@DIY Urban Gardening - Looking at the video, it appears that the mixture was about 50% soil, 20% charred rice husks, 20% composted manure or vermiculture, and about 10% egg shells. With the mixture being put together based on your personal experience, you probably don't need precise measures and can accept the mixtures being +/- 5% or so. Is my guess on the proportions about right or significantly off? I see from all your videos that you do mostly container gardening with most of that being recycled bottles or containers that would normally end up in a land fill or littering the ground. Very nice to see that kind of upcycling for the old plastic. Do you think your mix is something that could be used over a few years to remediate heavy garden soil that is mainly clay and small rocks? If so, that would be a help for those of us doing more ground planting and less vertical container gardening.

The aster is a pretty perennial that works well as a border for vegetable gardens. ... Calendula. If you want pretty flowers that deter garden pests, you can't do better than calendula. ... Darn, I forgot to add the "elevated" component. I do live on the side of a hill, but right now no porch, certainly not an elevated terrace. I actually, got lucky. I found in a "neighborhood" chat forum, a lady w/in 5 miles. She had 3cu ft aluminum "cages"? They held 100 gallon white plastic water containers. I bought 2 of those $50, US. Went to my local Home Depot. I, got 6 T-posts. (used for wire fencing). Also, looked at those water jugs he used. 😮 $22.00 each No. Came home, in the "paint dept" 2 gallon white buckets $5. (Woo Hoo) The soldering iron he used to make the holes. $2.68 at Walmart. What I am doing, is putting 3 posts across the tops of the big aluminum things. From there, I am going to hang the plants, in the 2 Gal buckets. I got 2 "S" hooks for each bucket. Each side of the handle to keep them even and steady from wind. 😬 I did "run amok" in the veggie plant dept. I have, 14 plants in total. Only the basil and cilantro need the shade. I am hoping you can gain some tips. I live, and always have lived in "the country". This project was not inexpensive. I'm mid 60's. I have Never been able to grow anything. My land is Clay soil and rocks exploded from Mt. Lassen. I can't even get a Christmas deer anchored down. 🙄 This, is my "last hurrah". Pray for me to finally get some fresh tomatoes and peppers. 🤗

In rice growing regions, it's very easy to get hold of it as it is a byproduct of rice agriculture. In Singapore, although we don't grow rice, we are near countries which do and it's easy to get hold of it at the garden nurseries at $4 for an 8L bag (both burnt and unburnt rice husk), which is actually quite expensive.

Love your videos. Thank you for sharing. How do you make the chicken poop compost, please? I have lots of the poop. My dad told me it would burn the plants, but your tomatoes are just amazing using the poop.

Take the chicken poop, mix in to a pile with compostable material like veggies peels,stalks etc from the kitchen. Add some garden soil,egg hells, brown cardboard, cowdung etc. Add some sour yoghurt or buttermilk and some brown sugar/ jaggery. Mix well and keep covered away from direct sunlight. The composting will take place within 60 days. The material needs to be turned over on a weekly basis for good aeration to speed things up.

I'm pretty sure he's using the "rice hulls"for added aeration in the potting mix, but perlite can be used instead just don't burn it Lol I'm sure he's just burning the rice hulls for some silica as that's what the ash produces, then he uses eggshells I guess for a slow release of some potassium. But I will say if anybody's put eggshells in their compost it takes quite a bit to break down so I'm not sure how available that would be for nutrition.

I took it to mean soil from one's garden. Soil that's been amended and has a lot of bio life in it. If you don't have that, then I would use A-horozon topsoil...stuff you might find in a thick forest or under the brush alongside a river. Stuff that smells warm and earthy

Do you reuse the old soil or throw it out?

Never ever throw away used soil. Good soil is a scarce commodity. You can rejuvinate it by spreading and drying in partial shade. Mix fifty percent of used soil with husk or dry powdered leaves (20 percent), 20 percent vermiculite and remaining 10 percent potash, neem leaves charcoal in powder, dry chicken or animal droppings. Mix thoroughly sprinkling water very lightly cover the heap for 4 days . Ensure you mix the soil as above daily. From the sixth day your enriched soil is ready for use . In a wide plastic container/ grow bag put dry leaves, small twigs at the bottom, vegetables and fruit peels , card board shredded sprinkle handful of compost and soil moisten the mixture lightly, repeat the process till you reach slightly more than half way mark . Holding two ends of the bag gently tap it few tlmes. Now top up the grow bag with used soil upto 80 percent. Fill the remaining portion of the bag with enriched soil and grow vegetables etc. This way your soil is enriching below through microbial activity and will be ready for use by the time harvesting is complete. Enjoy gardening.
