In this video, Steve with Upstart Epoxy demonstrates how to properly perform a seal coat versus a flood coat. When preparing to flood a piece that you were working on it is common to seal the surface of your piece so that no imperfections appear. If there are deep divots or holes within the surface that you were working on it is likely that in order to successfully achieve a flood coat you may have to perform multiple seal coats. We have had experiences where one flood coat is all it took and we have had experiences where it’s taken multiple so in this video we demonstrate how to go about doing it and how to finish the backside of the piece post-flood coat.

Looks amazing! I'm doing my first river table, a small coffee table. I want to finish it with a flood coat so my kids don't ruin the wood. I had originally planned on a chamfered edge but I'm thinking I need to go with a rounded edge based on the video here.

Hey there 👋. Wondering what grit you sand the table with before your initial seal coat. Excellent video btw! Thanks.

I realize this video was 2 years ago, but a question- could you use sanding sealer first as a sealant for a first coat? Thanks I like the tutorial👍

Good video! Did you sand the edges of the board before the seal coat?

So is the flood coat only on one side and then mineral oil on the other?

How do you prevent the underside edges from getting drip marks that stick. That’s my problem.

In this thickness, if we get micro bubble air pocket , because usually because of dirt silicone i need to sand it off with 220 or 320 , so in that case the micro air pockets gets filled by resin/ sand dust .. Can we cut those off on this thicker layer

The stir stick itself controversialy if wood, causes bubbles, so they say, so silicone stir stick/spatula. Closer to 8 ounces is when they say/recommend a drill to eliminate unmixed resin. Hope to try mica powders someday, awesome project.

That actually makes a ton of sense. If you drilled carefully, thr bubbles just can't come from nowhere They'd have to be introduced by folding essentially, but for a large batch, using a large wood stir stick, depending on thr epoxy viscosity, I could see a ton of bubbles coming out

Before pouring your seal coat, how did you prep the board? Sand to 320 grit? Did you wipe off sand dust with water?

So you sealed fron side with epoxy and back side with oil. And that wont be a problem cause both sides are not sealed same?

Do you use walrus oil on a table top that is totally sealed with with epoxy or would that be a waste since the epoxy wouldn’t absorb it - I have been using walrus furniture finish on wood pieces and love it. Have a epoxy writer desk from blue stained pine wondering about a cost of walrus when flood coat is set up thanks
@upstartepoxy4804
@upstartepoxy4804 3 ай бұрын
If the table is already sealed, there is no need to apply walrus oil. It won't absorb through the epoxy since it creates a seal.

How does the oil get to the wood if you have poured a couple of flood coats?
@oldkingcrow777
@oldkingcrow777 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't. Any finish you put on the epoxy is being applied to the epoxy, not the wood unless the wood is exposed. I don't know how I feel about flood coats. I think I prefer the surface having both wood and epoxy

Beautiful job- one question and perhaps I’m missing something- you mentioned 1 oz/SF for the seal coat and used 28 oz. The workpiece doesn’t look like it’s close to 28 SF. Is there some measurement or calculation that I missed?

If you redo before it is completely cured…. Let’s say, 12 hours do you still need to sand?
