When I was a kid my dad took me fishing with a guide in Grizzly country. The guide carried a lever action 45/70 with forged special loads that did not expand at all. I will never forget it. The guide let me shoot it. I was used to the recoil of a 270 win. I was not ready for that light 45/70. LOL I will never forget that trip with dad. I do not live in bear country, but the guide explained that a bear scull is harder to pen than a cast iron skillet. He wanted penetration over everything. The entire time me and my dad were fly fishing he was on slightly higher ground than us and super alert to every movement are sound. Bears are no joke.

@johnsadler9423 Gov 45-70 is a brute! If you have someone watching with that, that's great! Just remember, if you're walking, you may not have time to get off more than one shot. If you miss, God help you. A 10mm or 41mag semi or a DOUBLE ACTION 44mag, Casull 454, 480, etc, will allow multiple shots. Do not ever try a single action big bore on a beast!! If a bear or lion is on you, you cannot cock that revolver for multiple shots.

Over the years in the mountains and forests I’ve always carried a revolver ! The past 20 years I’ve seen more bears in the areas I go into , it made me rethink carrying jacketed hollow point bullets ! Plus a few books I’ve read for information on the subject ! 180 grain hard cast in my .357 mag ! In my .44 I moved up from the 255 grain hard cast Keith SWC ( not that bullet wouldn’t work ) to the WNFP 310 grain hard cast bullet ! Other change I made was I went to a chest holster rig as of 3 and a half years ago !

A couple of comments: Very good explanation of the balance between muzzle velocity and projectile weight. I agree that neither a slow heavy bullet, or a fast but super lite bullet are good combinations. I have a G20 and a G29. I settled on the Underwood 200g hard cast over the heavier 220g. I carry the 10mm almost exclusively in Grizzly country (Idaho and Wyoming), but when in Black Bear only country I often carry a G17 (9mm) loaded with Underwood +P 147g hard cast. I get torn between the two. I love the greater terminal performance of the 10mm, but I can get shots downrange faster and more accurately with the 9mm. Here in Oregon Black Bear can reach 300+ lbs, but to be honest that is the exception and not the rule. The vast majority will weigh between 150-250 lbs. I feel the 9mm +P hard cast is adequate. But whatever I am carrying I ALWAYS bring along an extra magazine or two. You just never know...

I agree with what you said I also live in MT in grizz country and I see a lot more mountain lions now and my go to gun is a glock 29 with the glock 20 mags and underwood 200 grain hardcast bullets when we are out working on fences or cutting firewood we also take a 12 gage with slugs close by but my glock never leaves my side great vid keep them coming and stay safe

Solid choice for a back country pistol. I regularly carry a model 20 myself in areas with potential for wildlife encounters. I would stick with the 200 hard cast. You're going to be shooting fast when in that bad of a situation, so any poor or missed shots will be immediately made up with more rounds being sent. But I can see your thought process. Love the idea of the lanyard. Most people won't be able to maintain control of their pistol if they get knocked down by an attacking animal. You have obviously put a lot of thought into this, which is more than most critics will do! Preparation will give you something the unprepared won't have...a chance! Good job, sir!

There is a good video of an Alaskan Inuit with a chest mount holster using a 44mag and 10mm with his wife timing for 4 seconds each. He had cardboard set up at about 20' with a bear drawn on. The 44mag he got 3-4 shots off in 3 seconds. The 10mm he got of 6-7 shots in about 3 seconds. He carries both at different times because he loves both....and he's a good shot and practices. It's here on the tube. I'll see if I can find it.

I haven’t seen anyone else talking about lanyards for bear/wildlife pistols, make a lot of sense to me! (That’s how I found your vid, searching for info on that specifically). Losing grip on the gun in frantic struggle could certainly happen; a chance to get it back could make the difference. Your ammo alternating in the mag also seems well thought out. Ride on!

Greetings from Bristol Bay Alaska. Every year we have to put down 1-5 browns where children play. Grizzlies are the smaller, inland variety of brown bears. We're on the coast, with a world class salmon run, so our browns are big and plentiful. I'm with you on your choice of gun. I would take a 5+ inch 9mm loaded with +P+ hard cast over any magnum revolver. The rule of gunfighting an attacking brown charging from 50 yards is, you have 3 seconds to stay out of the hospital, so nothing but the brain or spine counts. The ability to take 4-5-6 follow up shots inside of that 3 seconds wins. I EDC a Glock 40 gen 4 (15+1, 6", 10mm) in the summer. The extra 50% barrel length gives me a couple hundred more ft lbs, and a little less felt recoil. I dig the lanyard idea. There's zero chance of still holding a pistol of any size after getting hit squarely by a Ford Ranger doing 30mph, claws first. So the ideal choice when you "pull guard" on a bear is a backup snubby magnum revolver that's still in a chest holster. Your lanyard is a decent 2nd choice. I'm not on board with the hollow points. The extra pain and suffering of expanding bullets are just going to make it worse for you. What doesn't kill it literally makes it stronger. You don't want to give the rage monster a bigger spike of adrenaline. It won't slow it down. Nothing but the brain or spine will stop it BEFORE it hits you doing 30mph. If you roll the bear with a shoulder shot, that means it shattered the shoulder. Except a hollow point will never make it deep enough with enough energy to do that. 220gr hard cast might. Might. 12 gauge slugs are the only thing that can do it every time. So again, nothing but the brain or spine will guarantee you won't have to crawl for days with critical injuries before life flight can reach you. I carry 31 rounds of 220gr Buffalo Bore hard cast. The reload is for clearing a malfunction, not for needing a 17th round. Good for you on getting rid of the clip on holster attachment. Paddles and clip ons are trash in the field. But your holster choice is terrifying to me. The way the Serpa button lines up with the trigger, they are directly responsible for more negligent discharges than all other holsters combined. Most people who have shot themselves in the leg during the draw from the hip were caused by Serpas. Safariland ELS is just as secure, just as fast, and zero chance of inducing a negligent discharge. If you upgrade the barrel, a 6" G40 barrel will give you more performance with Buffalo Bore hard cast than any 4" G20 barrel, and runs fine in the compact G20 slide. Then swap it back to the 4" for city slicking with hollow points.

I agree with alot of what you said of course, and you're only the 25th person I've heard from about Serpas being a bad choice because of statistics. However, the statistics don't show that the holsters fail, it shows that the users of them fail. That's like saying I shouldn't drive a Ford Mustang because statistics show they cause the most accidents. Sure, maybe, but if I'm a good driver/operator, those statistics don't apply to me. And again, I strongly disagree with your hollow point theory. I'd rather have something that dissipates it's full energy on a non-critical body part than lose almost all of the energy into the dirt with a small pencil hole it made. I've lived in Northwest Montana, Libby to be specific. If you're picking huckleberries, it can be pretty brushy. I remember thinking, if i get rushed by a bear, i would be hard pressed to draw and even get a single shot off. Makes it hard to relax! I totted a shotgun when i was in those scenarios but never had any real close up encounters. Personally, i wouldn't hesitate to strap on that glock 20 and head out, having the best environmental awareness as possible.

​@@ChrisPBacon741, Glocks are only built for SAMMI specs. All the hot bear ammos are beyond that causing failures. They all need stronger 22-24 lb springs & rifled, full case support bbls or they blow out. Plan on spending at least another $400 for the upgrades. The gen 5s DO have the upgraded bbls ( which are match quality) but their springs still suck. Some of the weakest, poorly made springs on the mkt. The new triggers still suck too. So add another $300-$500 for a decent unit. Even the Taurus TH10 is better w the hot loads than Glocks are. And its instructions says to NOT use +p+ loads. I have 1 Glock. ( gen 5) The XDM-Es & the Taurus. NEVER had any problems with the XDM-E. Built right from the factory. The TH10 jams on the last round & has magazine dropout problems so it's a spare toy plinking gun. The gen 5 has a new spring coming, hopefully that will fix it's jamming problems, but the S.A. XDMs just WORK all the time no matter what theyre fed. And all I shoot ARE the hot, full power loads. LOTS of them. ( I reload) Practice w what your going to use. For what it's worth, my reloads are 200 grain copper coated Berry's FNs @1250 fps & they work great. Id have no problem using them for bear loads. I use an old style thick metal propane bottle for penetration testing & water jugs. The hard casts punch through 1 side of the steel tanks but completely shatter leaving NO dent on the backside. The Berry's DO leave a big dent but in the milk jugs only slightly flatten out a tiny bit. (5 jug penetration) The ONLY round I've found that goes through both sides of the propane tank is the Extream penetrators 185 gr. @ 1240 fps. They get 6 milk jugs penetration. The 140 grain E.P.s do make a hole in the back of the propane bottle but don't go completely through. That's in the 4.5 XDM-E.

Interesting video- a lanyard is not something I would necessarily use, but I understand your philosophy and you are used to managing it, so it makes sense for you in your environment, and how you use it. I am in the SW, and gave up on my Serpa after dust made the release draggy and gritty. I would imagine the same would happen to you with mud, dirt and snow. As others have mentioned, lots of bad ND history with Serpa... I went to a 5.11 Gear Thumbdrive that works really well, but is not made anymore. I now use a Safariland 6378 ALS with the addition of the Thumb Nub, and it is excellent.

Thanks for watching my video! I have heard all the horror stories with Serpa, and half of them are user error on the draw (avoidable with training). The other half is dirty and sticky holsters from failure to clean and maintain them. I figure if I'm great at keeping it dry and clean it would work fine, and over 5 years now it's worked flawlessly for me. My biggest threat here is snow buildup, but generally I'm not crawling on my chest in the snow lol. If I lived in AZ I would probably have something different, but you guys also don't have grizzlies there. So I'm not saying it's the perfect setup for everyone, but it's the perfect setup for me!

I have a G20. First thing i did was get a KKM 6” barrel. Adds a little length but not bad. Get a little more velocity and energy, fully supported for heavy loads and can shoot hard cast lead without loading up the rifling with lead in the factory Glock barrel

@ no problems, have heard Glock doesn’t recommend lead bullets with that type of rifling, that it builds up and causes pressure issues. And now Ive heard about some G20 Gen 4s blowing up using heavy loads like Buffalo Bore because of the factory barrel not being fully supported. Another thing i like about the 6” barrel is it adds a little weight out front. Best $160 Ive spent on accessories

That is a great idea alternating or as some call it snack stacking the magazine. I carry hollow and fmj when I carry for concealed protection. It makes sense for bear attack scenarios as well. I carried a .45 up in Alaska last year visiting my son in the military. I carried the hardcast buffalo bore. He has a 10mm mdx. Great video.

Bear Bryant, It's not the gun but the new full power bear loads making it so popular. Especially here in Bear central Alaska. Most 10mm factory ammo was pretty anemic. Hardy better than S&W 40. Like most other stuff it was personal hand loads that worked that got the major mfgrs waken up for THAT market & it's kinda exploded since. Beats the old revolvers simply by weight & size & ease of carry. Add, we have damned wolf packs to deal w too & revolvers just don't have the round counts needed when those bastards come after you. A lite, small, easy to carry semi auto w enough punch to do the job just flourished up here. When I 1st moved here over 42 years ago non of the bear loads existed that weren't hand loaded. The 45/70 were still the piss poor govt rounds before Bushmen found out the Marlins could actually handle the stronger stuff. I loaded 420 grain WFNHC up to 2100 fps & that dropped bears w one shot. Now B.B. is loading 430 grain WFNHCs at 2300 fps. That's getting close to 458 in a lever gun. Real handy in a multiple bear attack situation. Add, the bullet tech has jumped exponentially. What the younger generation takes for granted didn't exist yet back then. The standard 44 mag pissy loads were upgraded too. Back then the only revolvers that could handle the self loaded hot bear rounds were the Rugers because they & Sako rifles were the only company's that tested their units w double loads before selling them. So the gun mfgrs started making tougher revolvers too for that market. I'm 76 years old & have been shooting since I was 6. The gun/ ammo changes & upgrades have been wonderful all around. Course, by your response it sounds like you don't know what a REAL woman is either.

Why do you run your 4570 loads so fast? A hard cast lead 420 grain should shoot through a bear at 1200 feet a second why go all the way up to 2100 feet a second or more? Do you think at that velocity you’re going to get hydrostatic shock and do you think that really does a lot of killing on an animal the size of a grizzly? I’ll tell you what you do get is you get recoil and lots of it. Plus, did you ever question what kind of pressure levels you’re getting at that velocity? Also, you might want to take into consideration whether or not those hard cast lead bullets were designed with that type of velocity in mind. Velocity like that on a lead bullet can be devastating to the bullet itself. Bullets are designed within certain velocity parameters if you’re 76 years old and have been shooting for 70 years, you should know this.

I’m pretty much in agreement with you. I’ve had a 10 mm for years and I’ve hand loaded hard cast for it. Plus I have Buffalo Bore 220’s. I feel it’s along the line of a stiff loaded 357 magnum. It has a larger diameter, but not as good of a sectional density. The argument of the high capacity, although sounding good probably doesn’t buy you much real estate since more than likely you’re not going to get a bunch of shots off anyway. The idea of carrying two extra mags full, although hypothetically somewhat comforting, in the real world, probably has never been the difference between survival and death. The fact is autos jam even the best of them. And as much as I like single action, big bore revolvers a double action has it all over them just because you do not have to pull the hammer back. And what one of the comments said was that with the 10 mm you could fend off a pack of wolves. Well, this is probably true, but I have never heard of in my life where somebody had to shoot a whole pack of wolves. But I certainly would like to hear that story.

I know that I'm going against the semi auto and more rounds carried crowd. But I carry a Colt Anaconda 4" 44mag in a Denali chest holster. Ok I am a revolver guy but own quite a few semi auto pistols. A 44mag is all I can comfortably handle. I am also a believer in deep penetration for bear. Underwood 305 hardcast. You are most likely not going to get maybe 2 shots at the most on a charging bear and maybe only one.

I think it’s a good choice. Ammo is critical. I use and like the Lanyard. Ditch the grip plug. As an Instructor it is hard to strip out a double fed magazine from the sides of the bottom plate under stress. Glock designed the cutaway in the rear grip area to finger/thumb grab and strip the magazine out. (All European magazines are not drop free) If you put a plug in it, you loose the grip front and rear of magazine. A chest rig is easier accessible if you fall or get knocked down . The Blackhawk Serpa Holsters have a history as one of the most accidental discharges on simply drawing of any plastic molded holsters. Because you use your trigger finger to depress as you draw, it sometimes slips into the trigger opening and possibly onto the trigger causing the unintended accidental discharge. The last thing you need is to accidentally shoot your own leg as you draw to fire on a charging Bear. I like the Hard Cast bullet idea though. I would have stayed with a HP but understand the penetration is more important.

I live in Alaska. My current defensive pistols are a Glock 29 10mm, a Glock 27 .40 S&W (for when I really need light weight), and a Ruger SP101 .357 (snow machine moose pistol - may need it for -20° F temps and don’t completely trust polymer at those temps). I have medium small hands, thus the smaller pistols. Buffalo Bore or Underwood with hard cast bullets is my choice for ammo. Yours looks like a good set up to me, except I’ve moved away from Serpa holsters, either the Gunfighters Inc. Kenai chest holster or Blade-Tech hip holster. I like the springy lanyard, I’ll have to look for one of them. Alaska State Troopers will write you up for any defensive bear kill further than 10 yards.

I'll have to do some testing with polymer at -20°F, haven't thought about that much. However, at least in Montana, those temps keep the bears in dens, not out endangering me. I do have the Gunfighters Inc Kenai chest holster but it doesn't work with my bino harness, so I have to have a different setup. The lanyard is frickin awesome!! Don't listen to anyone who doesn't have any experience with them. I've yet to hear about Montanan officials giving anyone any trouble for defensive shot distance. Best of luck 👊

I run the glock 20 in a chest holster for back up. My 44 mags thru 500 mags in my chest holsters are not fast enough for me. I tend to osolate between 1 solid and 1 hp round on my edc .40 cal. but stay with solids on my glock 20 10 mm. 300 win mag threw 375 ultra mag for hunting. Are you aware of pointing your pistol at your leg. I have one friend with a prostetic leg , shot him self. I have another friends dad blew part of his arm off with 12 gauge pulling his shotgun out of the boat.

I have the whole encounter on KZbin, it's the video titled "The Most Bears/Cougars I've Seen Yet!". I actually walked right up to where the cats were laying after they got up and walked into the trees, and I tried to find if they climbed up some trees there or went down to the creek or what. After not finding any of the four cats, I walked past that spot and went after the bear. I blew it out as soon as I crested over the ridge, never saw it again. Walking back in the pitch black right where I saw the cats earlier was a little hairy but I had no more run ins!

Intelligent video. Looks like the algorithm has really liked it lately. Curious about barrel choice with the hard cast ammo. My mind has been swimming since Hickok45 did a couple of videos 11 years ago about hard cast loads in the Glock 10mms. He had bullet stabilization issues and his shots were slinging all over the place. In many cases many feet from one another at 20-30 yards. He recommends one of the after market barrels. Have you had this happen in your 20? I've had a G29 with hard cast ammo for years but haven't trusted carrying it in the wild because of that video. Just have never gotten around to getting a different barrel.

two things i know is true. Have your gun ready to shoot within two seconds and Know how to shoot your gun fast with precision and efficiency. The bullets to buy are still up for discussion and the type and size of gun used is hard for me to make a decision. I like the 10mm for shell capacity, 15 shots at your disposal is comforting. But i like the thought of a 44 mag and 45 colt for knock down power and penetration. 10mm, 44mag, 45 colt or 454 Casull?????????

Every situation is different. Every shooter is different. I know that when I'm in huckleberry picking, both of my hands are full, there's no "just pack a 12 guage" for me. Also, if I lived in coastal Alaska with 1500lb grizzlies, I might choose something a little more powerful, maybe two. But where I live, in northern Montana, the biggest predator is an 800lb grizzly. My problem is I keep running into GROUPS of mountain lions and wolves. A 5-shot .454 Casull just doesn't have enough ammo to take care of that threat, I don't need it to be that powerful, I'd rather have round capacity. 16 rounds of 10mm is the sweet spot to me, for what I do, for where I explore, for what I encounter.

Sounds like a great idea if you're just sitting around a campfire by your truck. But if you are backcountry deer/elk/bear/wolf/lion hunting, I can't imagine packing that extra weight. @SawtoothWild So I'm from Michigan and the laws here are different than Montana, but this is what I got from a DNR Officer here (Department of Natural Resources): Michigan Penal Code 750.227d: It is illegal to carry a loaded rifle/shotgun in a backpack while operating a motor vehicle unless the firearm is unloaded in the chamber and in the trunk and not accessible through the interior of the vehicle. In an off-road vehicle the firearm must be in an enclosed case or made inoperable with a trigger lock. ------------------------------------------------------------ When in public in Michigan, it is unlawful to carry a loaded rifle, shotgun, handgun, or revolver in a backpack. The exception is if the person has a state issued CPL or the person is from out of state with a CPL that Michigan honors, but this only allows the concealment of loaded handguns and revolvers in backpacks.

@SawtoothWild if you're saying holding both at the same time (one in each hand), then I'll admit that is silly and not great for use outside of the gun range to film a "tacticool" video. When it comes to hiking, at least in my opinion of my home state where I hike and camp a lot in the Northern part of the state, having the rifle is great while walking since I can have it ready to use. The shotgun, in this case a Mossberg Shockwave, is great for the campsite or if I need to traverse a steep hill, walking through very thick brush and thickets, or where a hand may be needed to assist in climbing since the gun is much shorter than the rifle, which I would sling on my back or attach to the pack while traversing. We do have wolves here, but they're generally considered to be smaller and much more timid like a coyote. However, we do have black bears, cougars (not the fun kind), wild boars, and even aggressive stray dogs. To me, the shorter shotgun is much more prevalent and easier to use since I can (again) use one hand to swing it around or fire the first shot with. Just my personal belief, you're free to disagree.

Yeah it could definitely get wrapped up if the cord wasn't always pretty tight. So far not once has it wrapped up from hunting/hiking/packing game. I unclip it to take it inside the tent with me. And 10mm is one of the most energy dense calibers you can own these days, that an average person can shoot effectively. A .44 magnum is more powerful (per round) of course, but considering you only have 6 rounds potentially, it's less total energy in your hand than 16 rounds of 10mm. That's my train of thought

@@SawtoothWild The 10mm is a good caliber in it's own right. - The closest comparison to a stout 10mm is a standard loaded 357 Mag. - There are lots of calibers that easily exceed the energy put out by the 10mm - Capacity gives off a false sense of security. - In reality, the odds of getting off more than 2 shots accurately at a charging bear is slim to none... With any type firearm. - In your 4 mountain lion example, 1 or 2 shots would have put the leader down and the rest would be running for the hills. - My carry choice is a short barrel 12ga pump with 2oz buck and ball loads (1 - 71 cal round ball on top of 8 - 31 cal 0 buckshot, lead cast hard with antimony and a pinch of copper to sweeten it for toughness) and a heavy loaded 45 Colt as back up. It is an interesting discussion...

Yeah I disagree with almost everything you wrote here, based on my personal experience running around the mountains over the years. Since you want to talk about odds, the odds of you sending all 5 or 6 shots into vitals at a charging animal are slim to none. Higher capacity allows for sloppier shots which are almost guaranteed to happen. Bears have been documented to be killed by .22LR and 9mm, it's not always about high energy. And in my mountain lion example, you actually have no idea what a wild animal would or wouldn't do. All four lions theoretically COULD decide to attack, perhaps at different intervals, when your magazine capacity is dwindling. You just can't say killing "the leader" (whatever that means) would make the rest take off. The cats I personally ran into last year all looked the same size, I didn't know which one was a kitten or which one was the queen or tom or anything. I very well could've been taking out one kitten at a time while their mother was still out for blood. Your personal choice carry is all but practical especially for a solo backcountry bear hunt. Everyone is tough til they have to pack all this weight 10 miles up and down a mountain with an animal on their back!

I'd select a chest holster without buttons to press to draw the pistol because you might fumble with it or something else could go wrong and not get it out in time. Other than that your choice of the G20 in 10 mm is a good choice. Or a 357 mag revolver with 180 grain JSP would work too. Ammo should be whatever penetrates the most, usually plain old FMJ or specialty ammo if you prefer.

Thank you for the sub!! Really appreciate it. The lanyard was on ebay, from a small seller/brand called "N2 The Wild Lanyards". I had one break on me a few years ago after tons of use, and the seller sent me two more for free. Awesome product! Personally I went with the 20 over the 29 because it's a big caliber and hard enough to hold with a long grip, can't imagine with a short grip and having one finger hanging off the edge. If weight was really a concern, you can always just carry half a mag full (10rds or whatever the 29 can hold), or even put a 29 slide on a 20 frame for some weight reduction. Longer barrel would have more energy, and energy is important for a defensive weapon

Hey nighbor im also here in the north west Montana, I also carry my Glock 20 probably 6 years now .. That lanyard awesome idea . The bungie spring part is brilliant now i gotta have one .. I also put a stream light TLR-8 LAZER light combo on it years ago absolutely Amazing match up .. Roaming around threw the woods hiking looking for fishing spots .. I carry in hand my Remington 12ga . 13 " barrel semi auto Tac 13 .. loaded with 5 slugs super low Recoil Absolutely fast shooter .. So on the mtn lions Man yeah buddy past few 4 years i been seeing them Saw 2 togethe 3 others alone . But wolves also I dont want to name any places on here But im sure you know . How far out are you shooting your 10mm ? We lay old steel tims on there side at At 112 yards and and Nail that rim oh man there all shot up . Have yoh taken any game with the 10mm.. I took a few deer 🦌. That Glock 20 is a serious weapon with my background i can tell people that dont much about them There a absolute destroyer.. 15 tounds In a mag . I have easly put 180gr . Sig hard cast rounds threw 8" Trees clean threw .. I tested that caliber on alot of stuff . Old cars easly threw both sides of doors . Ots one gun i feel very safe with the more i shoot it the more it impresses me . I use to count how many rounds i shot but i lost count few first years at 1,400 To 1,600 . In my Safari land holster every kinda of drill from drawing as you walk forwRd back Side ways any type of movement that comes to mind practice . Hey friend! Glad to hear to hear the Glock 20 is working out for you. If there is any change I'd make to my setup, it'd probably be to get a slide-mounted 1x red dot sight on it. Just makes target acquisition a little faster, but having electronics that you're depending your life on isn't always the most reassuring idea, so I haven't done it yet. Yes I've been seeing tons of wolves while I'm out deer and bear hunting, seems to be a constant now. Wasn't there a hunter case not too long ago where a Montana hunter was killed by a Grizzly after he shot it twice with a powerful rifle? A Grizzly enraged is damn scary. Being out of reach is probably the safest plan. All of my encounters with bears were with bears who were not interested, or took my noisy presence as a good reason to vacate the area. I have to say I am ok with hunting for food or survival or to take down a sick animal, or to control over population. I am not a fan of, and I am opposed to sport, or trophy hunting.

Right, and that's the thing too. If youre hunting legally (abiding by the seasons, with a legal tag, legal weapon, within legal daylight hours) then the biologists of that area have done the research and have okay'd the population in that area to be thinned out for various reasons. So, even if a person's goal was to "trophy hunt", as long as they're doing it legally, there really isn't an issue as far as environmental impact goes. In a way, all of us hunters who love this craft are "trophy hunters". There's just nothing quite as satisfying as a big juicy bear steak on your dinner table, that's a trophy to me, man!

@@jasonshults368 I agree, if you re read my comment it was aligned with hunting for food, and to keep an animal population under balance. Its well known that when animal populations get out of balance whether through lack of natural balancing forces such as limited food supply or predators then they can face disease, or starvation from over eating food supply. In that case because science evaluates their conditions a limited hunt can help that animal population. Because this hunt is licensed does not make it bad because the people who are hunting usually use that animal for food. In those cases where not all of the animals get used for food it still helps prevent a die off. BTW I am not talking about fishing, but only deer, moose, elk, or other game animals.

Your caliber and ammo choices are very good, and you are a well thought out and researched person. I feel we are all being misled by "energy on the box" now a days. Energy doesn't correspond to field effectiveness except in a general sense. What matters to terminal effect is permanent tissue damage. The bigger, deeper and cleaner cut the hole, along with the more bones and organs destroyed is what is most effective. Not a "sonic wave of temporary stretch shock," especially from a handgun. In the "energy calculation" some math wizard "doubled" the effect of velocity in its calculation as if it would be better to quickly shove an 100 grain ice pick through a body at 1,000 fps than a 3" diameter 5lb spear at 200 fps. Guns & Ammo contributor Col. Craig Bottington wrote about this when he often tested out the new "wonder magnums" delivering thousands of pounds of on-paper energy ballistics to bears while watching them run off after being hit. He knew the good 'ol 45-70 would have anchored the bear much more effectively with far less energy, but a big heavy flat-faced bullet that hit like a freight train, and destroyed everything in its deep penetrating path. The only way to know which is better between the 200 grain and the 230 would be to test for penetration, and permanent cavity, then see if one is noticeably easier to shoot. However, both 10mm's would be very effective.

I agree with what you're saying. Ideally we'd test and compare every single bullet through our chosen carry gun in ballistics gel, and measure precisely how damaged the primary cavity is and how far subsequent branched cavities go. That's basically unattainable for 99% of Americans to be able to accurately find that information for themselves. Ideally, yes, that's what I should do for my chosen carry loads. Maybe I'm wrong, and the 180gr load would hurt a bear more than my chosen 200gr load, I don't know, I don't have a great way to test that. All I have is muzzle energy and vague bullet design to decide on. It could potentially be a decision that costs me my life, but at the same time, how much of my life do I want to waste just trying to figure out what bullet I should carry? Still waiting for someone to market a portable flame thrower. It would have dual burners. One would be a pressurized propane gas flame which would point into and ignite the pressurized stream of flaming fluid. The pressurized propane flame could go on long after the flaming fluid has run out and be adjusted to 2-3ft in length for close combat with the bear if needed, but I doubt it would be as animals are programmed by their entire evolution to run from fire. Also, they don't understand fire and our apparent mastery of it adds to their fear of humans.

Most of the time, a .45 handgun holds very little capacity compared to 10mm handguns. Not only that, a 10mm flies much faster which really helps make up for it's lighter bullet weight. It's actually a very capable round. On average, much more powerful than an average 9mm cartridge.

I know that you can put in stronger springs, change barrels to Lone Wolf with standard rifling and all of the trick stuff but, right now my gun shoots everything and hasn’t had one misfire in 8 years of shooting 3 times a week. Unfortunately I live in Comifornia where I can’t find a large selection of ammo to choose from. The closest brand that have found in 10mm is underwood extreme penetrators. I will look at other ammo when I travel in Grizzly country. I know a lot of people will disagree with my choices for not customizing my gun for solid flat nose hard cast ammo but right now, I trust my gun completely and don’t want to change that at this time. JMHO. I also carry an SW 329 because we’re only allowed 10 shot mags here and I don’t think that I’ll have a chance to load another mag in my 20. Underwood extreme penetrators are a great choice due them being solid copper. Closest thing to use other than hard cast plus, you can still use your factory barrel with no issues.

Beware of running the hot bear loads in the G20s. The stock bbls are having case blowouts at the retractor blowing the mags apart & cracking slides. And lead bullets don't do well in the polygon bbls. That's why folks are putting the Lone Wolf & KKM full case support rifled bbls in their G 20s & going to the 22-24 lb springs. Tames the recoil & DOSENT crack the slides. Some folks in Alaska are going w 6 inch bbls for 2 reasons. Increases the power of the bear loads & if pushed into a bear ( which is common) the slide DOSENT get pushed out of battery. There's also a standoff devise for Glocks to prevent the slide from being pushed backwards. Bit pricey but worth it in an in your face bear attack. Personally, I run the XDM-E. IT never fails and is built tougher to handle the hot loads w no problems. I load my own & run Underwood's velocities ( hot) & shoot mine a LOT. AND, Grizzlies are showing up in Commiefornia/ New Mexico & Colorado where they've never been before. The damn wolves reintroduction in the Yellowstone is forcing the bears south. Bringing ARCTIC wolves into a non Arctic environment is just another STUPID bunnyhugger mistake.

When I lived and worked in Alaska I carried a Ruger 454 / 320 grain in the woods. Now I carry in a Kenai chest rig a SA/DA Sig 220 8 round 200 grain hard cast. It performs flawlessly. Just got back from an 8 day hunt on the Prince of Wales Island and wore the pistol at all times very comfortably.

Good choice the 200 GR. Hardcast. I always shoot solids. As in Always. Or FMJ. A tip for you. Go to lone wolf barrel Co. They make a 9x25 Dillion barrel that drops right into the Glock 20. All you have to do is switch barrels, nothing else spring mags, everything works fine. Now you're talking speed and damage and knockdown. Way more energy than a 10mm. Hell of a round. That's what I did to mine. Swap barrels. I think you'll be impressed. a $125 barrel can completely change your Glock 20. No FFL or none of that either. Peace.

@@SawtoothWild Couple things in my opinion. #1 you're shooting a 9mm bullet out of a 10mm case. Lots more powder. #2 it's traveling at 2000 fps. Rifle power out of a pistol. Knockdown and penetration is way more than 10mm. Kinetic energy is what kills=shock. Double tap has some factory 2000 fps rounds. But if you reload or know someone who does, now you're talking 2200-2400 fps. Which is over 1200 lbs knockdown. Which is also way better than 10mm. And all for a $125 barrel from Lone Wolf. 2000 fps is what every hand gunner dreams of. 2000 fps is your key. Anything 2000 fps is terminal. As in you go into shock and die. Get shot in the leg with a 223 or 243 you die, unless treated quickly. As in fast. Shock is what kills. your brain goes into emergency shutdown. Why do you think the Gov't of every country in the world uses solids, or FMJ. You shoot a bear in the head with a 9x25 Dillion it'll pop out his ass and still be getting up. Ask around, research it. The 9x25 Dillion is and always has been a well kept secret. Look up the odds of being killed or mauled by a bear. 1-50 trillion. Black bears kill way more people than griz or browns. Because they are in every state. The 9x25 Dillon will kill anything that walks the earth. 2000 fps is the key. Last time I checked a 55 gr was a 223 bullet. And a 243 shoots a 90-100 grain bullet. A 257 Weatherby shoots a 90-110 grain bullet. All 3 of these rounds kill with authority. Why???????????? Terminal Velocity. How Dat? Peace.

Lol I'm not sure I agree with you on alot of this. Would have to see all the data. FPS isn't "key", it's energy. Which could be manipulated by bullet weight AND velocity. "Knockdown power" isn't a testable repeatable scientific term. This 9x25 bullet you're the talking about, how much does it weigh? And yes the chances of a bear attack are low, if you count all the people worldwide who don't ever even step foot in bear country. But someone who literally lives and works in grizzly country every single day, and hunts/stalks bears for fun and tablefare, like me, the chances are pretty high.

At 14 I went from my marlin model 60 22l.r. to a single shot 223. At 18 me and John my mentor ran into the "Big Fellar""it almost killed us both. Talk about a hair flying fight to the death,2-1 and it almost killed us both. Took us weeks to heal. It changed both of us. I went from #3 guns to #31. Multiple Glocks and 45's and etc. Currently there are around #34 weapons in the safe. It goes up and down though. A 9x25 is the deadliest of deadly pistols for #2 reasons. #1 round count #16. #2 speed and mass. No matter what you have read, or been taught, real life speed kills as long as it has mass. Mass being a bullet. The U.S. Military shoots a 55 grain bullet. It kills like no other. the 556 or 223. Small bullet very fast. The dillion follows that theory. Except bigger bullet 90 to 127. At 2000 fps to 2400 fps it's the fastest pistol bullet there is. Rifle speeds out of a 5 inch barrel. ""Terminal Velocity"" is what it is called. It makes your target go into and ""Shock""is what kills. Science comes into play. Upon contact the shockwave tells your brain to shut-down. And that's exactly what happens. That's why the army chose the 556. I been killing critters since childhood. My weapon of choice is the 257 Weatherby. It has killed everything from Elephants to Rhino to Brown bears. It was Roy Weatherby's favorite rifle. It only shoots a 100 grain bullet. Explain that. Tell me about how a 90-110 bullet can kill the largest land animal on earth in #1 shot??? The bullet only weighs 100 grains. Not nearly as big as my 450 grain Beowulf???? How can a teeny-tiny little bullet do that???? Speed. Just like killing deer with a 22 l.r. . Been there got the t-shirt. My Beowulf kills but not like the 257 Weatherby. Shot a 400 lb black bear at 75 yards it shivered like it was cold and never took a step. Shot an elk and it just fell over. Books and experts will tell you all sorts of garbage. The meanest badest rifle in the world is a Weatherby 30-378. It held the 1000-yard record for over 40 years. Unbeaten in 40 years. It also will kill anything on earth in #1 shot. I'll keep my 257. Easier on the old shoulder. Peace.

It's your word against their's. I shot a buck at 225yards a few years ago with a hot hand load and it didn't pattern right, blew off both his front legs. But the time I got to him, he was still alive and fighting. Took 5 more shots of 10mm to put him down. That bullet was going 2400 fps at that distance according to Hornady 4DOF ballistic chart, and weighed 140gns. Speed isn't everything. Even energy isn't everything. I don't believe you that you can shoot something in the leg and as long as it's going 2000+fps, the brain shuts down. That's contrary to every experienced hunter I've ever known, and contrary to my own experience as stated in the example above. Cheers

You may want an aftermarket barrel as the glock barrel does NOT have a fully supported chamber ----- 99% of factory ammo should be fine with brand new brass ----- from what I understand the 230 grain rounds do NOT stabilize in a glock barrel.

Hold on, I'm just trying to figure out what you're saying. I'm a backcountry solo hunter generally, I simply can't carry a dedicated rifle for bear defense on top of my long range hunting rifle (that's sometimes strapped to my pack so I can use trekking poles). A handgun on my hip or pack is the only option I have at that point to defend against a bear.

​@@SawtoothWild, Up here in Alaska we disable ANY locking mechanism. Just the holster tension is plenty & in a PROPER chest rig guns pointed down & the case tension is enough. Gotta be able to pull the gun one handed w NO delays in the nano seconds one has in a bear attack. Prob have the non dominant hand fending off the bear. If your holster has a lock on it, disable it & tighten up the 2 sides. Even running or tripping the gun will stay in just fine. OR, get one w NO locks & adjustable case tension only. I ordered a " Keani chest holster" & it was a POS. had rivets I had to drill out & replace w small nuts bolts after putting a washer between the halves to open it up some. The back buckle was in the way of the guns grip so I had to cut that loose & add a 6 inch extension peice from a seat belt to eliminate that blockage. The morons selling that $160 POS got mad when I told them their mistakes & blocked my E mail. Started checking around & found the exact same unit for half & a lot of others that had adjustable connections & buckles out of the way like they should be.

Good info. A few points Hardcast breaks whatever it hits if it has enough energy. On a large bear, a hollowpoint is less likely to break a shin or rib or whatever. That said, I can appreciate the 2 hardcast, then the stagger. The lanyard hole in the frame isn't very strong. I'd seriously consider wrapping that around the grip and through the trigger guard, but that's me. Check that DoubleTap for actual velocity. Since the Plandemic of 2020, I've found wild inconsistency in some of their loads. Like 200fps between 10mm loads in the same box. Don't turn into a Cougar 💩 unless it's by choice
