I picked up on this when I started learning Spanish a long time ago. (I didn´t know it was called chunks). It only seemed logical to me that if you made up sentences used every day all you had to do was substitute the key words each time relevant to the situation. It is also fun to devise loads of sentences to write down and you will soon have a great deal of Spanish on the tip of your tongue. Two warnings 1. It can become addictive (you will be spending a lot of subconscious time thinking up things to say) and 2. You must of course be able to understand what is being said to you, it´s not a one-way conversation.

I have been trying to effectively learn Spanish for about 2 years while living in Mexico. I think my vocabulary is more than enough. but I absolutely struggle with context. Things like who went or when did they go. Did they go before, today, they are going now, or are they going in the future. As such, I find that if I venture to far away from the phrases I know, I sound like a.... Pues, no importa... I find your statement about trying to invent sentences to be 100% correct. That is how I started and still mostly communicate. There is one very large exception to this. I no longer even think about common sayings and phrases (Chunks if you will). when I hear them or am replying using one there is zero translation happening in by mind al chile. Here are a few examples that I can think of off the top of my head. Hola, Como estas, Bien, Y tu? Como estas?, Que haces, Que bueno, Que onda, Que tal, Ontas, Tengo hambre, tienes hambre, Me gustaria, Quiero, Quiero (algo), Quieres (algo), A donde vas (va, vamos, voy) estoy cansado or just cansado, Estas cansada or just cansada, and I will add my girlfriends favorite "que tienes?" if you know 😂😂😂😂 if you don't know Lo siento. But trust Spring Spanish to teach you. Side note related to trust. Pues, actually it is related to my girlfriend and the "chunks" I have learned from her. Y QUE?? , Entonces?? , Tienes confianza en mi??? 😲😲💀💀😂😂😂😂 Full discloser I have only watched 4 :44 minutes of the introduction to chunks. However, it was at this point that as someone that never comments I felt compelled to comment. The extreme use of Yo is just hitting me wrong. No one I know talks like that. This is especially true for many of the examples that were provided. Example: Creo que me estoy explicando correctamente. Notice the chunk is Creo que or even Creo Que me. The chunk is not Yo creo que. The yo is implied with creo. Creo alone is believe but once que is add creo que tengo hambre it changes to I think or if you would like I believe. I think I am bothered because this appears to a wonderful concept that seems to align with how I am already learning to speak but at the same time if the chunks are wrong or overly structured this system may not only not work but could set me backwards by saying things like "yo tengo" instead of "tengo". example: while sitting in the park a stray soccer ball is about to go into traffic and you quick grab the ball saving it for going into traffic. At this point you could stand up triumphally and yell TENGO indicating you stopped the ball from going into traffic and you have the ball. Also, if when you save the ball no one is there but later a boy is walking around looking for something and he tells you that he is looking for is soccer ball. it would be very natural to simply say tengo and hand the boy is ball. in either scenario Yo is not used. Maybe you can easily set me straight by telling me I need to watch more or since I am learning I don't know what I'm talking about but I am living in Tijuana and I know enough to know when something doesn't seem correct and I am heavily motivated to find a system that will actually work. Thank you for letting my ramble. maybe I should post a condensed version. .

I think it’s because anytime you first learn a language, you learn the really super formal version of it first so that you can understand the grammar. Saying ‘ Tengo Hambre’ for someone who doesn’t know that ‘ tengo’ is the conjugation for ‘ yo’ is dangerous in learning as it can make them take longer to understand. It’s easier to drop to ‘ slang’ /informal/ normal speaking after understanding what’s being implied. And yeah as you know later in the video they don’t use ‘ yo’ as often. But these videos aren’t always for people with a ton of experience, some people are coming here with almost 0 background and are learning tips for how to learn later and such.

When saying "I think that" or "I believe that," isn't it correct to leave out "Yo" most of the time, except when you need it for emphasis? Put another way, how often do you say, "Yo creo que" vs simply, "Creo que?" Gracias!
@alibobsmarland95722 жыл бұрын
Do you have to use the yo in the sentences yo Creo que and yo no tengo or do you have to use it for emphasis?
@MauraSpringSpanish2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! You don't have to but, at least in those examples, it doesn't even create emphasis. So, do as you please with that "yo" knowing it won't make any difference. Spanish, right? haha. =)=)=)

Your channel is excellent... how about a smidge of focus on business Mexican? A colleague recently got transferred from Mexico HQ to England (EMEA)HQ and I found your channel to better understand Mexican culture and language, whilst I'd be very (very very) happy to flirt with her. In a business environment, it's inappropriate and respect and consideration for her culture is paramount. Thank you for your channel efforts. You are all estrella

¡Gracias, Maura! Y si no, ¿Por qué no? ¡Gracias de nuevo! 😊
@MauraSpringSpanish2 жыл бұрын
¡Holis! =)=)=)
@TomRNZ2 жыл бұрын
Gracias.
@MauraSpringSpanish2 жыл бұрын
@@TomRNZ ¡Para nada tonto! =)=)=)

I hate the word chunks so much. It literally makes me think of vomit every time it's said because probably the only other time I hear chunks used (in plural form) is to say blow chunks, which means to throw up. I wish there was another word for this term lol.
