Canadian from calgary and moved to Darmstadt. Same reason as you: for Love. I love both countries and I have to say its interesting hearing all the comparisons and opinions from your videos. It’s cool to hear other Canadians having similar views pro or con for Germany. I’d still call Canada home but after living here for a few years now I can call Germany home too. I think it’s always about the relationships you build, and those relationships can make any place home. Anyways thanks for the very relatable content. I for one love New Years here. But I also love fireworks 🎉🎇🎆. Frohes neues!

It can be a balancing act sometimes, emotions, relationships, and all the growth in between going back from one home to another. Especially when both sides have such pros and cons. Particularly for the kiddos. So many things are great here but sometimes the school life excitement and celebrations in Canada are some of the best memories that so many here haven't experienced. @@lifeingermany_

I am a Canadian living in Germany, I hate the fireworks mostly because I have had dogs for the last say 12 years and they are terrified. Also Germany is a very green nation and I can't imagine how much bad stuff is put into the air because of the fireworks. Also seems to be getting much worse were people just leave there garbage everywhere after celebrating. Frohes neues zusammen. 🐞🍀✨

I am a foreigner living in a village off a town off a city close to a forest. Despite how remote we are from everything, the neighbourhoods here go crazy with fireworks! Back yard; front yard; middle of the street...it's crazy, and nowhere to escape! I have two dogs, who are severely affected and I hate this tradition here. I can't believe this is legal in a country where EVERYTHING else is controlled. How is it possible that every individual can put on their own fireworks display?! Haven't there been any accidents? And is there no consideration for wildlife. In this village, we are literally surrounded... I can't believe this is allowed to go on...

Feuerzangenbowle is also the named a black white movie from 1944, as some mentioned. The reason why it was made, while bombs detonate all around was simple. The Germans wanted to have something to laugh. Talken about Movies, you may enjoy aswell the movie Münchhausen from 1943, I think. The Germans seethe biggest consumers of Sekt in the world. The word silvester comes from a pope who died on a 31th December in the year 300or 301or something

@@lifeingermany_ Thank you! Actually I do have a question I am pondering over for all my (traveling) life. I have a hunch that American fashion is conservative. Despite the creativeness of certain cultural branches. Like flower power. I listened to a colleague's report on her stint into US business culture. (At AT&T) While in Germany a woman can wear whatever she wants, from skirts to business suits, she told us that it was expected from her to wear skirts in the professional environment. Since this is about 30 years old stuff it seems to highlight a more conservative attitude in the business world than in Germany/Europe. And in the same vein I observe that there is a stereotype that women want to have long hair. Even when they become more mature and should have found out what fits them best and not be driven by others forcing their views on them. I notice this especially with news anchors, because that's the majority of encounters I have with the US culture over the year. You hardly see any women there with short hairs. And for the male part they always have short hair anyway. So a video on underlying stereotypes would be interesting because as a German I don't have access to those cultural memes. BTW, don't get me wrong. You look perfect with you hair style. I really like the Pferdeschwanz. It fits you nicely. But it is not for everyone at all times and everywhere. It is just so ubiquitous.

Okay, I once knew where that "Guten Rutsch" comes from, and I thought it was Yiddish, but just to be sure, I looked it up, and, yes, I was right. It's from Hebrew "rosch" which means "beginning", so you're just wishing "A good start (into the new year)". I live in a small Bavarian village, and I met with two friend in the children's playground where the villagers did their fireworks. One of my friends brought some red wine which we swallowed just drinking out of the bottle. We watched the others do their fireworks, had a short talk with some, and when everything was over and the bottle was empty, we went back home. There were surprisingly many children and surprisingly few really drunk people, so it was a very peaceful gathering. The idea of launching the rockets in the playground was a wise one in my opinion. It's impossible for a rocket to litter the place where it has been launched, so there's no need for cleaning up the next day. And there seemingly was an unspoken consensus that nobody brings really loud explosives. No wonder, everyone here loves children, or animals, or both. I don't regret I moved back here some 20 years ago (oh, how time passes!) and will never again leave, although it's a really boring place.

This was my first year living in Germany, so my first Silvester.. and I'm definitely not a fan. Hard to reconcile the image of Germany with such a 'green'/'quiet way of life to have the enviromental equivalent of 'the purge', noise, air, and ground pollution. I went out for a bit today and every inch of open space was covered in trash. I have not seen a place in the US in my entire life as dirty as Munich was today. At 3 am they were still doing fireworks before i passed out but I woke up the next morning to the sounds of fireworks still. Even as i type, a salvo of them continue the day after. It makes me sad that humans can't have fun without destroying everything around us and making everyone around us miserable. Will definitely be trying to have a mini trip away from here this time next year. (and no, i do not want to move 'back where I came from' for one holiday being annoying, i've been very happy with my day-to-day here.)

Nowadays they don't use plastics for the fireworks (in Germany), which means it's at least a little bit more environmental friendly. I agree that it's a pain ... that some people start using fireworks directly after buying and even a couple of days after NYE. Because it's pure stress for many animals, I hope that in a couple of years fireworks will not be sold for private use anymore.

You said it perfectly, it is like ‘the purge’ and in NRW, I feel like this is also relative to Karneval! People go insane, partying, drinking, destroying the city, (and I’ve heard from quite a few Germans that even cheating on your partner is accepted because “what happens during Karneval is kept secret from everyone” 😶🫢🫣 And then I look at Germans any other day of the week and they’re so environmentally friendly, and so loyal, and honest… it mind boggles me!

What will happen if you visit India / Pakistan on their festivals 😂

I’ve worked in India before and absolutely loved the festivals that were hosted while I was there! Although none were with fireworks! Just lots of colour and dancing 🥰 I was there in September and October I believe

there are masses of foreigners for instance in Berlin who enjoy it or take part of shooting fireworks. Its like always and also with Germans: some are scared and/or dont like it, some hang between fascination and a bit weird feeling, others enjoy to take part of it. That the cities have to be cleaned is a no argument. They anyways have to be cleaned all the time and at least after Silvester/NYE the cleaning result is a bit more obvous/satisfying -- just like Vakuum Cleaning. If there is almost nothing then it sucks more then if you see concrete results. Smoke and so on after a heavy firework adds to the atmosphere. Again: its like always, some ppl interprete reality negative, others more the positive aspects - or mixed. Again, nothing new here.

I can guarantee you that no one else here will agree with the statement you just made, I’m sorry 🙈 It absolutely does not take “only a month” to understand a language for the average human being! It takes hard work and dedication to learn and usually takes about a year if you’re dedicated to learning intensively. Great to know you’re one in a million though 👍
