I am an American. I spent two weeks in Honduras in Central America and one night I was hanging out with some locals. A young man pulled out an old beat up guitar and strted playing Dream On perfectly. He did not know how to pronounce the English lyrics - so I started singing. A HUGE crowd gathered in a mountain village of Honduras as we - two strangers - connected through this beautiful song. It was sublime.

I love Lex's comparison to an alarm clock at the end of the song. I'm not sure if that's what Aerosmith intended, but it makes perfect sense. Music can speak without words and Lex has a great talent picking up on things like that. Glad you both enjoyed this classic.

I agree, she's quite intuitive and she often quickly recognizes what a producer was trying to do by approaching something this way or that. And as for this example, things like that are generally intentional, and I seem to remember Tyler saying at the time it was released that it was an alarm. Regardless, most other artists I know learned over time that that the difference between so-called good and bad artists isn't how much talent they might have inside them, but how many ways they find to let it out. That creative choice to end the song that way is the kind of next-level layer of meaning that a less experienced band or producer misses as an opportunity. It's what makes the great people so great--they are doing so much more--and it's also why every one of us always has room to grow.

Insightful reaction, guys! A quick little story...Aerosmith played a fund raising concert for my fledgling private elementary school, and my pops was involved in the booking. It was 1974 for the tour of their second album "Get Your Wings." Some of my mates and myself got to go backstage and greet them before the show. They couldn't have been nicer; especially Steven Tyler who gave us high fives and a minute or two of small talk. Then watched them from up front. I was 10 at the time and will never, ever forget it & thought I'd share. Cheers!

Right with you there. I "like" Aerosmith but never really got into them, but this song has great power and meaning - that may be it too - many of their songs are superficial and shallow about sex, drugs and rock n roll and that's all well and good, but there's not much to sink you teeth into. This one just hits different. Also his singing is more subdued and you hear more of his range instead of the constant high, head screams he is famous for. Here, he only uses his scream to accentuate at the end and I think (and Lex certainly agrees!) that makes the switch to the high, power scream much more impactful.

Possibly he saw that the Rolling Stones were touring into their 50s at that time and started using singing exercises to conserve his voice and sing more from his diaphragm.

First time during the Get a Grip tour and then just a few years ago when they and Alice Cooper performed on the same outdoor show at Odderøya in Kristiansand. In my youth we had what we called keg parties. On the beach huge bon fire under 200 people huge speakers playing this music ! Yeah we had lots of beer some spirts maybe few other fun things ? This song came out in 1973 both on the album at 4:26 long which is what you did (the good one) and a single that was shortened to 3:25 for radio stations that often resisted anything over 3:30 long. I listened to and liked it for years before finding out it was Aerosmith. Today I could just search the Net and find out all about the song and the group and every member of the group. But then, if the DJ didn't tell us very clearly before and after, we wouldn't know. The neat thing about your reaction is that even now, after my listening to it these many years, I'm getting more out of it because of you. Lexi's observation that (almost) the whole thing sounds like an intro put words to my feelings about it building tension all through. And her thinking about the ending - "Time's up!" - was perfect. And as you both said, how unusual it is, is exactly why I love this song and why it never feels dated.
