so staying an extra night was not possible (and not included in the price).

Thank you! I believe we paid 2300 euro for Chamex (guide, lift cards, huts and some food). I can see they adjusted the price to 2550 euro for this season. Then I spent around 300-400 euro on food, water, snacks and restaurants and then 800 euro for the hotel (400 each). Add any gear costs to that. Quite expensive :)

Thank you so much Alex! The photos are taken in RAW instead of JPEG which gives me more flexibility to grade and edit them afterwards. I use Adobe Lightroom to edit all my photos. There are plenty of good tutorials here on KZbin if you have the time to look it up :) It also helps to have a good camera and lens. In this case I used the Sony a7SIII and a Tamron 17-28 mm F/2.8. And of course the scenery is just beautiful. Thanks again!

Good luck on your June attempt Distrax! I will be releasing my gear video this week :) How to layer is dependent on both weather and personal preference. Thanks for watching and commenting Oliver 👊 I filmed most of it on a Sony A7SIII camera and the Tamron 17-28 mm 2.8 lens. Some parts were filmed with a GoPro 9, as it wasn't always possible to get the bigger camera out. I was trying to strike a balance between making good shots and not pissing off my guide by spending too much time fumbling. The pictures were taken with the Sony A7SIII in RAW format even though it only does 12 megapixel photos. Really happy you enjoyed it :)

Hi, what a great video 👍🏻 I’m going on the 15, we went last year to but due ti weather only got as far at gouter hut. You climbed down in 1 day top to bottom ? But stopped in two huts in the way up ? What we’re your pitch times ? Tram to first hut (tatruse?) First to gouter Gouter to summit Sumit to tram ? We aim to go tram to gouter day one Then gouter to sumit and back to gouter day 2 . Then gouter to tram day three. I feel like more time going up and less down would be better ?

@rasmuspreston Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching James 👊 Our itinerary changed because of bad weather. We were supposed to go past the Gouter Hut directly to the summit and then back down to Gouter to sleep. But because of the weather we stayed at the Gouter hut first and then summitted the following morning with a 3 am start from the hut. And then all the way back down the same day as the summit. I don't remember exact times, sorry. But I think 1,5-2 hours from Tête Rousse Hut to Gouter Hut and the same back down. No clue about the other times as it has been almost a year. You can definitely go to the Gouter hut in one day I would say, depends on availability. But that might affect your acclimatization depending on what you are doing before climbing Mont Blanc. Also comes down to how fit and experienced you and your group is. Don't underestimate the physical challenge of this mountain. Have a great climb!

Thank you for the video Rasmus. I booked a MB summit in July 2021 What advise do you have to prevent blisters? Did you have trainers for the Hikes as well as mountaineering boots? And did you hire or buy the latest? Lastly.....what fitness level do you have yo be?
@rasmuspreston
@rasmuspreston 2 жыл бұрын
Hey BoosieBosvark, thank you for watching! And it sounds exciting that you booked your own trip :D In terms of blisters my advice would be to break in your boots thoroughly before your climb. Trail runners can be used for getting to the hut on Gran Paradiso and up until the Tete Rousse hut on Mont Blanc. You should also tape up your feet before hitting the trail. I use kinesio tape, but there are various brands and options. I bought my own boots, but I also know I will be using them for years to come :) I will soon upload my gear video with recommendations for everything! In terms of fitness, it does require more than your typical hike. I will quote myself from one of the other comments here: I am by no means an expert on training, but I will describe briefly what I did. I have been lifting weights for some years and continued doing that prior to this trip 4 training sets per week. I focus on compound exercises, which works for me. Additionally I trained a lot on a hill in Copenhagen, which is 85 meters high. I would do one day with 6 laps (510 meters up and 510 meters down) and one day with 12 laps (1020 m up and down) every week. I did that for 10 weeks, and I increased the intensity each time by going faster and adding more weight to my backpack. Just before the trip I could do 12 laps with 12 kg in my pack in 2 hours. Besides that I try to bike as much as possible for my daily commute and climb at the bouldering gym. For proper advice on training I would refer to this book www.patagonia.com/product/training-for-the-new-alpinism/BK695.html which is the bible for many mountaineers afaik :) Feel free to ask any additional questions!

Thank you so much for watching! :) I carried my GoPro in my chest pocket and brought one extra battery. @@hassannaeem8673 I don't think experience with rock climbing is necessary. But it wouldn't hurt for when you are climbing the arete to the Gouter Hut. Mainly I would advise to you to get in a really good shape. Go out multiple times a week and do +1000 m vertical meters of hiking/scrambling with a pack on. In some of the other comments here I have described what I did for training, you could look that up. In terms of technical skills it would be great to be familiar with crampons before you go. It will make you a lot faster. But check out the page of the guide company we used www.chamex.com/trip_courses/climb-mont-blanc-6-day-course They write about requirements. A classic 6 day guided climb will including time for learning the skills. I hope you guys go do it! Let me know if you do :)
