Let’s be unbiased and fair. If the veilguard was actually good and targeted towards its normal fans that supported the previous games, it would’ve sold like crazy. You guys were the target audience, but not their old audience. If they don’t change, mass effect is going down the same hole.

It was so sad what they did to dragon age one of my favorite franchises ruined. The writing was so bad, they didn't give you much choices. You couldnt be an asshole or evil. Like thats what dragon age is about is the choices and the writing. I could either have a pack of warewolves rip a whole elf village apart or I could save everyone. When they wrote Dorians character in DAI I was like god damn this is good. Then I just felt like the writing in Veilguard was so bad. Makes me so sad man.
@trapsaltnburn
@trapsaltnburn 10 күн бұрын
The writing in Veilguard is definitely not up to par with the rest of the series. Something I really worried about when I saw the news David Gaider was leaving Bioware. He was (IIRC) the leader writer on all of the DA games through Inquisition (including Dorian, who is still one of my favorite characters), wrote the majority of the Dragon Age tie-in novels. Like he was the Dragon Age GUY. Veilguard just doesn't live up to it, even with some of the bits I've enjoyed.

You could _never_ be truly evil in _any_ Dragon Age game. I played them all, you could be a bit of a dick, but not really evil. Not like Fable or Kotor or BG3. Besides, the vast majority of players never do evil runs. The stats don’t lie, not enough people care about how evil you are allowed to be to make a difference.
@Lambwarrior

You could make evil choices you could kill the kid at red cliff you didn’t have to do all the circle stuff to save him. You had the choice with the anvil to turn dwarves into golems against their will I would say that’s pretty evil. I’m sure bulders gate 3 has better options and I get that but I mean dragon age origins is how old now and DAI is over ten years old.

I love the fact that is a 15min 26sec, come on guys give BioWare a chance video, because we don’t want to lose another legendary developer. But BioWare is not the same company that brought all those legendary games like the original baulder gate, star wars knight of the old republic, jade empire, the mass effect trilogy, and the original dragon age trilogy. Everyone on the creative side of those games left during anthem, and mass effect andromeda, so maybe BioWare should be shuttered before they tarnish memory of BioWare any further.

I have zero confidence in Bioware's ability to deliver an interesting Mass Effect 4. Companies are so scared of offending people now that they only seem capable of writing bland and uninteresting stories. There's no easy solution, either. People have to acknowledge that gaming is a multi-generational hobby. Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z have very real differences in the way they view "content". I really enjoyed parts of Veilguard, but much of it was watered down to the point of absurdity. You can almost see the writers going, "Ooh, no, we can't talk about that."

I think Vailguard's story is only "good" if you either haven't played past DA games or if you haven't played them recently. Some of Vailgaurd's writing is just a direct insult to DA's past. From Making all your dicisions from past games pointless by destroying all the lands you want to from DAO through Inquisition off screen, to having exactly 1 impactful choice in game, that really isn't THAT impactful. It's basically a big middle finger to OG DA fans. Good gameplay alone (which is also debatable) cannot save this game.

I honestly hope Bioware is shut down and its IP's sold to other studios. Everyone left in Bioware needs to be put on an industry blacklist to keep the taint from spreading any further, and I say this as an openly gay man who is genuinely angry at the portrayal of lgbt characters in the game. This wasn't representation, just a thinly veiled parody of how some people think about the gay community at large. Really sad when our own members are propagating this trash. Don't even get me started on the baby-fication of the story themes and outright removal of plot elements that would just be too adult to acknowledge, I am truly amazed they even were allowed to say the word death without a tutorial note mentioning that is is all pretend and for fun.

The conversation about ME4 brings up a position I've long taken. The Problem with ME did not start with Andromeda. It started with ME3. Everything starting with the latter half of ME3 was just awful from a writing standpoint and the endings failed in pretty much every way they could. Andromeda was, in and of itself, a reaction to how much of a mess ME3 made as they just couldn't really continue from the endings of ME3 so they made it take place in another galaxy with characters that left before the events at the end of ME3.

It’s funny how game companies seemingly only focus on the “modern gaming audience” and then are shocked when their games don’t sell. The “modern gaming audience” is a small market and it makes zero sense for companies to focus on pleasing them. Focus on making a good game that satisfies it’s actual player base and the game will gain steam. It’s pretty simple. And it’s been proven over and over at this point. It's really stupid that people consider gender identity and stuff like that to be political. It should just be a basic human right. It shouldn't be political. It should just be able to be in a game and be as normal as straight people or straight relationships without people pointing at it and bitching about it. People's right to exist is not political. Honestly I think calling it political is a gaslighting tactic brought on by bigots to try and dismiss it as propaganda rather than representation of everyone equally

@@OversoulGaming it's not about specific characters existing naturally in the game. (For some people maybe, but thats not the legitimate criticism here) It's about the heavy-handed way certain things are presented that feel inauthentic. In a medieval world constantly under threat of darkspawn, how and why are modern day social political issues a thing? There are so many other more pressing matters in a world like this I find it difficult to believe these issues would sprout up naturally on their own within this setting as we know it. Especially considering these things were never touched upon in previous games lore. Things like the surgeries. It would be an unnecessary and dangerous risk to take. Not to mention the technology and medical knowledge required wouldn't exist. Things like preferred pronouns. This is a modern day concern with only a small niche of people that has no natural place in a dark medieval fantasy setting where it would be so low on the totem pole of concerns it would never pop up. Multi-racial races. It's obvious the story comes from a modern day western dev team when every town looks like the American melting pot. It's obvious this is only done for forced representation and tokenism purposes. Things like this don't just happen naturally in a world where horse drawn carriage is the primary mode of transportation. There is more I could pick at, but the point is all of this and more are done because of an ideology that doesn't respect consistency and logic. It's immersion breaking and objectively makes any world of fiction worse.

Any game with that kind of developmental hell wasn't going to meet those kinds of sales expectations. Even if they had listened to fans or did everything 'right', there was no way this game was going to make $3 million sales in the first two months, not in this economy anyways. Aside from the alt-right straw man that is based purely on hate, all the other criticisms are correct. The gameplay is meh, the writing is anywhere from okay to embarrassing, forgettable story and companions. Not to mention neutered world building and pointless choices. The fact that there are no morally grey or evil options is disappointing and the lack of steamy romance also disappoints. It’s a forgettable, overly safe, pale shadow of what came before. I hate to admit it, it deserved to fail. It’s slop and is not worth wasting time on. Balder’s gate 3 makes DA:V’s entire existence pointless.

Andromeda was not very good with "meh" writing, Veilguard decided to play in the political mine field whether they wanted to or not with some characters, and you couldn't be "mean" to anyone which has been a part of the Dragon Age series. You literally cut the potential gamer pie in half with the political stuff before removing the "fun" for people who want to be jerks like they were in Mass Effect. How could you set an expectation over 2M sales when your own analysis should have recognized you set yourself up to fail. Personally, I never finished the last Dragon Age as I got bored and moved to other things. This never even caught my eye as "fun" or even interesting, and after Borderlands 3 being a disappointment I can wait for the game to prove itself before I would ever buy it. This one just ... fails what I am wanting in a game.

The problem with Dragon Age Veilguard isn't simply inconsistent writing. It's that it released AFTER Baldur's Gate 3, which is basically the type of game anyone who played and enjoyed earlier Bioware games, like DA: origins, KoTOR, etc, were all looking for. Veilguard wound up being a... Basically following the trend of Inquisition, which was kind of taking the franchise away from the old school RPG people who cared about the series... Well... Cared about. You can't have it both ways. You can't continue a long-standing IP with an established continuity where each followup game is a direct sequel of the previous title and create something both old fans and potential new players are happy with. You have to target one or the other. Dragon Age is not Final Fantasy. It isn't a completely new continuity every time you release a title. It is a continued story, and one that at this point is closing on TWENTY YEARS old. If you go after new players, you're going to add things that ostracize the old. Many already felt it in Inquisition, and Veilguard just turned that Inquisition "Detachment" from the original title of the IP to 11. If you cater exclusively to old players, then you miss out on potential revenue from new players, but at least you are delivering a consistent product, which is looked upon more favorably when you do announce a new IP from the studio. EA has just mishandled a lot of things in recent years. No one asked for a Mass Effect 4, especially not after how linear and devoid of RPG elements the series became as time went on. To that same extent, no one asked for a Dragon Age game that didn't feel like Dragon Age. Especially not when we got Dragon Age: Dungeons and Dragons released by Larian.

@CODYoungGunna Game sold approximately 1.5 million copies, which is below 50% of EA's sales expectations, meaning they've earned over 60 million $ if you account for the 30% earning cut earned by sellers of the game. And when you consider that this game went through a decade of development and multiple hard resets, it's safe to assume EA spent at the very least 100 million $ on this game, meaning that Veilguard quite possibly lost them a lot of money. If that's not a fail, at least financially, i don't know what is.

@konradzukowski213 you do know based on the copies sold that they have at least made 90 mil off of this game lol. @@CODYoungGunna 90 million $ is only possible if we assume that EA gets all 100% of the game's 60$ price tag, which is not true. In most cases they only receive 70%. Platform holders such as Xbox, Play Station and Steam that sell games on their store fronts take on average 30% of the sale, even Epic Store takes 12%. The only case where they get 100% without any cuts is on EA's own Origin storefront but that's a very small portion of all the sales. So even tho the amount money EA's earned is probably bigger than my 64 million $ "worst case scenario", I'm willing to bet my own arm that EA hasn't earned anywhere near 90 million $ and considering the average cost of AAA games and multiple problems, internal reboots and delays which add costs even more, I'm willing to bet that EA still hasn't gone even with the budget and still hasn't seen any profits coming from this game after 2 months on the market and sales only slow down from this point forward.

Its didn’t feel like a fantasy rpg to me like the last 3 games. I didn’t hate the game but tbh it’s the worst DA game I’ve played. It really hurts to say that as a fan of the series.
