The Mayflower Mystery becomes a lot less mysterious when you remember that New France has been around since the 1540s and traded with the various migrating natives for more than half a century before the Mayflower set sail. Hell, the first attempt at settling what is today Quebec dates from 1543, Saint Croix Island in Maine was settled in 1604 and Annapolis Royal on Nova Scotia in 1605. It's highly likely Voyageurs travelled south over land while French fishermen sailed and traded up and down the coast for decades before the Pilgrims set foot on America. And the French were having excellent relations with the natives to the point that intermarrying with them was very common.
@joendeo1890Ай бұрын
Yes I find it quite likely the person in question was either shipwrecked or abandoned his crew, lived with the natives for a time bringing many goods with him. Had a child. Then European disease came through. Killed him and his child. And before anyone could scavenge/reuse his metal pot they also died of disease.

In the 128 years between Columbus & the Mayflower the eastern coast of America was heavily fished for Cod. The sailors would build processing settlements for the fish on the shorelines. Sometimes for a year or more between visits of the ships. Dozens of men would live and fish in these temporary forts. There are some great videos about it on YT. What was most eerie from the Pilgrims descriptions was the abandoned native villages. They were described as surrounded by graves and looked like the inhabitants just walked away one day. We know now that 100 years of European diseases killed upwards of 90% of the populations in the Americas, leaving literal Ghost Villages.
@FTZPLTCАй бұрын
There's also Leif Erikson. I guess the "in the area" part is important but, still, there were Europeans on the North American continent centuries before Columbus. EDIT: I dum, the video addressed this. Still, another aspect is that ... yeah, the Pilgrim fathers seem to have been pretty ignorant of the country they were heading to. There's a famous story of them encountering a Native American who spoke English and thinking it was some kind of proof that God made these lands for them, but like... dude had actually just already been to Europe and back a couple of times by the time they met him. I know news didn't travel as fast back then as it does now, but still, you'd think they could've fitted the pieces together, or just asked him.

Regarding the pre-Mayflower ruins. A palisade is the sharpened log fence/wall around a fort. Going by how its described in the text, there was no fort left to describe, just the palisade.
@EqqusHeartsАй бұрын
Also there are viking ruins that pre-date the Mayflower found in Maine/Nova Scotia. I think the current stance is that there were viking settlements in New England that were used seasonally. Greenland is relatively close to New England and it was inhabited by Vikings starting in the 10th century. Then again New England is home to dozens of indigenous peoples and they definitely used palisades as well.

@@nickb5371 That's just it though... I can't think of any other time I've heard of that method of burial. * looks it up * oh... well THAT made the mystery deepen.... This is how they buried people. Thing is... it's generally dated to no more recent than 400 BC!!! 2000 years previous to this??? I was thinking that it's not that hard to believe that records of an expedition were just lost. Nate breezed by it, but he said the pilgrims were "allowed" to settle further south which means at the very least surveyors have been by to map the coast to stake claims. The fort, grave, and worked iron easily could have been from an expedition like this. There was 100+ years between Columbus and the Pilgrims, so any number of perfectly normal and expected things could have happened and records weren't kept or just lost.

Roanoke is also less a mystery and more a misunderstood part of history. There are great books on the subject! The Kroatoan (sp) people most likely took them in when their supplies ran out. They were poorly prepared for the trip to begin with and some left to resupply. They even left a famous carving of Kroatoan. They were a Native people who the settlers were frient with - many Native Americans helped settlers only to be taken advantage of or catching awful European diseases (accidentally or on purpose by the invasive settlers) or killed. There are so many records of friendly, generous and caring tribes.. it breaks my heart we will never know what they could have grown into without the invasion.
