Back in the day Patti Labelle was in a play in New York with Al Green called "Your Arms To Short To Box With God." I was in a club right next door to the venue and didn't know that she was in this play. My friends and I were leaving the club, walked outside into a mob of people. When Patti Labelle stepped outside people went crazy!! Her limousine was waiting for her. I happened to be standing right next to it. When I saw coming near me I asked her for an autograph which she gave with a big smile and she shook my hand!! A one in a million sanger!!

He didn't know she was singing back then, when everyone wanted to take a picture with her, didn't she start with the blue bells and was called The sweetheart of the apollo, and one back in 1963, with you'll Never Walk alone, and have they ever stop singing, or she stopped singing, and then they had that big hit with Lady marmalade, and what can I do for you, and all those good songs from the group labelle, when they drop the bluebells to labelle, so what the hell could he be talking about, that was in the 60th and in the 70s, she didn't go solo until 77, with you are my friend, and we recorded it over the rainbow, which was another song she did with the blue bells, back in 1966

What I love most of all about you is this: you honestly did not know her music though you knew her name & it’s easy to apply one’s biases to subjective art forms like singing but where credit is due, you give it & so far everything you’ve given Patti LaBelle is not only truth from emotions but facts from a technical perspective. Respect, man. We appreciate you.

Love your reaction to Patti!! Words can't express how talented she is. She's a vocal phenom, absolutely world class. This performance brought me to tears. I've never heard a more powerful voice in pop music . And her voice is so much more than power

I remember being outside in large amphitheaters and she would walk away from the mic and you could still hear her clear as a whistle. She is the Godmothet just like James Brown was the Godfather. This title is above any earthly king or queen throne. She is divine above any queen!

Your appreciation and profound respect for her vocal brilliance made this a treat to watch again and again. I can see you were just as much in awe as we all were watching this. It’s hard enough to do an Aretha song and magnify that times 1000 to do this in front of the Queen herself.

you're a young guy...so dont feel weird or bad about not keeping up with Patti LaBelle. You're talking about a woman who sang on the old rock n roll circuit in the very early 60s, in Philly, with the likes of Annette Funicello and Dee Dee Sharpe and Lesley Gore and the Ronettes, before she morphed another girl group into the BlueBelles, and they became VERY famous for their appearances at the Apollo Theater as well as the other great performance venues known on what was called "the chitlun' circuit". She's lived 5 lifetimes already...you're on your first one. Now, if you think this performance was incredible, I would encourage you to search her LIVE AID performances, in 1985...it was a huge hunger benefit, to raise money for the famine that a number of African countries, were suffering and dying from...the concert was at the old John F Kennedy Stadium. She did a version of "Imagine" that will make you cry, as well as "Forever Young" and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". one of my great regrets in life, is that I never got the chance to see Aretha Franklin, live in concert. Ive seen some of the greats, like Nina Simone, Eartha Kitt, Roberta Flack, Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick, Grace Jones, Phyllis Hyman and yes, even Patti LaBelle, who Ive seen so many times, Ive lost count of how many times. And when she gave us that vocal-intro walking out on stage, singing the first line, as the crowd burst into a LOUD cheer...they did that in recognition of the fact, that NO ONE had bothered to touch that song, sang in its original key, before. So, there you have an all time great like Patti singing it...and it felt like the crowd was saying "oh, wait!...now if ANYONE can sing this the way its supposed to be sung, its her". Ive seen this footage a few times, and I always get the feeling that Patti, from the start of the song, was trying to sort out how comfortable she wanted to be, before settling on ripping into it, because thats just who she is. Anything less than what she gave, would NOT have been who she really is.
