I really liked Dennis Farina as Joe. My Grandpa name is Joe too, and he was a Detective for Chicago PD for 30+ years under the vice/prostitution and gambling squad. I asked my Grandpa about Dennis, as he was also a real police officer for CPD as well back in the late 60s and 70s. He told me he went to the academy with him in the mid 60s together. So watching him be a detective here gives me a little glimpse of how my Grandpa may of run things too.

It depends on a LOT of factors in place - did the vehicle catch onto a railing or some other material that prevented it from launching off the tracks? Did the conductor attempt to slam on the brakes right at the moment of impact? Etc etc. I ride the commuter into Chicago all the time (very similar setup as shown in this scene), and with people standing up like those guys, walking around prepping for their stop, etc, it would be easy for the death toll to be that high. Velocity would have train cars colliding into each other like a Newton’s Cradle - and this scene showed the derailed cars were still standing upright for the most part, which is a LOT less damage than a full flip. I realize I’m over-analyzing a fictional scene 😅 but this is a very real danger and stuff out of my own nightmares lol
