I built 2 gs1000 Suzuki engines for the TT allowing a more clearance than normal. We had a Japanese engine builder who came over never asked us about the TT and proceeded to build his engine when we told him how log the race was he fell about laughing told us it would last about 30 miles then strip and rebuild. The tolerances he was working to were so fine. The actual engine was a work of art. He really taught me how important checking and measuring are and double checking so spot on Lee

I recall a nighttime photo at a drag strip about half a century ago. The photograph was looking right down the start line. Fiat Topolino Fuel Altered. Through the side window you can see the driver is looking down. The crank, rods, pistons, and flywheel were on the asphalt. That’s pretty well blown up!

Hi Lee, my late "Great " Father used to grind cranks for a local bus company, often he would have to re-stroke a bent crank to bottom under size , then it would be ground to bottom tolerance as they would need to be re nitrided . After that treatment and polished they would be on mid to top limit.

Thanks for the video on running clearances. It’s not a new subject; especially on this channel and it’s definitely a subject that bears repeating. I’ve got two engines to build in the next couple of months once my shop is done and I won’t be taking anything for granted in terms of piston just out or running clearances. Cheers.

Just a random comment ref.crankshafts and rods.If you could actually visibly see an engine at just 4000 rpm it would be a blur to the naked eye let alone to a two stroker at 10000 rpm.The stresses are ridiculous so just a gnats cock out and disaster looms.Always still impresses me.

It impresses me too and i understand engines, recently i was polishing a crank for a customer and i decided to spin it at 850 or so reves in the lathe to let the customer see what it looked like with the engine at idling revs, they were shocked. I said to them now imagine it at 7000 rpm's, they were speechless.

Some electric motors can do 35 to 50,000 rpm. The magnets have to be wrapped in carbon fiber to keep them attached to the rotor.

Yep, we've had some unfortunate experiences with poor manufacturing on the commercial side, with head gaskets going far to early in engine life. (It became a recognised weakness of particular tractor models) The company who replaced the gasket on our tractor wouldn't guarantee their work until surfaces had been faced. Out of interest I wish I'd gone to see the state of those surfaces when they were faced.

You check for size and tolerances on just about everything, but I don't recollect any check for alignment of the main bearing in the block. I've often found they need a line-boring session to correct this.

I order at least 2 sets of main & rod bearings because bearings aren’t perfect, cranks aren’t always ground perfect, and then I can go through the various bearings to match up with my Mic’d rod and mains.

Great video. Any comments on big end bearing material? I know King Bearings offer a range of materials, including non-lead based, but am I right in thinking non-lead based big end bearings are more prone to spun bearings and pre-mature wear? Some newer diesel engines (BMW B47 as one example) seem to be having big end issues. What's the likely cause? And how important is oil temperatures in maintining big end bearings - given they're a softer material they have lower melting points, but is this something we should worry about?

I've only built a few engines over the years, mostly for myself but helped friends with theirs many times. It is absolutely essential to check the clearances two or three times or even more! All it takes is ONE thing being out of spec and all that work is wasted! Back then (mid '80s or so) the "serious" engine builders looked down on Plastigauge and insisted the only way to do it "right" was with mics that we didn't have! As I remember all our rod and main clearances came our dead on .001" ... 😁
@charliejackman2953
@charliejackman2953 Жыл бұрын
There were negative comments about Plastigauge I seem to remember when Lee first started to include them in his videos however long ago that was. Personally, I'd never heard of the process and thought it was a great way to prove the engineering that had taken place previously. I put the negativity down to snobbery 😉

You can read a micrometer being held by someone else, while just standing near them? Want to know what the future holds? A big magnifying glass and something to rest your elbows on to reduce the trembling. And even doing that, still rereading a few times because you don’t trust your own answers.

Good question. For me being a journeyman mechanic of 30 years, I need the machining and some measurement I do not have the equipement to perform, done by specialists. But I want to do the assembly and verify everything. There are others with an interest but minimal experience that should let an expert do the work. I have done brake overhaul on drum brakes where someone has installed the long shoes on the front instead of the rear. One even had both short shoes on the left side and the long shoes on the right. Someone trying to save a bit and cocked it up. Now when it comes to engine or transmissions, you better know what you are doing as the consequences of failed assembly gets expensive real quickly.
@georgebettiol8338
@georgebettiol8338 Жыл бұрын
You will save significant sums of money, if you outsource the machining tasks and are 'capable' of building an engine - it's that simple. Unfortunately, there are some that believe that building an engine is as simple as assembling it like a toy meccano set - i.e. just bolt all the parts together without conducting the required clearance and condition checks/adjustments, including the inappropriate reuse of components that are well past their prime - e.g. oil pump, cam followers, chains, etc. I have encountered owners with poorly assembled engines that didn't even own the most basic of measuring tool - a vernier caliper.
@daledavies2334
@daledavies2334 Жыл бұрын
@@georgebettiol8338In my 30 years as a mechanic, I agree with most. What I do not agree with is the rampant habit of replacing good oil pumps. As long as the engine did not run out of oil or have grit for some source go through it, the oil pump can be cleaned, inspected and clearances verified. If the clearances are in specifications and no serious scoring is found, reuse it. Many will see a small scratch or a witness mark and toss the pump for that reason. One small scratch is not an issue, galling and big scratches are an issue. Flat tappet followers and timing chains are pretty much a given replacement.
@davidnorton5887
@davidnorton5887 Жыл бұрын
@@daledavies2334 I think most oil pumps are pretty cheap, so they get changed. However, with the state of many aftermarket parts these days, it may be better to stick with a proven good unit, than take a chance with a good looking new, but otherwise crap, replacement.
