That’s her heartbeat right before she sings “Wildest Dreams.” She also does this in “You’re Losing Me.” “You’re Losing Me” is one of her top 5 songs, IMO. It’s just beautiful & heartbreakingly soul crushing!

Ah I just wrote that comment myself, I am so fed up fighting with swifties who mistake her strain then for emotion and complain about Taylor´s versions. She always sound beautiful regardless, but she is a much more technical singer now. Also very few artists can move around and still sound so good.

Something so evident from her vocals from the original 1989 to Reputation was how she was more open with her vocals and especially her belts. It all sounds so effortless, especially on the tour while it is very clear on the 1989 tour she was struggling. I will day on the Speak Now tour her vocals were amazing but for Red and 1989 it's clear her ED was making it harder for her to belt.

I love how you appreciate her vocals even when they aren’t perfect. Taylor herself has never claimed to be a vocalist and has said that singing is just a vehicle for telling her stories. She has been so maligned over the years for being a “bad” singer and that’s clearly false. She is the most prominent voice on the stage because her M.O. is for her words to be heard. I love the clarity of her sound and that she doesn’t vocal doodle all over the melody to be stylish. She is there to make you feel those words.

Yeah! She improved a lot over the year. Her voice is more stable and her low register is rich and well place. Also, she is more creative vocally now. She's not the greatest vocalists but she's a good singer with a beautiful tone. Taylor is a singer who knows who to use her voice and what she is capable of.

Long time lurker, I think it's my first time commenting... seeing your react to Taylor now is great as you get to comment first hand on her vocal evolution. Especially when you notice things that people like me who have been listening to her for years might overlook. She's clearly worked hard on improving her vocal performances over the years and it's so cool to see you acknowledge that when you do these reactions.

I love how you pointed out the fact that the vocal style so many people love is just…not good for the longevity of someone’s vocal performance. I can appreciate the gritty vocals and high-tension sound, but you are SO right about the strain on someone’s voice. I had never connected her change to a deliberate choice to prioritize health and vocal longevity over ‘sounding good’ to the inexperienced ear, but that really must be what she did. I think you’re just too on-the-nose to be wrong about that. Also, as a (…mostly former) singer, performances like this make me wince when I hear the strain. I used to sing really well, but I had, uh…this is going to sound fake, but whatever. In sixth grade, I caught strep throat early in the year. My mom never made me finish my antibiotics or sanitize my retainer, so…I KEPT catching strep. Ended up getting diagnosed over a dozen separate times, missing 32 days of school total (some were for other illnesses-bronchitis, laryngitis, tonsillitis, stuff connected to the Endless Strep). I can sing still, but…not like I could. 😬 And that makes me hyper aware of how singing uses your body like an instrument. Like, hell yeah, I LOVE when people shred a fiddle so hard half the hairs in the bow split. But you can replace a violin bow. You can’t do that with shredded vocal chords. I want to hear Taylor sing for decades to come. I think she’s making incredibly smart choices to that end, and I REALLY love you calling them out. …tiny bit frustrated by those missing the point and saying they love this performance anyway and think it’s her best vocals. She’s a pathological people pleaser, y’all. That’s the sound of her tearing her body apart for you. Like…yes, the sound is beautiful, but I’m glad she’s choosing her health over achieving this brutal sound. I think her recent sound-open, healthy-is just as gorgeous and infinitely smarter. (Not coming after anyone. I just feel like some viewers…missed the bit about longevity…) Also, side note, I’m always impressed she can sing like that sitting down. I have a curved spine and could never find a sitting posture that didn’t compress my diaphragm.

Her vocal evolution from the first album until now is amazing. This was the tour after 1989's original release and the vocals are so much better now, even though I liked them before too. First tour to this one was also an evolution. Live and learn and all that. :) I can't sing at all, so I'm just happy some people do, but I'm amazed at how even professional singers can develop the voice they do have and become very skilled and sound sooooo good. Really fascinating! 5SOS is another example. They all sing, but they do have one main singer and to me it was not outstanding when they first came out. After a few years it's a whole other game and they can do very different songs as he and the rest can handle singing more demanding songs. Very cool. Love them now.

It’s so true what you said about the voice of Taylor on the concerts is very upfront and yes you can hear sometimes if she’s more tired or in better condition. And I value that because she’s singing live, everything. Also this performance is amazing, such great range low and high and head voice haha

Yeah, when you’re there in person, the speakers are so loud to the point you can tell it apart. Her mic’s volume is much louder than the band’s instruments and the backing track, etc., It’s her voice all the same, but there’s no mistaking what’s live and what’s studio. And her mic is ON! And Taylor genuinely has so much fun, I love her live performances so much because you can feel the energy in her voice. I don’t even listen to the studio Cruel Summer anymore, it’s the Live Eras Tour Cruel Summer for me. And everyone agrees that Illicit Affairs, for example, is a hundred times better than the studio version; and when we get a live Eras album, they’ll be listening to that instead. If concerts are the place for the audience to sing their hearts out without fear of making mistakes and sounding terrible (‘cause no one there, except for the phone’s microphone, can hear you), it’s Taylor’s place for her to just go all out and have fun while doing it.

She’s done so much work on her voice that’s really paying off on the Eras tour. And I think this performance was recorded fairly late in the 1989 world tour, so her voice had to be tired along with the ED issues that were causing issues back then. Even with all that, it was an incredible performance but it’s good to hear from a professional’s standpoint the vocal chord damage certain habits could cause. Also nice to hear your comments on her putting her vocals front and center instead of relying too much on her great backup singers. As you probably noticed in the documentary, Taylor comments indirectly on her vocals in saying she knows that without her songwriting/storytelling skills she wouldn’t be here.

@@FC-qb9wp I agree that she’s a great and underrated vocalist. No disrespect was intended - I’m a big fan. In fact, to me it feels wrong not to honor how much she’s worked on her vocals over the years to be able to do what she does now. Her voice as a songwriter and a singer is unique, and it likely takes impressive breath control to sing her songs - especially with all the choreography in the Eras tour.

Hailey Williams is now selling a t -shirt with her spinal xrays on it; she damaged her neck head banging. She was on the Tonight Show, releasing an album some weeks ago; she's done therapy so she can move; and insists she needs to head bang in the concerts. She and Taylor both did that a lot in concert, but with Taylor it is more of an accent/hair flip thing.

I don’t think anyone has mentioned that she was struggling with an eating disorder during the original, which she talks about seriously affecting her performances (she talks about this is the Miss America documentary). The tension you point out connects to what was going on with her. Between her training and being able to get to a healthier place is so key to how amazing her vocals sound now!
