I have one, "outside the box" suggestion for the VCV sequencer: Use a VCO (not an LFO) to clock the SEQ, and use the knob levels to "draw" a wave form. Use the Scope to see graphically what you are designing. You have to remember that if the wave form you design uses all 8 steps then the output frequency is the clock frequency divided by 8. If you repeat the pattern of levels every four knobs the output will be clock divided by 4. This is a mathematical division, not an exponential division so it takes a bit of tweaking the clock to tune it, but once you tune it to the rest of your patch you can quantize the VCO frequency and it stays in tune within about a 3 to 4 octave range. The stair-step wave can be smoothed a bit by putting the output through a nearly wide open low pass filter. This is mostly useful for designing really complex *bass waveforms* where the stair-step nature of the output creates tones rich in harmonics. If you try it I'm betting, if you use a proper ADSR you'll come up with a sound similar to the low end of a piano right off the bat.

Something I do quite often in my hardware eurorack setup is clocking my sequencer (I use the 0-Ctrl) at audio rate and effectively turning it into a subdivided oscillator whose waveform you can customize by adjusting the levels of each step. Using the gate output of a particular step to reset the sequence will result in different subdivisions of the frequency you’re clocking it with.

as always, ear candy, inventive and didactic! thank you Omri! extra trick: patch a few individual gate outputs into a unity mixer and you have an extra gate sequence... do it again with another unity mixer and you have a second one, and so on, there is unlimited number of seq channel you can generate with that

Omri, thanks for all these VCV videos. I'm in the process of scaling away from the niceties of physical synths and learning to patch wisely in VCV.

Thanks for sharing Omri! I did not realize one could send a Row to change the BPM/Clock dynamically (versus set Clock). Thought one would (only) use another constant Clock input .

The basic sequencer is really powerful. The first time I fell in love with this module was when I heard the bass sequence by Alexander Robotnick in "The Analog Session - N5 From Outer Space" for the first time. These are 2 older guys playing with oscillators and sequencers in their basement^^. At the end of their video, about 7:32, you can even see the knob positions of the sequencer. I think they did it, like in your example, with a reset on the sequencer. I tried to recreate the sequence from N5 in vcv-rack, but somehow I can't get it right ^^'. Thank you very much for the examples in your video, Omri. You show very good ideas on how to use it.

Another excellent exploration ! Thanks, Omri, I love Seq-3, it's great for all sorts of interesting application. Attach a stoermelder 8Face for sequencing the sequencer, the fun gets greater all the time. Neat trick with the clock control, that's a keeper. :)

Great tutorial Thanks.. I have learned how to manage the tempo(clock) of the seq-3 and how to use the reset.. Simple but i have never thought about this. I can use this with my hardware M.I Marbles and Grids too. :-)

Great ideas! The current version of SEQ 3 is a little different from the one in the video. For one thing, there is no input marked CLOCK. Patching the output of one of the rows to the input marked CLK didn't work. It worked when I patched it to the TEMPO input. Hopefully, this comment will help other newbies like me.

This is so close to being as good as the Doepfer A-155 but it's missing CV-addressable reverse and start point. It's missing some other A-155 features as well, but those are the two main ones for me.

Seq-3 jas been my go to sequencer since I started using VCV a couple of years ago, but I learned a lot from this. That said, I'd love to see a comparison of the different sequencers in VCV. Why you'd use one type over another, etc.

I've started using. gate/clock>sequencizer>sq lfo fm>gate or trigger for ze wonky accelerating/decelerating rhythms sequencizer can create with its curves after watching your vids.It breaks the limits of conventional timing. I dont think anyone has focused much on sequencizer yet.

Well, I don't think there is one that has all of the features, but depending on what you want to do, there are other sequencers that might be able to do it.
