I bought my first racing outfit in 1977, it had a 750cc Norton Commando engine, 10in Mini wheels side and rear, and a 16in spoked m/c front wheel with a 3in wide flat profile tyre. I modified it to Mini wheels all round for the next year. The year after that I bought a 650cc BSA A65 outfit, I then bought a BSA A70 engine for it. This was a 750cc engine BSA made for export only, they only built 300, and they all went to the US, this one came back to the UK, and the guy I bought it off was using it in a solo grass-track machine. At the time I was driving trucks to and from continental Europe, so I could never guarantee being back for a race meeting. A local car repair shop owner used to turn up at a lot of races as he was a friend of my passengers. One day, while I was abroad, he and my passenger took my outfit to a practice day at Mallory Park, and Cliff had a go at riding it. In 1983 he ended up winning the first F2 sidecar TT. So my claim to fame is, a future TT winner had his first experience on my outfit. My passenger, Kev Morgan was a small guy, about 5ft4in, and about 9 stone(126lb). Sadly he lost his life along with his driver Bill Currie in practice for the 2011 TT.

I lived on the Island for many years. Back in the mists of time, Honda sent two oval pistoned factory special machines. These were ridden by two top riders of the time - Fogarty and Hislop and the top single seaters were doing @120mph laps. At the time it was mooted how people did not think anyone would be going faster. Today the very top riders are doing 135mph laps. But here is the thing. The sidecars are now lapping at that 120mph lap time. Absolutely staggering stuff.
@alexandrorocca71422 жыл бұрын
Even with a regular motorcycle, the passenger can be very influential when you do a curve. Inexperienced passengers who don't know that the bike has to lean quite far at a higher speed sometimes try to counterbalance the weight and suddenly the bike straightens up and drives straight instead of cornering. It can be quite terrifying, that's why you should tell your newbie passenger to stay relaxed and enjoy the view.
@Catch_me_if_you_can_6662 жыл бұрын
That's why I don't take passengers on the back anymore.There are the ones feeling unsafe when I lean the bike and they start leaning in the opposit way.And than their are the ones that don't want to show their fear and they lean with you...but sometimes so far the centre of gravity reaches dangerous levels, almost lowsiding the bike.I ride sportsbikes, so the suspension can start feeling wobbly when I corner with a lot of weight on the back.Sportsbikes aren't made to take passengers, passengers are sitting quite high and pretty far to the back of the bike and the stiff suspension gets quite compressed so the bike isn't dampening bumps very well when taking corners under leaningangle.

I lived in the Isle Of Man in the early 70s, just a few houses from the track on Brae Hill. If you think it's dangerous now, back then it was a mass start so at the beginning of the race they all came over the crest of the hill at the same time. The noise was ferocious!

We become hermits at TT as the roads are crazy, not just for the races but for the amount of people that are over to see them, just becomes dangerous. This year was the first time we went to watch the race, we went to the grandstand and watched the Superbikes in the first race, and it was terrifying, we stayed for one lap and that was enough for us, glad we didn't stay for the second race of the day, the sidecars, as there was an accident one mile into the race where one died instantly and the other wasn't great, friend lives right there and saw it happen and is now completely traumatised as they had horrific injuries. Honestly, yes it was thrilling to watch but not at the risk of being traumatised. I'll stick to watching highlights on youtube, and watching the news for updates. Love seeing people learning about the TT though :)

Which tickets have a five year waiting list ?
@chrisshelley30272 жыл бұрын
@@davecooper3238 I believe that spectator tickets have a five year waiting list due to safety reasons, they don't want so many people attending that it increases the number of people watching that riders feel restricted and unable to race properly, I have heard this from several different sides, I have never attended myself, but I know many who have and the number of spectators is limited apparently due to safety reasons, the organisers don't want racing stopped as this may put restrictions in future years, it's common sense really, keeping it as safe as possible will help with keeping the race going without the risk of draconian measures that prevent the event from making a loss financially and making the event untenable for future years.

@@chrisshelley3027 Some people appear to be pulling your leg. The Isle of Man has been something of a family holiday destination. I have been over for the TT, Southern 100 & Manx GP. I have stayed with a distant relation. One of my uncles was a Manx man. Over the years I have known riders, officials etc. But most of all there is no such thing as a TT ticket. There could be waiting lists for some grandstand tickets. But apart from that if you are on the island as a visitor or resident you either watch the racing somewhere round the nearly 38 mile circuit or you don’t. Someone has been really pulling your leg or I suppose it could be someone repeating what they have heard not realising it’s just not true.

There are quite a few females racing as passengers & my husband says he finds female passengers are smoother in their position changes than men. He had to race with male passengers when I was pregnant. There are also a couple of all female teams that mix it with the best of the men. We have raced all over Australia & in New Zealand but although we have been to the IOM TT races several times as pit crew for friends who were racing my husband said no to racing at the IOM due to the huge financial outlay required & the logistics of getting our outfit & equipment to the IOM.

A traditional combination of bike and sidecar is two separate units, these are a single unit. However a traditional combo can never have the sidecar removed and riden as a solo as the frame of the bike twists over a long time. As I once discovered on buying a bike blind over the phone, it was cheap, I went to collect and payed the money, as I wheeled it to the road I looked behind and it was leaving two distinct tyre tracks on the grass, "oh, f**k" I thought, that explained the price. Just as well it was bought for spares but the ride home was interesting.

With the best will in the world, it's time that this race was stopped. Over the years too many people have died, when you look at all other motor racing like formula one and other racing of that calibre, because of safety race courses have evolved to take into account the rise in power of the machines. The TT race is still run on normal roads but the bikes have become much much more powerful. Travelling at around 200 mph if they get it wrong there is no escape, hitting a brick wall at that speed is certain death, on a formula one course they usually slide onto a wide flat area at the side of the track, usually walking away with possible scrubs and bruises.
