If the Fire Service shows up to " Do an Audit " your BEST option is to just accept . They are NOT there to " Bend you Over " . Just to do some REMINDING about standards . It IS about YOUR safety . They aren't enforcers unless they HAVE to be . When they come back for the Follow Up , things can get awkward IF YOU IGNORED THEM .

Safety is of course important, but some "Safety Managers" can go overboard with it! Case in point: Years ago, I had a job with a Hospital Equipment manufacturer. Our SM had his own "rules" that exceeded OSHA, MSHA, and NIOSH standards combined! My first day there the first thing I had to do was sit with him for a "Safety Orientation". Bear in mind I had already spent thirty or more years in a "Manufacturing Environment" and wasn't still wet behind the ears. At one point he told me I was to fill out an "Accident Report" for a paper cut! I laughed but he was serious! He had a habit of coming around and gigging people for the tiniest thing. One day I was testing out a method of etching galvanized steel to keep paint from coming off it. Trick I learned in High School metal shop was to use White Vinegar to take the oil off. I had bought a bottle of it with my own money, and he asked me if I had a MSDS for it (Material Safety Data Sheet)! Um, no, the grocery store doesn't provide those. He started going on about how I had to contact the manufacturer and get one! I asked him if he had a MSDS for all the drinks in the breakroom vending machines? I thought he was going to have a stroke! I was quietly pleased when sometime later we were bought out by a MUCH larger company and he and the "HR Witch" (that's another story) were the first to be let go!

The sump on the Perkins is heavy and strong because the engine is a stressed member when its in the tractor, there is no chassie, the front axle tombstone hangs on the front of the engine along with the front axle while the engine hangs on the gearbox bell houseing, now imagine a massive weight on the back of the tractor trying to lift gearbox, engine and front axle of the ground, that's why your sump and engine casting are so heavy and strong.

Yes, they are and what's worse is they poach each other's clients hoping the person they approach doesn't know they are already being served and what month of expiration. I was very upset when a tradie came by and did our extinguishers while I was out and they didn't need doing for almost half a year! I gave them an ear full, but they wouldn't budge because the work had been done. I made a big sign above the extinguishers indicating the preferred maintenance company and NO ONE else!

The UK is developing an H&S mindset everywhere that apart from hindering is actually working. People now think before starting anything and its paying dividends, often in irradicating wasted time.
@gregculverwell3 ай бұрын
@@clivewilliams3661 I thinks so. While I'm South African, I still have family in the UK and visit from time to time. I can't wait to leave due to the oppressive atmosphere. I used to work for a large French multinational doing project management. On one project I was doing (64 million USD ) , the company was simultaneously doing a very similar project in the UK. We were progressing at twice the pace and at about 30% of the cost. They sent the UK project manager out to see how it was that were doing it soon much better. After spending days with him, I realised that he was doing the best anyone could under the circumstances. His hands were completely tied by endless bureaucracy, box ticking, obsession with irrelevant details and the dreaded H&S. Afterwards I was contacted by head office in France for feedback and I explained my observations. BTW we were not blind to safety - the project took 2.5 million man hours and was completed without a single lost time injury. We took rational precautions. It is no surprise to me that the UK is completely incapable of of delivering anything on time or on budget... not event close to.

The vast majority of FPOs are nice people and not out to find unnecessary faults. I suggested to Lee many moons ago that he should arrange a visit from the FPO to give a better idea of how to best deal with means of escape and fire prevention. It all makes sense because in the event of a fire incurring , a building that meets with FPO 'approval' will have an easier time with the insurers, as will having compiled a Fire Risk Assessment. That is of course, not withstanding the potential for saving life. The FPO service is free and worth having, why wouldn't you want to use it?

Agree. I work for a chemical company with quite a few nasties on site and we, quite regularly, get visits from the Fire and Rescue Service. They are not interested in ‘catching us out’, just working out if something ever did happen, what they can best do in the situation. They like to keep their copy of our building plans and our storage layout up to date. Seems like very sensible prep to me! It works well when both sides are open and honest with each other and work together. It’s in our interests to be good neighbours, and if anything did happen, to have minimal implications so we can carry on with our business as quickly as possible. Lots of businesses close after a major incident, if you can prevent or minimise anything, you are more likely to stay open and keep your jobs. Same with the HSE. In 30 years with never had any trouble with them and we don’t get any ‘health and safety gone mad’ issues with them at all. We’ve never been expected or pressured to put anything in place, and everything that we do have, has been put in place by us, because we think it is the right response to a risk or near miss experience.
