Nigerians, yesterday, took to X, formerly twitter, to demand the release of a lady, Chioma Egodi, allegedly arrested by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on the order of Erisco Food, over her honest opinion on its product.
The lady had on September 17, taken to Facebook after buying the product to give a review of what she discovered. She wrote: “I went to buy tin tomatoes yesterday that I will use to make stew. I didn’t see Gino and Sonia.
“So, I decided to buy this one. When I opened it, I decided to taste it. Omo! Sugar was just too much. Haaa, Biko let me know if you have used this tin tomato before because this is an Ike gwuru situation.”

Dont forget that Nigeria already has a big issue with diabetes. So many millions suffering from it. Because there is too much sugar in the local products. The bread, the soft drinks etc.

Mr Eric is heartless and unwise. This will damage his business more. I have never used this product before and I will never use it and no body in i know will ever use it. For Mr Eric to react this way, there is something fishy about their products which am calling on NAFDAC, SON and other regulatory bodies on food production to inspect their production to see if they are compliance or not.

The lady didn't do anything wrong. She shared her experience and the company should have dealt with it differently. I don't understand why it is so easy to arrest someone when the issue is not criminal. Yeni, well said. Good companies should be happy to receive feedback.

People are not saying this story completely. In her comments section, one Blessing Okeke said “Chioma Egodi Jnr ,Stop spoiling my brother's product if don't like it use another one than bring it on social media or call the customer service Erisco FoodsLtd” and she replied saying “Blessing Okeke help me advise your brother to stop ki***ing people with his product, yesterday was my first time of using and its pure sugar. Tueh!” That’s where the problem came from. I personally feel bad for her because of how a casual post changed her life for the worse, but these are the facts.

The Chioma lady was either ignorantly reckless by shooting her mouth off on social media rather than contacting the company, NAFDAC, SON, FCCPC or she willfully defamed the company. She should have read the composition of the ingredients of the product because if she did, she would have seen that sugar is included in the mix hence the product is tomato mix not tomato paste. She simply assumed that canned or tinned tomato only comes in paste form or that's the form that she is familiar worth.

If other people feel differently they can continue buying the product. The company have just put themself out of business now anyway because thousands are boycotting it. If you weaponize the law to incriminate an individual and have their freedom taken away from them you deserve what's coming to you. This issue is even beyond Nigeria now. People in U.S, UK, Canada and elsewhere are saying its wrong.

Sincerely speaking I hated Erisco tomato paste.The coloring in it is not good for health.This has been for so many years.I don’t know if the tomato paste was mixed with something else.Using that tomato paste is sincerely a waste of money.Very very low quality tomato paste.

I agree with you. The colour is horrible in food and that’s why I stopped using it back then. Unfortunately most companies in Nigeria don’t have platforms for customers to pen down review and that’s why they continued to produce such horrible tomato paste. I am not taking sides with anyone but this is the fact from my own experience

One way to bring this man down, take one tin sample to the lab, and match the content against what is written on it. But the sugar content in the tomato paste versus what is on the label. I'm predicting it will fail all tests, if this lady and her lawyers go through this case correctly, this will be a basis to bring out all the bad things happening in the food industry.

First of all, isn’t there freedom of expression in Nigeria? Arresting someone for voicing their opinion on a product is a serious violation of the lady’s fundamental human rights! They have no right whatsoever to have done what they did. Even if she was paid to do so, the lady would not be the one to be arrested. The paying saboteur company would be the one to be charged! Many of you have called out Banks, Telcos, Jumia, Konga, Amazon in a very bad way, did they arrest you. I saw that part of her post which was sad but then Erisco would have utilized that post in a good way even turning Chioma into an ambassador. It is bullying. Call it what it is. Erisco had no reason to arrest her. Sue her? Yes, but not arrest her. The arrogance is too much.

If the commander should have advised the CEO to file for defamation of character if he wanted to go to court and let court decide. . If I was Erisco Foods, this is an opportunity for public relations promotion. However, I’m afraid to be devils advocate care especially as she is an expectant mother, she did at one point declare in writing that the product pai people and should be stopped. This is unacceptable and set off the subsequent arrest and allegation of prosecution. I am glad she is released but she should be careful with what she says in the future as freedom of speech is ideal but the type of speech being freely expressed could be questionable. Love you ladies.

I watched what the man had to say and as someone trying to run a business in this harsh terrain I feel for him... most of us are just inherently frustrated and would just tend to want to cater to the seemingly weaker one in an altercation especially if it's rich vs poor... many times poor people are wrong and insufferable... defamation of character is bad (even if that's not the term to refer to making false claims on a business) many of us are saying we want to go to America... behaviors like this will put you in trouble in a litigious society.... that product had sugar and it's on it ... and it's a different kind of tin tomato with different purposes...

Products such as this are made in batches. So slightest variations in formula or an ingredient. Can lead to product variations. So call up the batch and verify. Suppose that woman died in police custody; tomato 🍅 for red well well for the company.

Nigeria and palava. Customers reviews are actively pursued by customers and we give plain, frank reviews everytime! But it's done by seller sending you a review survey. Anyways, as a lesson, discussing it on social media seems to be the problem here. That is a NO NO anywhere. You cannot do that. You'll land in some impossible legal slams. Know before you act.

Na which universe product review is only controlled via surveys. Go KZbin and type any product of your choice and add review to it. You go enough product reviews of every product imaginable under the sun. Go any app store and pick an app and you'll see hundreds of reviews alongside. Go to any website on Google, scroll down to the bottom of the website, you'll see enough customer reviews. Are you kidding me with this thing you just typed.

That is totally unacceptable especially when you don't have proof. And did you notice the ladies never called any brand name while they were making comments on products they tried once and had issues with it? I am not taking the popular side on this. This is the reason for my stand 1. Is chioma a certified product reviewer? If yes, howmany products has she reviewed? Because I heard she deals in children's cloths 2. She claims the tomotoe paste has too much sugar. What is too much sugar? If the paste is Nafdac aprroved, then the quantity of sugar in the paste maynot be above the norm. Erisco may chose to make their product more sugary than other tomotoe paste as their identity 3. She claims the paste is killing people. She may have to provide real prove of the people that the paste is directly responsible for their death. If she cannot defend all these, she will be in real trouble in the law court

So if a customer purchases a product from Bisi store, then goes online to take advantage of huge fan base to give a negative review, claiming her products are fake. Bisi then gets an intel that this customer was paid to do so by other competitors. Would Bisi not result to some kind of arrest first considering the fact that most Nigerians have mob mentality which would damage her brand before even finding out the truth? Recently a famous blogger who has a legal case against him said he hadn’t any money so if he is losses, he would still not pay for damages. We quick to jungle justice in Nigeria. It shouldn’t have ever reached that point. You presenters ain’t objective. The main issue is not the main post but the comments. She said Erisco products ‘keel’ people. The company actually engaged her but she refused to respond. She was defaming the brand. Let be honest here. The other problem is Erisco responded very wrongly. They could actually have publicized this in their favour (which is why it’s good for company to hire good PR). The brand is actually ok. She bought tomatoe mix and not tomato paste. Chioma always very wrong unfortunately, we are sentimental. If her comments actually ‘keel’ the Erisco brand, do we understand how many families will be affected negatively. Nafdac approved the product, even reaffirm the product is safe. Moyo was right that Erisco PR strategy is so wrong and very bad

People need to know how to use the social media. It is a public corridor. You can’t just destroy a brand because of your non scientific method or research certificate. She can only sue them if she has research proofs. She should have reported the case to regulatory authorities. The company can’t arrest nafdac if they said so. You can’t say anything anyhow.
